Even though she began her career a few years ago, London-born, NYC-raised Ella Mai has been a 2018 success story with a newcomer’s vibe. She’s zoomed from 0 to 100 in a matter of months. When her self-titled album dropped this year, it was easy to hear that the work she’d done on her previous EPs (wisely shaped by DJ Mustard) being refined. Slowly but surely, the musical details and emotional impact of her personal spin on modern R&B became super obvious…and rather irresistible. She’s toured with Bruno Mars, followed “Boo’d Up” with the wonderful “Trip,” and is ready to kick off a 2019 tour in January. Studio album versions are cool and all but hearing songs live is so special when there's a live band backing the vocalists. cuz then the band does their own thing and spices up the original arrangement with their own chord voicings and substitutions to make it harmonically richer. And the drummer can add a bunch of crazy drum fills to build up more energy and make it more exciting. Like the last chorus where everybody's just wailing out on their respective instruments gets me hype as fuck. You can't do any of that stuff on a studio album when you have the constraints of making it radio friendly for more mainstream appeal and trying to balance all the instruments in the mix so that they can play on a wide range of speaker systems. When it's live, the musicians can just say fuck it and go all out, we'll play whatever we feel sounds good
