Fixing a Honda HSS928 Tilt (Seized Gas Assist Damper)

Step by Step!
Today we'll be fixing the tilt mechanism on a Honda HSS928 snow blower, by removing, and lubricating a seized Gas Assist Damper.
Honda uses a 2-way Gas Assist Damper with a manually operated relief valve, to allow the auger housing on the snow blower to tilt backwards and forwards.
This is for 2 reasons; 1 is for cutting higher snow drifts, and the 2nd being increased mobility during transportation.
A common issue with this tilt feature, is that the Gas Assist Damper sometimes gets seized into the compressed or extended position.
This usually happens during storage, when the snow blower has sat for an extended period of time, and has not moved from that position.
Once the Gas Assist Damper seizes, it will not allow the operator to change the position of the snow blower's auger housing.
If the Gas Assist Damper gets seized in the compressed position (Raised auger housing) the snow blower will not function properly to clear snow from your drive way.
Additionally, if the Gas Assist Damper gets seized in the extended position (Lowered auger housing) the snow blower will be difficult to move.

Fixed my snowblower in no time while watching your video. You made it easy to follow. The local service dealer said they don’t repair gas shocks because they are only $40 or $50 dollars to buy & another $100 labor to install. Great job Jake.

Yes here in Canada the OEM ones go for hundreds and of course the labor for them to change them, 9/10 they just get seized and need some lubricant sprayed in them. Glad you got fixed up!

It's July now , and i've decided to look into my hs724 "won't go up or down problem" . I spent half a day looking for a parts list , not knowing what i was dealing with . Checking youtubes was fruitless until I found Jake . Wow , that's the problem I have . And it's called a Gas Assist Damper . Who Knew . Well , I watched the video once yesterday and once today ; followed the instructions exactly , and 30 minutes later , the damper is perfect . I'm a genius . So , so thankfull to the eliminator .

If you tell me what you originally searched for (when my video didn't come up) perhaps I can add that to the video tags and it might come up for the next person who searches. For example, if you typed into Google "Honda hs724 won't go up or down" then I can add that to the video tags and hopefully it helps the next person, as I understand many don't know it's called a gas assist damper.

Thankyou for the video. I have a 2014 HS928 and my tilt feature has not been working this last two winters. I have the opposite problem in that my blower free tilts so I actually have to pull up on the blower the whole time to keep the augers engaged. Needless to say its a tiresome venture. So now I have something to reference so I can try and figure out the problem. Great video.

Super detailed video and your vocal explanation is so well done and easy to follow. My tilting mechanism is only foot lever controlled without the damper. My HS928 only wants to sit in the fully down or fully up position but will not sit in the middle normal operating position. From what I have read online, the spring tensioners wear and stretch overtime. Some have suggested drilling a new hole further back towards the rear and pulling the springs tighter. I have not found a video on this, but I thought I would run this idea by you. Appreciate any help you can give. Thank you.

After taking the damper off, I discovered that the piston/rod was loose, so I could remove it easily by hand. After cleaning and lubing and compressing according to your instructions, a little tinkering with the wire adjustment and now it works as it should. Thanks a million! 🙏🔧

Great video. What if the damper is unable to lock? The pin seems able to travel too far in, and it does not return back out when no force is applied to it. The damper does not lock regardless of pin position though. Have not tested lubing with silicone yet (didn't have any yesterday) - do you reckon the damper can be salvaged? Thanks 🙂

@EliminatorPerformance
@EliminatorPerformance 2 жыл бұрын
That's a good question, put the entire shock into a pail of warm water (not boiling) and let it sit for a bit. Then put it into a vice like I did, and keep spraying the relief rod end to get some lubricant down there. It seems yours is seized, and the rod is also seized in the engaged position. That's a tricky one for sure. Maybe use something like a small punch and small hammer, and tap the rod down after soaking and lubricating. It may shock it, just be careful, as the shock will expand under pressure once it engages

Are Honda snowblowers worth the price in your opinion ??
@EliminatorPerformance
@EliminatorPerformance Жыл бұрын
Yes but the track ones are not needed unless you have a driveway with a steep incline. People without track driven snowblowers always want them until they finally get them and see how much more difficult it makes them to move around and also when replacing them there's more parts and cost involved. The engines are bullet proof though they'll last forever with proper maintenance. Only issue is the hydrostatic transmissions blow seals due to moisture getting in and then it freezes and expands and the seals pop out leaking oil from the trans.

Honda makes good snow blowers but they're grossly overpriced!! YOU'RE TALKING ALMOST $10,000 GET THE HECK OUT OF HERE 🤣 Repairs are so costly very complicated stuff. IT DOESN'T NEED TO BE TO MOVE SNOW IT'S NOT A CAR OR BEING RACED ON A TRACK.. IT'S A SNOW BLOWER 🤣 All those features that this has you really Don't need for snow blowing. That machine is the same price as a freaking car ridiculous. For 1/3 the price You could buy Toro's track or Ariens track system that will do the exact identical thing.. oh yeah alot easier to fix, and cheaper to fix.. AND FYI TORO'S QUICK STICK WHICH IS NOT POWERED BLOWS AWAY THAT MECHANICAL SHOOT 6 DAYS A WEEK AND TWICE ON SUNDAY.. ALL THAT MONEY FOR THE HONDA IT STILL DOESN'T HAVE THE SAME TECHNOLOGY AS THE TORO BASIC MODELS THAT COST $1,300 Toro's ingenious anti-clogging system, The amazing quick stick, And let's not forget no shear pin technology for the auger. That's right You never have to worry about breaking shear pins with the Toro.. The engine shuts off if you hit something hard, or ice etc remove the problem Start it right back up It's ingenious!! I just don't get it. If you're rich and you want to dump money all the power to but it's definitely not worth the price when there are so many other products that can do the same thing.. Cheers

Yea the engines are reliable, that's about it lol if I had to choose, I'd get an Ariens Professional Series snowblower. They beat anything on the market and are usually the go to choice of professionals.
@muzikmon2267
@muzikmon2267 2 жыл бұрын
@@EliminatorPerformance Yes they are and they are a good choice. But Toro according to the tests outperforms all snowblowers believe it or not. They're just as reliable as Ariens, to have a better shoot mechanism the quick stick. They use thinner metal but it's stronger metal cuz it's a specialized metal.. they're easier to maneuver because they weigh less. The anti-clogging technology is awesome aerates the snow back into the front which makes it lighter so it goes further In most cases, and because of this there's less pressure on the belts, the engine in the gears. One reason why the Honda has so many issues with the gearbox because they don't have technology like this to take off pressure. Then of course the awesome no sheer pin technology unbelievable actually really works.. Toro's last just as long as Ariens in perform just as good if not better.. But you can't go wrong with either.. Just the Honda is notorious for a great snowblower But very expensive And they have repair problems.. difficult to fix. Just that Ariens just seems to be old school so it attracts a lot of old school dudes.. with the heavier the bigger the better stuff which is not true.. they're not very innovative. They just stick with whatever works.. That's why I love Toro they know what matters and what doesn't.. But I like your video anyways I just like watching snowblower videos.. ;)
