There are several important exceptions to the general pattern for electron configurations of the elements. In this video we will look four different exceptional configurations: Cr, Mo, Cu, and Ag. Of these, the electron configurations for Chromium (Cr) & Copper (Cu) are the most common exceptions taught in general chemistry.
For these exceptions there are two rules to remember:
• Full-filled d subshells are more stable than partially filled.
• Half-filled d subshells are more stable than less than half filled.

Note that when writing the electron configuration for an atom like Cu, the 3d is usually written before the 4s. Both of the configurations have the correct numbers of electrons in each orbital, it is just a matter of how the electronic configuration notation is written (see below for link to an explanation why).
The configuration notation provides an easy way for scientists to write and communicate how electrons are arranged around the nucleus of an atom. This makes it easier to understand and predict how atoms will interact to form chemical bonds. Knowing the exceptions is also important.

You've cleared my long drawn misconception and now I will not have to mug up these exceptional configurations, amazing!!

Thank u good to know u took care to put 3d subshell before the 4s subshell because most people don't know this fact on this platform

so the inner subshells must be full in order for the atom to be stable? and this is done by the outermost subshell giving one of its electrons to fill out the missing electrons in the inner shells to make it full? is this it?

One more question Dr. Breslyn. Would it be possible for you to make the electron configuration for Tc and Tc2+? Thank you so much :)

Does this mean that other elements like W, Au are exceptions too? What about Pd and Pt? Are exceptions made whenever needed to achieve the half filled or fully filled shell?
@wbreslyn

Usually Cu and Cr are the ones taught in schools, but there are quiet a few. Here are a few other examples, in addition to Pd and Pt: preparatorychemistry.com/Bishop_Anomalies.htm Most often it is to achieve the half or full d orbital. But with the larger atomic numbers things get more complicated.

There are a few other exceptions like Pt and others. Cu and Cr are the big ones you'll see on tests. Is the removal of electrons from Cu and Cr, when they become ions, different to the removal of electrons from other elements?
@wbreslyn
@wbreslyn 3 жыл бұрын
No, it is the same process. When you remove two electrons from Cu you get Cu 2+.

Sir i just want to clear that why mercury is bad at sharing electron.... and moreover it is not a good conductor of heat also except the property of fair conductor of electricity it does not stand on the criteria of metal in their physical form then why do we consider mercury as a metal????
