Indeed. My daughter drives our Prius. She is frequently heckled by Prius admirers. “Wow you married up!” Or “Your dads clearly swimming in the chips”. Just have to accept that as part of Prius ownership.

2008 w/212K miles. Pros: Invisibility - you can speed like a mofo and police will pull over the guy next to you every time. Original brake pads @ 212K miles. Huge cargo volume for construction tools. Cons: Everything you mentioned plus constantly replacing exterior lightbulbs, failed tailgate latch, tailgate trim breaks and falls off, increasing oil consumption, feel very unsafe in todays traffic surrounded by highly distracted/drugged up drivers of 6000lb SUVs and F-150s.

How often do you feel the need to replace the exterior lights and tailgate trims? I am looking to buy a 2008 Prius touring and I’ve noticed these as well
@madcowusa4277
@madcowusa4277 2 жыл бұрын
@@shockwaveforces7910 The headlights are the biggest issue as one goes out every 18-24 months and it can be very difficult to get access. My rear lights got really dim to the point of being dangerous an people were flashing me. Turned out they just needed new bulbs (the old ones were very dark colored, almost burnt looking, but still kinda working). I glued the tailgate trim with fast grab PL construction adhesive (not recommended, but vehicle is approaching end of life for my needs). Great car overall, bit dated now, but fantastic grocery getter/disposable commuterbox.

I just bought a brand new Prius in December and the reverse beep was driving me crazy!! If you go to the dealership, for free, they will change it so that it will only beep once when you put it into reverse. So much better! I also drive a 2008 Prius 160,000 miles so far and love it. My pet peeves are hatchback can only be opened by button on lift on the outside, no release in the dash area. I’m mean how hard would it have been? If for some reason electrical power is lost only way to open is to crawl through rear compartment (means taking everything out of hatch area through the passenger door) then opening a small cover in the tire well to get to the emergency release. I would think those brilliant minds in Japan could have come up with a hatch release along side the fuel door release! Also have had to replace the drivers side low beam headlight no less than 6 times, often lasts only 6 months or less( also difficult to accomplish due to poor design. Never have replaced drivers side.

I've been driving a 2002 WRX since 2002, but my mechanic tells me it's time to sell it, so I bought a 2004 Prius. I've only driven it a couple hundred miles so far, but dang if it doesn't average 45 mpg on the regular, and sometimes 55. And that's with me still driving like I'm in my WRX! I know super milers like to try to get to 65 mpg and beyond, but 45 with regular gas instead of 21 with premium is enough for me right now.

I've had 2 priuses for 10 years not once has anyone asked me anything about them at a gas pump 4: please stop being " that prius driver" problem solved 5: ya that screaming noise is the pump crying in pain that it need to be replaced asap. If you dont do it you will over heat your inverter or electric motors and spend thousands of dollars for a new ones that an $80 electric pump could have prevented. It stays running after the car stops for a reason and that reason is to cool down the inverter slowly to prolong its life electronic dont like drastic quick temperature changes

Had to replace the electric motor battery ( $2000 3 yr warranty at a hybrid auto garage) 5 years ago and still going strong. The thing I hate is that it burns oil a lot. I love my Gen two Prius 2008. I have 170,000 miles on it and use it for only long trips. I use my bike for short trips shopping and commuting. No major issues since I bought it new in 2007 October, 25,000 bucks. Have the original battery no signs of weakness. Car looks great since it’s garage kept and I think it helps the battery last longer since there’s less corrosion on the hybrid battery connections. I have HID headlights and they failed. I replaced them myself without taking the bumper off and they were much brighter than the original stock. The Dash once in a while goes dark but it comes back so far so good. I had the energy saver Michelin tires on it and I replaced them with the regular defender Michelin tires loss a couple of miles per gallon but it handles better and holds the road better. My average mileage is 53 miles per gallon since I only use it for a long trips. it’s a beautiful Barcelona red. in time, I believe it will become my antique vehicle when I upgrade to all electric

As a Gen 1 (2002) owner: 1: My Prius flashes the [R] indicator in reverse, but doesn't beep. 2: 2002 has auto climate, but no steering wheel controls. I often find myself turning the fan to LO so the engine shuts off. 3: My 2002 is invisible. Looks like a nineties Corolla! 4: Excessive EV is a net loss. I usually punch it up to speed on the ICE and make use of the massive torque of the combined system, and cruise on EV. 5: Gen 1 has no coolant pump. Might consider adding one...

There was a release on the evening new when hubrids 1st came out, they said the mileage they get is overestimated. Then i was driving a friends Prius, after leaving the Las Vegas area I passed a gas station expecting one soon, as we have in the midwest, well there wasnt any gas station and the prius was running on empty for about an hour and made it to a station in Colorado. I was then hooked on them and knew how the news was probably paid off by car companies with no hybrids. As was news release about turmeric but thats another story.

I have a gen 3, an old one but I just got it, it’s great. The beep could easily have been made a bit less ‘industrial’ but still be recognisable as a reversing alert? Like a short cascade of tones or something, and it wouldn’t need to be loud outside or inside, to be really much more than the sound of the Prius, so I might even leave that on then. Funny what you don’t notice - I plum forgot that unlike almost every other car, be they automatic transmission or manual, the shifter actually does stay in a certain position when you choose a gear. The Prius is more like a motorcycle then, they too simply have a fixed position and the rider rocks the lever, but there is nothing to tell you what gear you are in (on more modern bikes, yes there probably is). @8:40 that is a dry bearing type of sound, it’s that mid-frequency oscillation of a pulley of some sort, that is experiencing friction as it rotates, and gets sent into a fundamental frequency ‘wobble’ that is self-perpetuating, when the rotation speed of woteva it is, hits a certain rpm maybe? On the low speed required to save fuel really well, yes, our taxi drivers in my part of the UK drove people nuts when fuel here first shot up in our unnecessary and greed-fuelled energy crisis (puns abound). It hit about three times what you guys pay over there in North America, and it really is not justifiable. Anyway, as others say, double the battery would be better, and it’s interesting that the 5th Prius now has upped the engine to a 2 litre, and yet gets better mpg than any of the predecessors. I am sure you could make use of up to double the battery capacity, but there was the weight penalty back then, as NiMh was the more affordable option, and more easy to manage in terms of charging and overheat/safety risk. I think with the better management of them, Li-ion at the same weight being able to have double the capacity, would be a great update, but these are wishes that should not detract from the big plus points… …if Toyota had marketed these as a new revolutionary automatic transmission vehicle that did away with ratios, yet had no pulleys, belts, friction plates galore, slush box/torque converter/impellers, or indeed the whole hydraulic control ‘circuit’ section, I’d have bought a Prius a decade earlier. The system is really so clever,and simple, it seems based on the principle of the differential, and by clever design does away with weight, fragility and all sorts of stuff that always goes wrong eventually in other transmissions. I couldn’t be more impressed. If you want an exciting car that is more fragile, this isn’t for you! Interesting though, nice to hear someone else’s view on them.

But what I REALLY wish is that, instead of the temperature controls, those up and down switches controlled the fan speed. A lot of times the auto climate control cranks the fan all the way up and I have to navigate into the menu to turn it down and that is a hassle. But overall I really like my Prius. Haven't gotten mobbed at the gas station yet though. :-)

Every time I have a battery issue that darn backup beep resets. And, then I promptly end up backing into things until I remember how to turn it off. I think if you have an ODB and the Dr Prius app, you can shut it off from the app. Occasionally, I have issues with not being able to fill my car. It happens mainly in very hot Temps and it's like it gets vapor locked. Under warranty, the pulled the tank and replaced it, but it still happens at least once a year in the summer. Just smash that gas pedal and have fun!

The fifth pet peeve is one that happens with mine and I've heard happens with pretty much every 2nd gen prius. It doesn't harm anything so it isn't worth replacing to me, so I just ignore it. My pet peeves of my 2007 prius would be: 1. The 12 volt axillary battery is located in the trunk. This makes the battery more expensive and makes it difficult to access the battery if it dies, since you need battery power to open the trunk to access the battery. Luckily there are clamp mounts for a jump start under the hood, but putting the battery in the front and the fuses in the back would have just been way better. (Which apparently is how it is designed in Japan and other countries) 2. The a-pillars block your view of perpendicular traffic or pedestrians. This isn't as bad as my old chevy sonic, but definitely still an issue. 3. The car can be driven without the keys. Where if you leave your car running and walk away to go to the restroom, for instance, and bring your keys with you, someone else can get in and drive it away. They should have designed it to not go into drive if the keys are not present (like most keyless start/entry cars). You wanna leave your prius running in between short stops to get an extra 5 mpg, this is because the engine has to warm up when started, which uses up gas unnecessarily if you just had a short stop. So having the car being able to be driven away if you step out of it for a minute really sucks. 4. The physical key to unlock doors is super small and difficult to use since you cannot get any torque from it being so narrow and small. This really sucks since you can only lock the car manually while the car is running. It will not let you use the key fob or any other method to lock the doors if they keys are not present while the car is running (strange that they designed it that way, seeing as how they let the car drive without the keys inside). 5. Very few cup holders. The prius only has 4 cup holders, two in the front and two in the back (although the two in the back are blocked if you have 3 passengers in the back). A cup holder and storage in each of the rear doors would have been nice.

With your cup holder gripe, there is cup holders in the front door pockets, which I do agree are partially unnecessary.

I had a 2008 Prius and I had the reverse beeping switched off. I do not remember well, but it is either in the hidden service menu (just google the term to find it) or I used the app "Torque" for Android. It is too long ago to remember well, but the reverse beep can be switched off!

My 2009 has 289,000 miles on it with the original engine, battery, transmission. I have the Carfax from 0 miles to 194,000 and it was dealer maintained with only regular maintenance done. The struts and all of the suspension parts are still original. The only replaced items are brakes, tires, fluids and I put a custom stereo in it! It only gets about 30 mpg now, so I think the battery is due for a replacement, but I am struggling to justify the cost as I don't drive much when work is less than one mile away from home.

I've never been bothered by anyone fueling up my Prius. Ever. They just ignore me like they do with any other car I've had. The steering wheel controls are so you can do anything you need to without taking your hands off the wheel. You don't need to hit the climate button, and then the temperature button. I'd like to be able to accelerate more quickly on battery without it just starting the engine. My wife has a newer Avalon hybrid, and it doesn't beep backing up, despite backing up on battery most of the time, and I can take off quickly and stay in EV mode. Though it still starts the engine at around 25.
@datathunderstorm
@datathunderstorm 4 жыл бұрын
Funny that; the UK version of the 2008 Prius Tspirit will do 43mph approximately in unenforced EV mode before the Internal Combustion Engine kicks in. However, it's not really recommended to go long distances in EV mode unless you're cruising down a slight incline (angle the throttle pedal appropriately and you can literally glide using NO propulsion power). Use the same technique to pulse and glide, still saves tons of fuel.

good video but .... 1) beeping can be easily turned off. I did it after 3 days since I bought it. 2) wheel temp control. Actually, due to big windows and 'poor insulation' it is the opposite of your house. At your house no matter what, you can leave your thermostat at 72 summer or winter. In your Prius here is the big difference: when it is super hot outside, in the Prius it is smart to raise the cabin temperature (I do it). On the other hand, on a warm day you can leave it at 72. But on a very hot day, it is better to set it to 75-76 otherwise the ICE/hybrid system will work like crazy because it will be impossible to EVER reach 72... that is why it is nice to be able to change your setting from the steering wheel. I PERSONALLY LOVE IT. I would say 72F when outside is 100F will not work....and actually when outside is 80, if you set it to 72, the car will feel really cold...

My mom bought an '05, new. 1) That beeping in reverse. If I had been the one shopping for the car, I would have refused to buy it, unless I felt SURE that I could eliminate it. DUMB! 2) I LOVE the steering wheel temp controls! I will frequently bump it up or down just one degree, just to get a little more or less cooling. Especially with others in the car feeling a little colder than me. 3) In all the years that we've had this car, and I'm often the one filling the tank, not ONCE has anyone asked me about it. Maybe I'm not approachable? But they ask all the time about my Corvair. ;) 10 bucks to fill the tank... That administration is LONG gone... 4) The battery in these cars is TINY. Yes, you "can" run it, a little, on electric only, but only a LITTLE. Even less with the A/C on. Since you're not recharging it from an external source, it's still going to be recharged from the gas tank. Just hopefully at a time when there can be a little more load on the engine, so it operates more efficiently. I've always said the car should have had a somewhat bigger battery. 5) Mom's car has been making that noise since it was new, so far as I know. It still does. It's never been really loud though. I'll add another 6) I HATE how the car starts MOVING when shifted to Drive or Reverse WITHOUT pressing on the go pedal. Come on folks, it's not a hydraulic automatic with a torque converter! Every single F-ing time I come to a stop in that F-ing car, "Shift to neutral at 6 mph, so it isn't using battery power pulling against the brakes". That's another reason I would have refused outright to buy the car in the first place. DUMB!

Yup gen 4 do beep in reverse. No specific temp control on wheel on gen 4. No attention as gas stations even in oil town Alberta. (maybe because most cab are Prius). Electric only mode is kinda slow..I do find that you are limited in speed and acceleration, if you want to keep it in electric mode. Down town traffic driving is amazing as the engine hardly used even in normal acceleration in the core. Pump noise is not a car problem, that is a maintenance issue. Considering how reliable this car is you should go get it replaced. You already suspected this is a coolant reservoir pump a trip to the dealer or A competent mechanic would be good. Maybe use a stethoscope type device to localize if you want to try and replace yourself.

@@shockwaveforces7910 it's got 200,000. But I've been buying Toyotas for decades. You will not find a more reliable vehicle manufacturer. Plus I'm a master mechanic, so if it has any issues, I can fix it np. The main thing with THIS vehicle is to make sure the battery pack for the hybrid system is good. Engine, Transmission, and Hybrid battery are the most expensive "parts" of this car. Hope the info helps. *EDIT* Also, parts do wear out. I replaced the brake rotors and pads up front, drum shoes and springs in back, four wheel bearing assemblies, and the front and back spring/strut assemblies. The struts are supposed to last about 50-100K miles. The ones I took off were the ORIGINAL assemblies and the suspension was terrible. Nice and smooth now. Wheel bearings were 180 for the set. Struts/spring combos were 300 for the set. Rotors and pads were 135. Shoes and springs were 53. I also bought new plugs, air filter, cabin filter, oil filter, oil change, and some products to clean the fuel system, injectors, and cylinders. I also cycled ATF through the engine oil for 50 miles to free up and clean the piston rings before doing the oil change (Don't do this unless you know what you're doing, it can destroy your engine very rapidly if driven MORE than 50 miles with ATF in the oil. ATF= Automatic Transmission Fluid). So I paid 3,000 for the car and spent another 750 or so for all the maintenance parts that the previous owner failed to do SEVERAL times over. I'm sure I'll get another 100-200K out of the engine before I rebuild it. In light of RECENT gas prices, it was a SOLID purchase =]
