Very cool pedal! I got one and the eq is great. I don't use the compression that much, but when I do it gives nice clear and even punch. I also use it for recording with both effect and dry out for a nice blend!

Just picked up this pedal yesterday, Using as a clean preamp boost to get it a very active but vintage sound with my jazz bass😊.... Add my joyo double thruster for extra bass foucsed distortion and It sounds HUGE and I love it. 🤘🏻♥️

I've just tested the OD in the Battalion Nano against the HOT WAX. Hands on. The OD is just the SAME as the CRAYON. If you flat up the EQ in the NANO and in the HOT WAX, the sound is absolutely the same. I assume the BATTALION NANO is simply the CRAYON with very good tonal options for bass. The hot wax, though, produces more hiss and hum, as any OD would, but it gives you the Hot Tubes as a bonus (not so great, but interesting). It sounds, to my ears, that this big box has the same CRAYON circuitry for the drive... And it is REALLY GOOD. Overdrive as it is supposed to sound. Absolutely lovely. Get the big Battalion if want a really good dual channel preamp that doesn't bankrupts you. Get the NANO if you want a really good OD, really silent in terms of noise, with amazing tonal possibilities and small footprint.

This is an old thread but I'll add my two cents. One problem with all these KZfaq "Reviews" is that they aren't reviews, just demos. Nobody actually says anything critical of anything because they're afraid the manufacturers won't send them gear for free if they give a bad review. That being said, there is a reason he quickly glanced over the noise gate: it kinda sucks. It opens just fine, but closes too slowly, especially for quick start stop parts. If you let a note ring out you will hear a slight him glitch before the gate finally cuts it off. Basically the gate is useless. The rest of the pedal is pretty great really. Alot of people don't like the compressor, but I find at lower settings it works very well, under 12 o'clock. The eq and distortion are great. I have been using this instead of my SansAmp and I get a tone very reminiscent of the bass tone on Bulls on Parade, but with a bit more clean mixed in to give more note definition.

Would you recommend it over a SansAmp? I am a newbie and looking for a good utility pedal to do anything ranging from a little bite on a clean tone to metal tones.

@@rcjd7834 either is a good choice especially if you're just starting out. I actually have the Battalion and the Tech21 Para Driver(Basically a bass driver with sweepable mids) and I have used separately and together with good results.

Great demo! I’ve been considering this because the Bass Fly Rig is too pricey. I mainly just use compression and EQ. Is this noisy? I have a cheap fly rig ripoff that has a loud hiss that drives me nuts.

Yeah I'm sold. I've been looking for a new pre amp and I'm just not getting on with my Sans Amp, I even reckon it (I'll give you a sec to put down your cup and swallow your tea)... sounds better than the Darkglass Microtubes.

I have this box. Also have the Fulltone Bass Drive and MXR Blowtorch. fulltone is supposed to be "the shit" but each has its charms. The features on the Battalion are tops. Only shortcoming of this otherwise excellent pedal is the compressor. Not up to the spec of the rest of the box - Too futzy and limited. Seen many way better one knob wonder comps. Seems to be too much or too little no matter how you twiddle. But overall a solid buy for a Swiss army pedal. (crunch / pre/ comp and DI )

Excellent demo! I have heard from a number of people that the gate both clicks and cuts when set to higher than about 11. Did you find issues with it or does it function more like the gate on the Deluxe Muffs (which are amazing)?

This and the Deluxe Big Muff would be overkill, as the only difference between the Deluxe and normal Bass Big Muff is the addition of the EQ, Blend and Gate options. I would probably just pair the Deluxe Battalion with the normal non-Deluxe Bass Big Muff because the Deluxe Battalion gives you more EQ options, has the Gate function, and a Compressor to boot.

Where does the preamp go in the effects chain? Or should be replacing the combo preamp via fx loop??

Yes you can plug it in to fx return on your amp to go straight to power amp section, this will bypass the tone on your amp. If you have other pedals this will go after any fuzz/od pedals you have and before any delay/reverb pedals, generally.

No. For me preamps are for setting eq that's going into your other pedals. Amp eq goes at end

I don't understand the d.i part does this mean I can just plug my bass in then straight into a mixer to gigs without an amp? I understand that I would need some form of amp to be able to have a monitor but would it be giggable without?

Yes - that's what the DI out is for - staight to the main desk. As long as the engineer can give you a decent fold back level you won't necessarily need a separate amp but if you do, you can just use the jack output to feed said amp. Hope this helps.

Hello. Thanks for the video. Could you tell me if the XLR output allows for the wet/eq sounds to come through or if it is only a direct out for a PA or recording? I have read different things about it. Thanks.

XLR offers two options. Either always the clean direct signal without compressor, eq and distortion or XLR delivers the effected sound depending the bypass foot switch. Second is the same as on the 1/4 Jack output. .

How is that then connected to a recording interface so you have 2 takes 1 wet 1 dry so they can be blended together in the DAW at the mixing stage is that possible

Kyle Parrish the battalion has three outputs, one's clean (dry), one's effected and the xlr can be either clean or effected. Just ran two amps with it tonight. Sounded great.

I own MXR M80 for years and recently got Battallion. I was looking for an alternative to M80 due to its heavily mid-scooped sound when drive channel is engaged (color button can't be toggled when drive is engaged). Battallion seems much more versatile to me, especially due to its pre/post/dry positioning of drive channel, and it colors original bass guitar sound less. With MXR you re more or less condemned to mid-scooped and lo- and hi- boosted sound, which is very difficult if not impossible to purify aftewards in pedal/EQ chain. If you like that kind of sound, then M80 is a better option for you tough.

For addition: in the end I've decided to keep them both in my pedalboard: Battallion goes first (clearer sound and i prefer its drive channel), and then goes M80 (clean channel mostly with color button on, but with reduced bass and treble and exaggerated mid, just to add a bit of its specific punchiness, which really is tasty in lower amounts, at least in my opnion)

To my opinion the Compressor does not bring noise. Not too much. Not significant compare with EBS Multicomp. Battalion comp drops the Hi Mids and I have to add some via EQ. I just tested the Valeton Bass Dapper. That made a lot of noise with its compressor.

Generally it's just a pad to knock down too-hot signals that can overdrive or clip other gear down the line. This one (if I remember right) is an input pad, meaning you can quiet down a too-hot instrument that is clipping the pedal input.

Can someone knowledgeable with compressors tell me how the compression is with this pedal? Is it any good?

What kind of application are you looking for out of the compression? Generally anything above 12 o'clock on the dial makes it noticeably noisy. I also found it to be too dulling even on the lowest setting (to my ears), because they engineered it to be a fast attack compression which accommodates slap technique. If there was a way to change the attack it would be 100% more useful for fingerstyle or pick playing. Also to have a makeup gain knob to compensate for amount of compression. The compression and the noise gate are kind of like a "jack-of-all-trades master of none" situation on this pedal. They do their job but don't really excel at it. The preamp EQ section and DI are really what you're buying and what it excels at. However, if you just needed a quick all-in-one to grab or didn't want to take a whole pedalboard to a gig, it will work excellently for those types of situations.
