I thoroughly enjoyed this video, and I can only hope that in my lifetime I get to cast lures of that size and go for some crazy GT fishing. You guys are incredibly lucky with the fish species that are available down in Australia. One question, that is always my concern - that split ring on the belly kind of remained semi-open. Does it create problems afterwards? I know it is impossible with rings of that size to have them neatly closed after rigging....but is there a possibility of a GT opening such a ring? Cheers from Croatia!!!

Hi mate awesome video you have here. I'm new to all of this and have had trouble finding clear answers on a few things. I would be very grateful if you could give me a hand. Thanks a bunch in advance for your time. 1- How do I select what swivel size I need to use? How much heavier does it have to/should be than my main line or leader? 2- How about the connecting split rings? Same question here 3- I see people using a swivel and split ring combo to tie on a lure and I have seen people simply tying them on from their leader. Which one is right?

Hey mate. hope these answers help. 1. I choose swivel based on target species and also it balancing the lure I'm running, So if I'm targeting big GTs I will up the size of my swivel and go for a higher rating but not too big where it looks too big for the lure. The swivel is usually the least concern of my rig as they normally come with a very high rating for instance I use 1/0 swivel for my 130g stick baits and they have a very high 300kg plus rating. 2. The same applies to split rings and I will select according to the power of the target species but be careful not too choose too large of a split ring as they can be hard to get into the eye of the hook. 3. For targeting most pelagic and reef fish species I would always use a split ring and swivel combo, it is a great way to attach your lure and easily removed as will with split ring pliers. If I were targeting smaller inshore species then a simple loop knot will be ok.

great vid. is there any ratio of lure weight and the weigh of hooks, split rings that ensure the balance when the lure swims ? thanks advance for your thought
@elitetackle1721
@elitetackle1721 3 жыл бұрын
Cheers. Hi ilex. So yes definitely but getting the right size/gauge hook is the first initial step I take as if it isnt right then the lure wont swim properly and more importantly the hook up rate could be reduced dramatically. The weight of the hardware is more critical with floating lures but I also would look at how well the lure is balanced when its sitting in the water, for instance I do not want a lure that is so tail heavy that it sinks like a rock vertically which not only looks unnatural but also can cause the lure to snag up easily is shallow water plus on the pause if the lure moves quickly away from the following fish this could turn the fish away. How much different would you say the hook up ratio is when using single hooks rather than treble hooks? 🔥🔥
@elitetackle1721
@elitetackle1721 4 жыл бұрын
So this is generally speaking but lets say I had 6 fish come up on a lure rigged with trebles only I would expect to hook 5 out of the 6 fish from the initial strike BUT I would also expect to drop 1 or 2 so maybe only landing 3-4 fish. So with singles if I had 6 fish come up on my lure I would expect to hook up to 3 maybe 4 fish but once hooked I wouldnt expect any to get off like it can happen with trebles as once a single hook is set in the corner of a fishes jaws it usually stays in......so in the end it probably works out even but then singles has more benefits like more safety to the angler and also the fish. Hope that makes sense :) Cheers Rich

Hi mate, got a number off lures from ya. A few questions is that's cool. With topwater lures that have a swivel as the front hook anchor point, am I right in saying they are not suitable for single hooks, only trebles. My reasoning is that when a single hook is dragged through the water on it's own, it always goes point up, so if you use them on a swivel hook anchor point, they rotate and end up upside down (closing off the available hook gape area, against the body of the lure) or flat against the lure-leaving little hook showing. Do you know what I mean. Like the ReefsEdge Dropoff lures or older non plastic Nomads- they have a swivel instead of a fixed wire loop anchor point. I reckon only 2 singles cable-tied together or trebles are suitable for these (doesn't matter with the rear hook, as very few have swivels on the rear (older nomads did) but even if they do, the hook then sits the correct way up when travelling through the water). I have tested them in a swimming pool, watching wearing a diving mask. Like I mentioned, a single hook being pulled through water, always sits point up. Do you agree single hooks are not suitable for these swivelled front, hooked, anchor point topwater lures. Thanks for your help and loving the lures thanks...Dave

Hi David. So I have never personally tried this rigging configuration before and going on what you have said then that makes perfect sense and based on your findings I definitely would not run the swivel off the front anchor point for all the reasons you stated. I probably would discover this in a different to you and actually test my findings out on the water. I have never wanted to run a single from the front anchor point especially as the hook will always want to lay along side the lure body which straight away rings alarm bells for me. Thanks for you thoughts and I think you have best answered this question yourself from your great dedication and underwater observations. Cheers

@@elitetackle1721 Hi mate, thanks for answer. I don't mean adding a swivel to the belly anchor point. I mean when they have a swivel AS the anchor point standard (like the Fifth Element has that you just showed @ 2:00). Do you think this isn't suitable for a single hook? cos wont the single hook either run flat to the lure underside or upside down (cos that's how a hook naturally swims when pulled through water)? So I have always run a treble for lures with this swivel type belly anchor point, but happy to run a single (BKK Diablo my fave) if has a fixed wire loop belly anchor point (like say a modern Nomad has for e.g.). It just sucks how trebles scratch the hell out of lures though. Have you ever tried a "skippy hook"? like an Owner DH-41 or similar? They hook up better than a single but don't munt the fish as bad as a treble. Same rule applies i.e. can only run on belly if a fixed wire loop belly anchor point. They don't need split rings as just pull on through the anchor point. Like these www.marine-deals.com.au/black-magic-skippy-double-hook-4-0

@@Tight--LiNeZ Hey mate, yep I got you now, so its hard to say because its not as simple as you think, there are other factors that will be pushing that hook around like the action of the lure or water currents etc, so yes I get what your saying but in the end the only way to really know is to see what hook up rates you get with a belly swivel. Even on the strike I think the hook will be dancing around so who knows where it will be positioned.

I personally believe you are rigging them too big. Not such a problem with poppers (as it helps hold them down) but too big for a stickbait, as it ruins the action, totally deadening it. Not such an issue with inline singles, but large trebles weigh so much. I do over-size when after GTs in the islands, but not for kingfish here in NZ. It's all about action. The treble you put on that yellow/blue Fifth Element is absolutely ridiculous. It will just never swim nice. Whatever rear single looks right, I use a treble that is about the same size point to point as the single's gape. That treble you put on is way wider than the single on the rear. Also on another related topic: I never run a single on the front, with a lure that has a swivel belly attachment, as they just turn around or sit flat on the underside, when going through the water. For the belly swivel attachment type, I only use a treble, or my preference, a Baker-Rig (two non-inline singles, back to back with a small cable tie holding them together), which gives better hook up that a single, but isn't as evil as a treble (often blinding fish, if hooked by the tail hook, which is the most common hook-up). When pulled through the water Baker-Rigs sit nice, with a point sticking out either side. They also cause less hook-rash to side of one's fancy lure, than a treble. Cheers. NZ topwater nutter.

Thanks for your thoughts mate and some good points too. I dont agree with you regarding the middle treble especially as all stickbaits have different floating properties. Many stickbaits benefit from having the treble on the belly creating a pivot point helping create a better action. The treble size used can be dictated by the target species and I can assure you if chasing 30kg GTs in shallow water then you will need every mm of that HD treble.

@@elitetackle1721 Okidoki, yup GTs are when I do go big with hook selection. I have just never seen anyone put a treble that big on for a stickbait that size. On an XL size popper, sure. Guess it also depends on the brand hook too. Like a BKK's Raptor-Z or Mustad Kaiju in that size weighs heaps compared to a Gami Recorder, VMC Tropic or Owner ST's. I personally love BKKs cos their singles weigh enough to replace the trebs on a lure that's tuned for trebs, where you need the weight to hold the front down each sweep. They also just seem to be much higher quality than the others, apart from the ones that come factory on Nomad Design lures. They look like BKKs you buy off the shelf, but are made of a cheaper metal & coating. Do you have a fave hook brand you use? Cheers for your info

@@Tight--LiNeZ I choose my hooks based on the fish Im targeting and what best ballances my lures for the reasons we have discussed. Its all about using the best suited hook for the situation and not always bigger is better as you know and then of course theres always an issue with hook set and thats when rod selection is critical. I have used just about every hook there is and they have all had there pos and neg points and imo there is no holy grail hook but the BKK hooks have been great for me and that is my go too hook at the moment.

@elitetackle1721
@elitetackle1721 Жыл бұрын
Well that's your opinion. It all depends on how you handle your fish and then there's the issue with hook up rate with singles. The rod choice is very important in this scenario too.
