With fall fast approaching, we were able to acquire camping permits to Canyonlands National Park Needles District; specifically, within the Elephant Hill Trail. We equip our Lexus LX470 (100 series land cruiser) and my dad's Jeep Wrangler Rubicon JK for the 3 days 2 night adventure.
In this episode, we prepare for our journey and head out to our first basecamp: Inside the vast wilderness of the San Rafael Swell.

At about the 2:00 mark, you talk about the space difference between a GX460, 470 and 100 series. Were you saying there is less space in the 470 vs 460? Also, how big is your fridge?

Good ear. I messed up a few times in that sequence (the last ammo can is a .50 not a .30 also. I meant to say GX470. I only have a GX470 and the left shelf I move between vehicles. The rear hatch of the GX470 curves to the point that the ammo can clasp won't open unless half of it was cut off. I was looking at GX460s the other month, and due to the fold-flat seats, it is 4" SHORTER than the 470, so my fridge (on top of the shelf) would not open in a 460, but opens fine in a 470. If/when I upgrade to a 460, I'll need a slider for the fridge. I didn't check widths between the 460 and 470, it's not narrower, but may be slightly wider. They are close dimensionally. My fridge is a Dometic 35CFX, and my dad's is an ARB 50.

Thanks. I have a 470 but may get a 460 in the future. Too bad about the ceiling height though. Regarding your dad’s fridge issue, I have heard of people plugging in a low voltage led light to the battery to keep it from shutting off.

@@shinhochulp , that light idea is a good one! Patriot Batteries gave him a service order number, but he hasn't heard back from them.

Good to see you back! Looking forward to part 2. I'm a little disappointed that there was no ammo in the ammo boxes

I actually bought the 50s because they had 30s inside them. The 30s are in the safe doing the job they were born to do, the 50s I mounted on the rig.

Great video! Regarding the refrigerator/power station issue, your dad’s refrigerator requires a regulated 12 volt power supply. It’s likely that his power station does not have this. If it doesn’t say regulated 12 v output in the power station specs, then it doesn’t have this. This is likely why the refrigerator keeps shutting off.

I'll have him check. Either that, or a timer. It's a Patriot brand bought at Costco, so we didn't expect Goal Zero performance....but we did expect it to keep the water cold to the next gas station!

It's really easy to pack a JK when you have a hundy in tow to carry the tools! Although, this time I made him carry some cooking gear in a front runner box he had on the back seat.

Awesome video How did you go about getting the permits and how far out did you have to get them

I went through the canyon land's website. They have links to the permits and Reservation windows on when you can reserve them. It's the same method you use to reserve white rim camps.

@@pillowlava , I like the big ones that are in the back of the vehicle. The small ones on the rack don't seem to hold much gear. I'm tempted to try the Gen 2 boxes as they are supposed to hold 15% more, or just stick with the bigger gear. Each one pretty much holds our clothes for 2-3 days and that's about it, once you put an adult hoodie or jacket in there it eats up a ton of space!
