We burned coal for heat when I was young for about 20 years. Lot of shoveling into the coal furnace over the years. That was back in the 1960's . now we use solar on the roof and heat pump for heating and domestic hot water. My how times have changed.

Forbes - great source for expected emissions - UN and other Science organizations don't see a reduction until the 2040's. And China is not the only nation with heavy industry - don't we deserve cheap power. China is not going to retire coal plants they build this year, last year, or next year for 30 years which is the average amortized life span of a capital project of this size.

@@RagnarinVa The only reason China is building new more efficient coal plants is so they can more quickly put the dirtiest ones into early retirement. It is a good strategy to build one cleaner coal plant to be able to immediately close down several dirty ones today sending then into early retirement. As far as amortization, that becomes secondary as the cost of decommissioning coal and nuclear increases every year. Here we are closing fossil and nuclear plants decades early since they won't earn enough to cover the increased cost of decommissioning in 10 to 20 years so its time to stop the bleeding and you will likely also see China closing these new coal plants early at the first opportunity to roll out renewables in those areas. Best!

The real advantage to siting solar and wind power on the site of, or close to, old coal power plants is really that the grid connections are already there to transmit the energy. The same holds true for putting floating solar panels on reservoirs that feed hydro-electric plants - they're more expensive to install but also don't waste land.

Viking says he doesn’t know why 4 GW of coal fire power is included. When there is no sun shine and wind you need to switch on a backup coal-fired generator. You have two choices at what place you install the generator. Either at the solar and wind site or at a different location. If you install it at a different location, you have to connect the coal-fired generator to the grid by some connection lines. If you put the coal-fired generator at the solar and wind site, you do not have the build a separate connection line for the generator because the generator can use the connection line of the solar and wind station to move the electricity it generates to the grid.

"you need to switch on a backup coal-fired generator. " Coal is a terrible short term backup source. It takes coal plants 16-24 hours to reach peak efficiencies as the boilers make it to optimal temperatures. Natural gas is enormously more efficient. My guess is the "backup coal" will stay in continuous usage.

The Nevada Crescent Dunes Solar energy project failed due to poor management . It started in 2016 and closed in 2019. The federal government stepped in and pumped more tax dollars at it to repair and start up. It now only provides power at night with stored energy source.

But if advances in solar thermal can keep up with the plummeting cost of solar PV and storage then go for it. But don't leave out synergistic benefits of agrivoltaics.

New world's largest solar farm headlines will be with us until the companies behind these projects realize that PV is ideal for distributed generation and once it is distributed widely, it provides the most resilience against inclement weather with little or No batteries. We were taught to not put all our eggs in one basket so let's not put all our solar panels in the same solar farm. With widely distributed generation and batteries, they will really rock it.

There are already way too many solar panel units that are independent of each other. It's a peer2peer network...not a centralized one as with coal, oil, gas and nuclear.

sad to say, you are correct - and the reason is because of SABOTAGE. our dumbed-down education system is the "modern" equivalent of ante-bellum slave states PASSING LAWS making TEACHING LITERACY to slaves ILLEGAL. As George Carlin ("it's a big club.. .and YOU _ain't_ in it") said, "THEY DON'T WANT a highly educated work force.. they want you just smart enough to go to your job and get the work done." @@mikewallace8087 There are 216 operating coal power plants in the US (17% of US generating capacity) according to Wikipedia. Some are slated to continue operating until the 2040s. And some still burn lignite (brown coal) which is the lowest grade coal you can get.

Sam, the system in the opening portion of the video shows a CSP system (Concentrated Solar Power) These are mirrors and not solar panels directing the sun's rays to a central point that heats water to make steam to drive a turbine that drives a generator to make electricity. The system is fired up in the morning with natural gas.

Don’t worry Ashley. The little video production team working with Sam (researcher, script writer, editor) just pay for stock images available to the public for a fee. They wouldn’t know a solar panel from a bicycle pump. They just stitch all the downloaded footage together and make a slick looking (but inaccurate) video. I just watch this channel for entertainment, you can’t take it too seriously.

@@ashleysilva7414 The problem is that Sam is often way off the mark with his figures and an increasing number of people commenting on this channel are questioning him about it. But he never answers, never addresses the anomalies in his data, he just keeps pumping out videos every 4 hours or so. I just watch for entertainment to see what Sam is up to and then go to other sources for accurate numbers, Government statistics, Dept of Commerce, etc.

coal + battery storage may make more environment sense than you may think. If coal power can be kept at a consistent output level it can be optimized to produce maximum power output per ton of coal input, optimizing the thermal characteristics will also allow it to burn in the cleanest (still dirty but less dirty) possible way. The batteries allow this consistent level by charging on excess production and supplying top up energy during peaks. The maximum pollution times for coal production is during run up to peak demand (poor burning and wasted production as not yet required) and after peak, excess power produced as plant reduces capacity so again wasted production. Until we have enough storage capacity coal & gas will still be required, so we should optimize their performance, reducing the pollution they create.

South Australia can produce one hundred percent of its electricity needs when the sun is shining and the wind is blowing. But the rest of the time they use the interconnector to other states who depend on coal. South Australia also uses huge diesel generators for grid power. They therefore cannot be said to be 100 percent renewable.

My Solar Roof is providing 11 people living here, include the cooking of the restaurant. One point, you mentioned short, is the 'too much', I prefer have too much solar, like 2k inverter, but still 1 or 2 cells more = nice stable steady 2k even if early or late or as bit cloud. And maybe even more, so I can cover longer time with full own production, even if I loose some % during peak time. I still can open an aircon additional if very much, there is no too much at all, at the actual prices. (to buy against hardware to install)

I wonder how they approach managing a solar form of that size? Monitoring panel health, where a maintainer might find a particular panel, whether it needs to be cleaned, has a sheep nibbled a data or power cable. It must be like server farm disk drives.

Don't forget China are also currently building 23 nuclear reactors which primarily will support manufacturing. Solar and wind will only support domestic consumption. If Australia is ever going to be interested in manufacturing especially 24/7 operations in this country they will have to introduce Nuclear. Country's like Australia will hit green energy targets with solar and wind and moving all manufacturing to China. So I ask what is the true cost of not going nuclear for Australia.

Sam, could you p-l-e-a-s-e ensure your videos bear some resemblance to what you are speaking about. The Solar farms shown are a higgly-piggly mishmash of - agrivoltaic farms, - mirror reflectors heating salt in a tower to run a turbine, and - huge arrays of just plain solar panels. Which is the solar farm you are speaking about? If it's more than one sort, then map and call it out rather than throwing ambiguity into the bowl and stirring it all together.

I agree. I recently subscribed. There is so much random video on the site that has little connection to the topic of the video. I would say there are too many videos, at least once a day. Better to have fewer, with the video reflecting the content. Otherwise they are really podcasts with some random unrelated video. Actually the "podcast" content is pretty good in its own right.

No, it is not illegal to put solar panels on your balcony or yard in Aust. Ok if is off grid and is extra low voltage. Can parallel up say new or second hand solar panels if wired correctly ie fused and cable sized correctly. Feed to a DC-DC converter, the output say a LiFePO4 12V battery/s (either 12 or 24 Volt system, depending). From this battery, connect a good quality pure sinewave inverter eg a 3kW one to charge your EV or run an AC at night or whatever. I just saved you some $$ (as long as you do it right and don't burn your house/car down) You are welcome 👍⚡️

Only a fraction of earth's surface is required to power the world with solar energy. Agrivolaics combines agriculture and solar farms for a synergistic positive effect so land cannot even be said to be wasted. Also, a solar panel is many orders of magnitude more efficient than photosynthesis itself for capturing the energy of the sun.

Thorium reactors are a great idea but we've been waiting for decades. Private investors aren't going to build any nuclear reactors because they won't get their money back and tax payers shouldn't be paying for it also. Unfortunately we have a lot of morons in Australia that want to believe that nuclear = cheap power and the Liberal party is happy to promote the idea to get back into government.

While these massive solar farms have their place in the mix, I can't help thinking that there are lots of large urban areas that should be used first. 50% of the paved land in the US is parking lots (which is a pretty damning comment itself on poor US planning regulations). A study looked at Walmart in the States and found that if they installed solar panels over the car parks of their Supercenters on average each Supercenter could generate 3.1MW of energy - sufficient to power 100 charging points for EV cars. Walmart has 3,700+ Supercenters in the US giving a potential for 11.1GW of energy powering 346,000 charging points - and thanks to Walmart's Supercenter locations 90% of the US population live within 15 miles of one.

One of the biggest issues with solar and wind is that they are intermittent, while demand is continual. That means that backup generation (typically fossil) needs to be kept on inefficient standby. This results in overall increased costs. Batteries are too expensive to solve the cost problem. Poor people suffer as a result. “. . . a naïve observer might conclude that the rising share of new renewables (solar and wind) will usher in an era of falling electricity prices. But in reality, the opposite has been true.” Vaclav Smil, Numbers Don’t Lie, p.172

There are other forms of grid-scale storage. Look at this channel and others for topics like liquid-metal, compressed CO2, sand, gravity, and good old pumped-hydro. Lithium batteries in all likelihood will *not* be the dominant technology in this critical space. As renewables are the only way forward, grid-scale storage will be vital to national security as well as species security. When this happens, you'd be surprised how innovative humans become. Vaclav Smil needs to understand that generation is only one-third of the total grid energy cost. The others are transmission & distribution (T&D). Renewables are the only technology that are growing so incredibly fast that its pushing on the frontiers of the grid unlike any other technology has. Hence it may appear that renewables pushing up electrical costs at first. We also need to look at world-wide inflation triggered rapidly by good old pursuit of oil which plays a big part in why Putin wants Ukraine.

@@beyondfossil I am not up to speed with all the alternative storage you mentioned. I did watch a U Tube video on gravity. It was very detailed and used all the associated physics and mathematics and it showed conclusively that gravity, except hydro, was a pipe dream. It is just not feasible. For decades in Australia the green party who hold the balance of power have forbidden dam construction due to the amount of environmental damage they do. But of late they have thrown the environment under the bus and will allow some dams. They also used to forbid any clearing of forests. But now they can't knock it down quick enough to put up bird blenders.

Protracted delays are not the sole domain of nuclear energy. Australia's Marinus link renewables project was initially proposed in 2016. It has been 'in planning' ever since and has recently been downgraded by half. Construction 'might start' in 2026. Not holding my breath.

a vexing problem; it is competition for useful land; unless it is in a desert. If in a desert; there will be sand storms. How long to clear off solar panels that cover an area the size of NYC? What prevents another storm? Not only does stand cover the panels; it scratches the surfaces making it less functional. Hurricains and storms can wipe out floating solar farms on barges; which has already happened; as have hair stormes in Texas. Oz probably has minor terrorist threat; but the USA has significant threat; if all one has to do is fly over with a small plane and drop loads of screws - oh maybe that is where the term comes from..your screwed.

You just rotate the panels upside down and most of the sand falls off. Little air pressure pipe to blow the rest off. Then a squirt of water. Can have grass for grazing animals underneath.

What we are trading is solid hard to destroy things like Dams, nuclear plants, and natural gas power stations and replacing them with giant rather fragile panels that are very difficult to secure and keep productive. What do you say?

So now we need a temprature contolled water system covering an area the size of NYC?

in fact, in desert areas, solar panels help grass growing since there's a sprinkler system to clean the panel for efficiency. the cleaning water drips down... there's so much vegetation growth that initially the power company had to hire grass cutters. before long they figured out that raising a herd of sheep and goats is a way to control the situation and becomes another revenue stream... btw, sheep and goats actually love the shades those panels create. truly a win-win situation.

But for sure one thing I have witnessed myself is sand storms; I was on the way from Vegas to Palm Springs and there is a big solar farm right there about half way. I have a photo of it actually - a massive sand storm covering everything; and it also damages the glass surfaces of the panels. So if you had this size solar farm the size of NYC - how long just to clear it of sand once? And what if you have lots of storms.. I also mentioned the potential for terrorism. Seek better options.

So, we have just lost an area as big as NYC to preserve biodiversity, prevent diffusion of diseases, produce food and so and so on. What a waste of land. Barakah nuclear power plant, just to name one, provides the same energy (theoretical peak power means nothing if a plant is forced to shutdown due to highly unforeseen events like... night... clouds... winter...) in the size of a shopping mall (one of many NYC shopping malls). And it does it in a country (UAE) with a lot of "unuseful" desertic land and a lot of Sun. Maybe the right choice has been made there because the deserts too are not so "unuseful" for the people that inhabit them??? Oh, the beauty of the laws of physics... Sam, as usual cease, desist and regret to misinform people. Otherwise, I promise here that I will be your worst nightmare until the thruth will be finally established (because humanity deserves a world of abundance of both energy and biodiversity, not a world of both scare and scarcity).
