Elimination Communication after 1 year: Potty Training an infant
We started Elimination Communication (EC) during her 4 months sleep regression and quickly quit.
We tried this early potty training method again when she was 6 months. Now she's 16 months old and I wouldn't say that she's potty trained but she absolutely knows what to do when she's on the potty and doesn't mind sitting on it.
I would highly recommend this book if you want to give it a try: godiaperfree.com/elimination-...

We started EC at 2 weeks with my daughter who is 2 months now and she is doing great. We make it to the potty about 8/10 times, sometimes more, sometimes less. It is so satisfying to read her cues and also amazing to do waaay less laundry with cloth diapers. We also use a disposable diaper at night because I prioritize sleep over making it to the potty! I think EC looks different for everyone and I love approaching it with a laid back attitude. In my opinion, it’s all about what you said about how your baby knew what to do when she was on the potty. I was watching my 11 month old nephew and I could tell he needed to pee, so I tried to let him go on his big sisters seat and he got really scared. I see this as a big impediment to potty training because it’s so unfamiliar! It isn’t about perfection, just early exposure to make your life easier down the road!

We did casual EC from maybe two months. We always did wake up pees, the others were hit or miss. We just finished potty training. Gently potty trained at 20 months and it was INSANELY EASY! We would have started earlier, but we had a cross-state move and I didn’t want to stress her out or have her regress. I’ll add, we make sure to not mention smells of poo or make it seem gross in any way. I feel like that has helped her to not see poop as a bad thing and cause her to hold it. EC + CD = 🥳

My best day (my son is 5 months) was 7 catches! He wore the same, perfectly dry, disposable all day long 😍 When we are busy I don't worry about it. Sometimes we pottitunity out and about, most of the time we don't. Sometimes I forget, and my son didn't cue for pees, but he's started to! He grabs at his diaper every so often and I jump on the opportunity! We didn't catch the first 4 months worth of poops but this past month he has started grunting and getting real quiet and still to poop so I've caught 5 this month! 🤯 My husband is so adorable giving pottitunities with his son ❤

I started EC when my daughter was 7 months. I've always done it really casually, but it was great not to have potty training be a shock to her once I decided to get rid of diapers at 21 months. So many of my mom friends are having trouble because their toddlers are afraid of the toilet. Also, avoiding poopy diapers is just the best.

I can relate! My child was fine with the potty around 2 years and was doing well. She went on her first trip away from home, ever, to her grands and they traumatized her by putting her on the potty for 30 minutes on, 30 minutes off, all day long! Yes, 30 whole minutes for a 2yo!!! So we had a really hard time. I didn’t push her and just let her use diapers after that, but even at five years old, she REFUSED to go anywhere near the Elmo potty (that’s the potty the grands had when she was visiting). She was fully potty trained and I got rid of that potty and she couldn’t have been happier lol. I’m still annoyed by them trying to potty train my child in that forceful, and in my opinion, cruel way, but luckily we are over that hurdle. It’s just not logical to me. Who would sit a tiny toddler on a potty for 30 minutes? They had it in front of the tv, so at least she wasn’t sitting in the bathroom alone or completely bored, but again it’s just cruel to me. I mean for heavens sake, they tell people who do, “time outs” for only the amount of minutes as their age. So at two, go to time out for two minutes - they did it FIFTEEN times that. Curious if people think I’m over reacting (I’m mostly over it, it just breaks my heart thinking of her sitting there all day long) or if you agree with this method. I have a feeling anyone willing to learn about EC would NOT think that 30 minute thing was a good idea, but I could be wrong! Thanks for listening lol, have a good one! And I’m a new subscriber but I already love your channel, Shayla!

*** my whole point in this comment, is yes, I too know a lot of parents whose child(ren) are afraid of the potty, especially for poos, and so was my child. I think my daughter was, because of her experience because she was fine at first, but even though it took sooo long to get her trained, I didn’t push it- at all! One day she just started going and we didn’t even need pull ups at night.

I really like your approach to EC. I am nowhere near kids although I like the idea for when I do have them, but I was thinking trying to "catch" everything would be stressful. Your approach of "getting her used to it" rather than "have to do it all" is much more relaxed, especially for when with other people or out of the house.

I am on baby #4. Started EC with all of them at birth. All 3 older ones were out of diapers full time by 1 yo. And by 18months old I could trust them to tell me. No need to check up on them. In South Africa this is still a way foreign concept and I don't even know anybody doing this. People think we are crazy but every time I see 3yo pooing in their pants/diapers, I know that it was the right thing for our family to do. Keep on going, your relaxed attitude is actually beneficial towards the whole approach.

Shayla! I just posted a 24hours with an elimination communication newborn! I started at 2 weeks for fun but my journey is much like yours, catch more catch less. In months 5 and 6 with growth spurt and somehow she doesn't poo everyday, I gave up and restarted again at month 7th. Right now, I'm just catching poop because she is just heavy (I take her over the sink) and for me...for now..that's good enough. hahah Unlike you, I failed at cloth diapering (hate laundry) and find disposables working really well with EC.

Hey Shayla! 😄We did EC through Andrea’s resources too! The diapers, undies, potty, everything. I do love Andrea and how passionate she is about this. We started at 9 mo and he was potty trained by 18 mo - telling me he has to poo and pee. Then…we hit a major regression soon after, which is common, and had to take a big step backwards (advice from the Go Diaper Free book). Then we tried again and took a while. At 2 years old we did the potty training also through Andrea’s book. Not a short road. Now he is 2 and 9 months and tells us when he has to pee and poo, likes to go on his own actually. It’s great. Still wearing pull ups for naps and bedtime bc he drinks a TON of water and I just don’t want his sleep disturbed. I feel like it will happen naturally. In hindsight, EC was a lot of work, and frustration and joy! With baby 2 on the way - a girl - I’m still not sure if I want to venture on this road again. Maybe dabble in it. Curious what you did with Baby 2…?

We haven’t started yet but we started at 6 months with AJ so I’m not worried. We did it pretty loosely but what I did love was that she wasn’t afraid of the potty. A good starting point for EC is when they start eating solid foods and they can sit, so some time after 6+ months. The back and the muscles are ready and they need that extra help with the new type of poop, which is now more regular. Starting earlier can also be beneficial, again if the baby is starting solids earlier or the baby has problems with colic or constipation. There is no need to catch everything in the early months. For actual results, you have to be prepared that at some point you have to try and be as diaper free as possible. Baby has to learn what wet feels and try to communicate its needs. A good time for that is during the summer, after 12 moths of age, when both mama and baby feel they are ready and can work on that.

We definitely did at about 9 months. We designated a week or maybe a couple days shy of a week, for naked observation. It helped a ton. I think because they’re developing so quickly, their cues are changing too. They’re more busy now and also communicate in different ways now. It turned into a lot more transition catches for us at that point but at about 10.5 months he got back into signaling more. I asked the Go Diaper Free group/Andrea and they kind of helped me through it. Keep at it!

Shes now 2y 8m and will reliably go into the bathroom get her stool turn on the light and go potty she still has accidents but I’m so glad we introduced the potty early also will say she’s pooped in the potty since she was a year old (few accidents on the way to potty) using EC for poops is definitely the way to start🙌🏼

I have question to all of you who started early. When did your babies start going on their own? My mom started potty training my sis at 11 months and she was 13 months when we removed the diaper completely. She had accidents but she started going on her own at 14/15 months. She was genuinely happy doing it. I was wondering if I start very early with my own, like from 3-4 months when they are more aware of what’s going on, would they be able to sign/ tell they need to go before they are 12 months? I know they can’t hold and would pee immediately after they say/sign it, which is okay because at least they’d be aware of it happening. I just want to avoid having walking, talking baby with diapers. I just feel like it’s holding them back. Making them aware of their body early makes more sense to me. But I haven’t seen many videos of 1 year olds who have been introduced to the potty since birth, so I am not sure if it makes any difference if you start at birth vs 11 months. Where I live babies are usually out of diapers before their 2nd birthday and I was always super confused when I would travel abroad and see a 2 year old screaming for ice cream in diapers

How do you breastfeed and at the same time ec?? I have the top hat potty for my almost 2 month old and I think he does wet his diaper when he feeds so I want to ec during his feeds but I can’t figure out the positioning!

You concentrate on breastfeeding and bonding, forget potty training ,that will come later.

Hello, I have been trying EC with my 3 month old and its working but im worried she will hold it when she gets older and it might create health issues. Did you just give her probiotics or how did you do so she would stop?

I started putting her in a normal toilet from very little to try and catch the poops. Then we stopped and now that she is eating solids I started again. She is very comfortable in the toilet and I catch most of the poops which is my goal.

Ugh we were! She’s 20 months now and was consistently telling us when she had to poop and usually AFTER she peed but now she’s not even saying anything. But we’re really not trying very hard lol
