Elimination Communication second time parent
Elimination Communication is potty training for babies! I know... it sounds kind of insane but I'm so glad we did it with our first and we started around 6 months with our second.
It's way easier to clean up after, wastes less (cloth or disposable) diapers and helps transition them to potty training when their toddlers!
In this video I talk about the differences between do it with our first and with our second.

I learned about EC from KZfaq and did it from birth with my daughter using only transitions (and we actually skipped the naked observation time…) happy to say we just finished potty training her at 17 months! Totally worth it ✅

I love you for your no stress/low stress approach to baby/motherhood things. I know it comes with a cost, so thank you for all the unseen work that you do to bring us these videos. I really believe they’ve helped me take some stress off myself as a first time mom. I want to do ec, but I’ve been dreading it a little thinking I have to get it right every time or have to go “all in” for it to work.

Part time ec has been really fun for us! I love catching my 6 month olds poop: it feels great when we successfully communicate, and it's easier for him to poop while in the squatting ec hold, rather than fuss for a long time when trying to poop lying down. Sometimes we do after nap pees also, and sometimes we don't do anything at all. Parenting is hard! Just do what brings you joy if and when you have the energy for it. You're doing great!

This was so helpful! We just wrapped up EC with our 17 month old and it was honestly so easy because we part time ECed. We were super similar to you in that we did mostly 80/20 cloth/disposable, easy catches, some obvious cues and very go with the flow. I’m expecting our second this summer and definitely plan on doing EC again.

We started with just toileting her first thing in the morning, and offering an opportunity before getting in the car, and on the off chance I had the thought we should try / noticed a cue. Then we added after naps and at diaper changes (so she could finish). Super low stress, and I am so much more confident and enthusiastic about it with baby two.

Perfect timing 👌🏻 just watched this while my 11 week old is on the potty. EC has been amazing for us! We started at 6 weeks once my husband went back to work and I wish I had started sooner. My babe had the hardest time pooping and I was resorting to using the windi to get poop out. Once we started on the potty he started going almost every time I’d put him on. I don’t EC off cues either but we use the potty after every feed and it works so well for us. He never poops his diaper and he seems to just know that’s when we go potty 🤷🏻‍♀️ I’m hopeful that once he starts peeing less often we can do full on potty training.

I also have my second child and I am much more relaxed. I started with both of them at birth. With the first I did EC at night too, now I only do it when he really tells me to. It is crazy I have to say with 3,5 months he started saying “kaken” because I always say “kacki “ ( I am from Germany 😂). So now when he tells me “kaken” he really has to poop of pee (for him it’s the same 😂). I also incorporated sign language which he is starting now a little over four months old. I am using cloth diapers as a backup and disposable at night but also I am not stressing out about it during the day. I tell myself every diaper saved is a good one 🙏👍

Toilet training too early can lead to incontinence issues, UTIs, constipation... but I think that's mostly if there's shame tied to accidents. Which is one reason i think low stress EC is fantastic.

I just clicked on this video because I'm interested in EC for my fourth baby who is now six months. I have a friend who raved about it with her first, but I'm not sure if it will work with all these other kids distracting me, haha. You pointing out that 2000 years ago there were a lot of great things, but also people died, had me laughing 😆 You earned my subscribe with that nugget of truth and wisdom!

I’ve been thinking about doing elimination communication with my 4 month old son. We also do the 80/20 cloth diaper thing. HOWEVER, I also have taught him the sign for “potty”. This is so helpful!! He tells me when he’s gone potty or when he’s currently peeing. I’m not too sure how to merge the going potty on the actual potty and the signing potty thing yet, because he’s not really consistent with signing when he’s actively going. Idk, all this to say- thanks for this video! Super interested in it, and I’ll go listen to your podcast about it now!

Before I had a baby I really wanted to try EC. After I had the baby and was a mess postpartum I learned how convenient disposables are. But I still have this goal of getting away from diapers early. The question that always bothers me is "how early is too early?". But now that I heard you say people used to potty train their babys between 12-18 months I feel like we should be fine starting soon. Thank you for always giving this intresting informations! ❤️

Postpartum is tough! I didn't start trying out ec before 4 months because things were too exhausting and overwhelming as is. You're doing great! Andrea has some very helpful resources on starting at different ages, if you're interested. And remember: in traditional societies, there's always a pair of helping hands available to potty a baby or support parents. So it's normal that we can't do it all on our own. We do our best and that's ok.

My first, especially as an infant, if she woke up screaming, it meant she needed to pee. Sometimes she wouldn't be fully awake, and I'd set her in the toilet, she'd let it out, and then be back to sleep immediately. It was amazing. Getting home from a trip when she was asleep, I'd sometimes have her sleep pee on the toilet. She thrived on dream feeding so I didn't stress as much about waking her up when she usually slept restlessly if she needed to pee more.

Was inspired by you to try EC when my daughter was about 4 months old. She’s now 9 months. My baby HATES reusables (she will cry whenever I put one on her) and we tried for a while to use them but she was so unhappy wearing them, so we use reusable wipes instead of wet wipes (we’ve used one packet of wet wipes only since she was born) and disposable eco nappies. She still wets her nappies, but we pop her on the potty in the morning and sometimes in the afternoon. She now poos on the potty most mornings and has done since she was about 5 months old. We do that grunt/straining sound and she learned within a few weeks to make that sound while she is doing a poo, so if she makes it we pop her on the potty (if it’s not too late!). EC I think can for sure be used simply as a way to make potty training easier. I nannied so many kids through potty training who hated pooing on the potty because it felt so unnatural to them after two years+ of pooing in a nappy. I am hoping that having done EC with her will mean that when she’s fully ready for the potty it’ll be an easier transition. Thank you SO much Shayla for making EC so accessible in terms of simplifying it, making it feel less overwhelming and making it something flexible. It doesn’t have to be all or nothing. It works so so well for our family, and the best part is only having to change a really pooey nappy once or twice a week.

I ECed my baby from 2 weeks old. after a few months only worried about catching the kakas (which makes a huge difference when using cloth diapers) because kids dont seem to notice peeing as much and it was too stressful trying to 'catch' them. my daughter was using a regular potty by 6 months and had graduated to the toilet by 1 year. she had a lot of time diaper free time at home but she always had a diaper as a 'back up' she was fully clean (ie: no night time diapers) by around 2/5 - 3 years i think (its hard to remember because its all been such a gradual process) i can not recommend EC enough, literally cant imagine parenting without it.

Also when baby was newborn i would give a 'pottitunity' every time she woke in the night to feed. she would stay fully dry and clean all night because she would always pee pee or kaka in her little pot given the chance...was literally amazed by that!

In case anybody needs to hear this. My 22 month it's pretty much potty trained. She only poops half the time in the potty, but she pees in the potty and is even dry most nights. I used to scroll in the comments and see people say how easy it was, but with my daughter it was easy at first, ( we would only go through maybe 1-3 diapers a day) and then around 10 months she would just throw such a big hissy fit. ( I think it might be because I went back to work) Then she regressed pretty hard ( only going once a day if I was lucky) and only started up again around 14 months. I would feel like a bad mother when everyone seemed to say that their kid was so easy and fast to potty train. Pretty much everyone said that their kid was potty trained around 15-18 months. Don't give up. It took my kid longer, but now we just have to worry about #2. We started when she was 2 months old.

Don't focus on getting them potty trained. Being able to catch even one pee is going to save one diaper. I am an Indian and in my husband's house none of his siblings grew up on diapers and so even his grandmother didn't like even cloth diapering. I didnt use any type of diapers on my daughter and yes, some days or at some phace they can be incoporative but being able to catch atleast one pee reduces that much work so never be discouraged. At first it was overwhelming for me to not use diapers but now I am glad that I didn't. It's more easier, less laundry. Less diapers to deal. My daughter is 2 and half( not completely potty trained). As kids grow they sometimes intentionally pee on the bed, never did that when she was small ( she get off the bed). So because you were able to ec a newborn doesn't mean he is going to follow that when he grew up. It takes 3 years any ways to get completely potty trained.

FTM, still pregnant. Would you say that practicing communication is still even valuable for a baby who will be mostly disposable diaper wearing? I feel like this method is so common sense but I also don’t want to deal with accidents or public situations, I would rather just do occasional catches when she’s most likely and hope that at least helps speed up the process of potty training

Our urologist told us that most people with bladder-problems are potty trained too early. Cause children realise that they can play of relax or make their parents happy when they pee. That cause pee-ing with force instead of pee-ing by relaxing. And that causes bladder problems later in life. How can you EC babies without creating this problem?
@jeslaabduljaleel8518
@jeslaabduljaleel8518 Жыл бұрын
When you ec a baby, they are not adjusting their time to our time but we are catching the cues or predicting the time of their potty needs. So there is nothing like forcing. If you miss the time they will pee or poop outside potty, they won't hold it.

They both were super early. Sometimes it’s a personality thing, sometimes they’re not interested! I’ve heard babies usually either developed their gross motor skills (crawling) OR fine motor skills (picking things up, feeding themselves etc). Promise no rush. But wr did lots of tummy time, time in the carrier and limited “containers” like swings. Which built the core strength

We potty trained our son at 20 months. Everyone says boys are the worst to potty train and that we were crazy to do it so early…..HIGHLY recommend. Highly! Do not expect your 20 month old to tap you and say “hey lady, I gotta go potty”. That’s not the objective. But we put our son on the potty when we see his cues and he is straight up in undies as a 21 month old kid. Poops in the toilet like a champ. Best decision! Ever. Go early!
