There is a fail in the Exploration of the Expansion valve.(13:10) it dosn't operate like this. If the evaporator is cold enough, the sensing refrigerant in the sensing Part retracts and closes the valve, becourse the refrigerant in the evaporator cant compleatly evaporate and so it makes sure that no liquid can go from the Output of the evaporator to the compressor. But its Position is between condensor and the evaporator. Its Sensor is connected to the Output of the evaporator. Think about the placement of the capillary Tube, its the Same as the Expansion valve. Also it closes when its Sensor gets to cold and opens when it gets warmer. (Sorry for some misspelled words, im german)😉

Brilliant video, it explains the process very well. Please, my spicy chorizo, investigate cascading cryogenic systems. As the temperature for each level decreases, it uses a more appropriate refrigerant for the temperature and pressures that will be required.

Hey how are you can you please help me..i have a portable ac it does work and cools but the compressor keeps turnin off, do knw what can be causing this, it cools for one min and then stops can it be a sensor or is it somethin i can fix??

Some corrections for stuff in the video: Air compressors usually use reciprocating compressors which have pistons but these types of compressors which are a second type of rotary vane compressor have a different design. It is not a screw compressor and I have taken one apart before. You usually find screw compressors on large water chillers. The liquid dryer is before the metering device. R290 is propane aka a hydrocarbon. Hydrocarbon refrigerants do not have any ozone depletion potential aka ODP. HFCs like r410a(r32 and r125) have no ODP but they do have GWP aka global warming potential. Hcfc refrigerants like r22 are being phase out and have both ODP and GWP. Cfc refrigerants like r12 are VERY VERY BAD and are illegal. I agree scroll compressors are becoming more common but you will still see reciprocating compressors and rotary vane compressors. All motors that have VFD capability or multi speed capability can drive motors/compressors at variable speeds. Newer chillers usually have scroll compressors.

I did convert my portable A/C to a dual hose and that seemed to help a lot. I eventually upgraded to a mini-split system. The portables are just too loud and I hated that mine used my window. My 12,000 btu can get my room ice cold and not even be phased while it seemed like my 10,000 btu portable had to work overtime to get my room down to a comfortable temperature. Portables and window A/C units are fine if you're renting. But if you own your home, you can't go wrong with a mini-split. Best thing I've ever done. Might install one in the living room next.

Mini Split is going to be the best. Wall or Window Units second. If in the states you need to look at BTUs SACC (Seasonally Adjusted Cooling Capacity or DOE) for portables. Since most portables on the market are less efficient. As of 2017 most of your 10,000 BTU units are far less. Many people tend to miss this when sizing one. Which is why the gov. changed the BTU rating system for portables. They do work if sized correctly and dual hose units seem to be a bit better. I do have 10,500 BTU SACC unit. Zero Complaints for the space it cools. Renting. Although they start to get quite expensive in this range.

​@@Hieu.minh97 avoid condenser coil to suck air from inside room. Close it and attach one hose pipe. The keep other end of the hose pipe outside the room. In short.. Existing portable AC has only one hose thats hot air out hose. Make one more hose set up at the inlet side of the condenser coil

Thanks for taking the time to make this. Im a fan of the TXV, always thought about converting my fixed orifice so the compressor wouldn't constantly kick on and off. Anyway, great explanation of the components!

Loved to see that water evaporator thing. I wondered how they do that, my guess was just dripping water over the condenser. But then the device would be useless as a dehumidifier (used without exhaust hose).

r290 is one of the least harmful refrigerants ozone depletion of 0 and green house warming of 3. r410a has a green house warming of 2088 and r134a of 1410

I had viewed a lot of videos about the AC and the only thing that I couldn't understand was the expansion valve. Finally with your explanation and very nice diagram I understand now. There are two valves, one is the compressor and the other is the expansion valve. The expansion valve is an "open valve!" Thanks for the video!

Great video! I’m considering making a frankenchiller out of an air conditioner by immersing the condenser coil in a cooler of glycol solution. It seems that these portable units would actually be a great choice for this since the condenser coil is already stacked at the bottom of the unit and you don’t need to bend the delicate copper pipes as you would on a window AC unit. Appreciate all of the close up shots, it was really helpful!…

Love your videos! Couple correction. 1. Your fans are not turbine fans they are centrifugal fans. 2. It is not a screw compressor it is a rotary compressor. 3. The device on the compressor you referred to as a muffler is a suction accumulator (prevents liquids from being sucked into the compressor) 4. R290 is one of the most environmentally friendly refrigerants, but it is flammable. 5. The temperature sensors are likely thermistors and not thermocouples. Great video thanks!

Awesome quality ! Thanks a lot ! I have learnt the hard way why these single hose models aren't massively efficient. I was wondering why so much air flow was created when I turned the apparatus on. This negative pressure inside the room is really self-defeating...

You could try converting this A/C to a more efficient one by adding a 2nd tube which will take the air from outside.

What about some improvements like using an Arduino/ESP8266/RaspB. to remote control and/or monitor this AC with a web interface and/or smartphone/tablet ? Seems like a challenge to me. And while I'm suggesting... why not try to do temperature measurements with the famous DS18S20 ! I like that one very much !

ive heard that there are models with two ducts: one to get outside air to cool the condenser and another to return that hot air to the outside, thus not creating the vacuum nor reusing the recently cooled air. also, this reminds me of the Technology Connections video about the subject

Very nice and detailed teardown! I also have one of those ACs and its a powerful unit: I think it has a 1000W compressor and I measured the cooled air outlet at below 10C. So it cools really well. But the unit it too loud and its too powerful to be honest. The compressor runs at 100% power no matter what and it produces strong vibrations which I tried to dampen with rubber mats below the unit. That helped a lot. It it possible to control the speed of the compressor with a VFD? Should work just fine since its just a big induction motor.

i think that this video explains AC better than any others that I have watched. Thank you. Just one thing you may need to correct. The R290 doesn't damage the ozone but it is a greenhouse gas like methane and CO2.

Now a days the compressor used is an inverter compressor. It work by converting the AC current into DC and a motor driver (inverter) convert the DC current into variable frequency AC, so that it can be used to drive the motor of compressor in variable speed. So instead of starting and stopping of the compressor like here, the compressor can operant at variable speed as load demands. Hope this was helpful...

nice post but from the new inverter airconditioners we have, I haven't seen one that continuously works at low power. I hope manufacturers have a feature or setting to restrict ac to lowest power or most efficient operation.
