I thoroughly enjoyed this video, and I can only hope that in my lifetime I get to cast lures of that size and go for some crazy GT fishing. You guys are incredibly lucky with the fish species that are available down in Australia. One question, that is always my concern - that split ring on the belly kind of remained semi-open. Does it create problems afterwards? I know it is impossible with rings of that size to have them neatly closed after rigging....but is there a possibility of a GT opening such a ring? Cheers from Croatia!!!

Hi mate awesome video you have here. I'm new to all of this and have had trouble finding clear answers on a few things. I would be very grateful if you could give me a hand. Thanks a bunch in advance for your time. 1- How do I select what swivel size I need to use? How much heavier does it have to/should be than my main line or leader? 2- How about the connecting split rings? Same question here 3- I see people using a swivel and split ring combo to tie on a lure and I have seen people simply tying them on from their leader. Which one is right?

Hey mate. hope these answers help. 1. I choose swivel based on target species and also it balancing the lure I'm running, So if I'm targeting big GTs I will up the size of my swivel and go for a higher rating but not too big where it looks too big for the lure. The swivel is usually the least concern of my rig as they normally come with a very high rating for instance I use 1/0 swivel for my 130g stick baits and they have a very high 300kg plus rating. 2. The same applies to split rings and I will select according to the power of the target species but be careful not too choose too large of a split ring as they can be hard to get into the eye of the hook. 3. For targeting most pelagic and reef fish species I would always use a split ring and swivel combo, it is a great way to attach your lure and easily removed as will with split ring pliers. If I were targeting smaller inshore species then a simple loop knot will be ok.

Wow!!!!! Really awesome mates!!! Guessing you guys are from down under? I live in Hawaii. Been here my whole life. I commercial fished living on the Big island on my custom built Force 30 boat. Mostly caught Big ahi, 100- nearly 300lb size, plus lots of ono and Mahi Mahi. Lots of deep sea bottom fish, snapper species!!! Then because my home port was in kona, I loved to take my friends out marlin fishing for fun and we get huge blue marlin here!! I probably caught over 200 "Big donkeys" (marlin over 500 lbs) while fishing alone!!!! Incredible challenge doing that by myself!!!! Went to tonga and Micronesia to teach the local fisherman how to catch big ahi and the deep water snapper and it was wide open crazy with huge fish bigger than in Hawaii!!!! Also went to Oman and taught them our Hawaiian big ahi fishing techniques!!!!! Again these places were virtually untouched and unfished back then and just Incredible!!!!! These were government contracts with these countries. Obviously where you guys were in Figi is similar!!! Seems that more people are seeking out the really special places now!!! I was doing those trips back in the 70's and early 80's and the fisherman and their boats were really primitive. Some places just small canoes and virtually untouched!!!! Those doggies are monsters!!!! Deep jigging is so awesome when you find the right spots and with GPS and the high end color video sounders now it must really be Incredible in the world's remaining untouched places!!!! Enjoyed it!!! I'd love to go there sometime and do that!!! We have dogtooth tuna in Hawaii but they are rare and very hard to find and much smaller than those behemoths you guys are catching there!!!! Aloha from Hawaii Don Libbey

Hi Don. Thanks for your thoughts and it sounds like you living the dream over there and have seen many great fish in your time. Harder and harder to find 'untouched' places these days and then theres the issue of getting to these great 'untouched' spots. With the way electronics are these days it makes targeting these trophy fish so much easier. Thanks again for your thoughts and take care :)

I personally believe you are rigging them too big. Not such a problem with poppers (as it helps hold them down) but too big for a stickbait, as it ruins the action, totally deadening it. Not such an issue with inline singles, but large trebles weigh so much. I do over-size when after GTs in the islands, but not for kingfish here in NZ. It's all about action. The treble you put on that yellow/blue Fifth Element is absolutely ridiculous. It will just never swim nice. Whatever rear single looks right, I use a treble that is about the same size point to point as the single's gape. That treble you put on is way wider than the single on the rear. Also on another related topic: I never run a single on the front, with a lure that has a swivel belly attachment, as they just turn around or sit flat on the underside, when going through the water. For the belly swivel attachment type, I only use a treble, or my preference, a Baker-Rig (two non-inline singles, back to back with a small cable tie holding them together), which gives better hook up that a single, but isn't as evil as a treble (often blinding fish, if hooked by the tail hook, which is the most common hook-up). When pulled through the water Baker-Rigs sit nice, with a point sticking out either side. They also cause less hook-rash to side of one's fancy lure, than a treble. Cheers. NZ topwater nutter.
@elitetackle1721
@elitetackle1721 11 ай бұрын
Thanks for your thoughts mate and some good points too. I dont agree with you regarding the middle treble especially as all stickbaits have different floating properties. Many stickbaits benefit from having the treble on the belly creating a pivot point helping create a better action. The treble size used can be dictated by the target species and I can assure you if chasing 30kg GTs in shallow water then you will need every mm of that HD treble.

@@elitetackle1721 Okidoki, yup GTs are when I do go big with hook selection. I have just never seen anyone put a treble that big on for a stickbait that size. On an XL size popper, sure. Guess it also depends on the brand hook too. Like a BKK's Raptor-Z or Mustad Kaiju in that size weighs heaps compared to a Gami Recorder, VMC Tropic or Owner ST's. I personally love BKKs cos their singles weigh enough to replace the trebs on a lure that's tuned for trebs, where you need the weight to hold the front down each sweep. They also just seem to be much higher quality than the others, apart from the ones that come factory on Nomad Design lures. They look like BKKs you buy off the shelf, but are made of a cheaper metal & coating. Do you have a fave hook brand you use? Cheers for your info

@@Tight--LiNeZ I choose my hooks based on the fish Im targeting and what best ballances my lures for the reasons we have discussed. Its all about using the best suited hook for the situation and not always bigger is better as you know and then of course theres always an issue with hook set and thats when rod selection is critical. I have used just about every hook there is and they have all had there pos and neg points and imo there is no holy grail hook but the BKK hooks have been great for me and that is my go too hook at the moment.

Well that's your opinion. It all depends on how you handle your fish and then there's the issue with hook up rate with singles. The rod choice is very important in this scenario too.

What's the difference between these and the 5/0? Would you still go with BKK over the owners?
@elitetackle1721
@elitetackle1721 Жыл бұрын
the 5/0 in all these 3 brands are simply a step up in size compared to the 4/0 size as seen here. Some of the 5/0 trebles will have a thicker gauge material compared to the 4/0 size. If I was fishing for big XXL strong pelagics then the 76s would be my pick but if I was targeting small to mid sized fish then either the 66s or Raptor Zs would be my preference over the 76s

@elitetackle1721
@elitetackle1721 Жыл бұрын
I have tried PE10 and found it was not as affective as PE8 when working the jig. Pe8 seems to be the perfect balance for strength and jig action and also with PE8 I was able to get greater line capacity which was extremely important. I have even tried PE12 but with the larger DTT we have found they can not be stopped no matter what so line capacity was a more important consideration

Hi Brandon. So it all depends on the size of fish im targeting and the main line rating Im using. If I was to target big fish with say a PE8 or PE8 line then yes I could use this method to attach lures and it enables me to quickly swap out lures with my split ring pliers but if Im targeting small to medium fish or using a smaller main line then I would prefer to use the loop knot for attaching lures. Hope that helps, cheers Rich

Good luck michael. My advice is vary the movement and speed of the jigging action and you will find that some species will react differently to others but I would recommend that you start with a medium small lift mechanical action with small quarter turns of the handle to keep the jig in the zone. Good luck

The owner 76 seems to be the thickest gauge of them all but this has its own good and bad points. Also thicker doesn't necessarily mean stronger. the barbs on the 76s are quite big imo and certainly bigger than the Rex's. The 76 barbs stick out quite a bit too.
