Remember Jamal, that Bernie Taupin is the man who wrote the lyrics to Elton's songs. And yeah, he says he was dreaming of simpler laid back lifestyle, while knowing it was way too early in his career to be able to pull it off. He had to travel the long road and pay his dues before he'd be able to achieve some balance in his life.

From Songfacts: Bernie Taupin wrote the lyrics to this and most of Elton's other songs. He often seems to write about Elton, but this one appears to be about himself. The lyrics are about giving up a life of opulence for one of simplicity in a rural setting. Elton has enjoyed a very extravagant lifestyle, while Taupin prefers to keep it low key. Speaking about the song, Taupin said: "It's funny, but there are songs that I recall writing as if it was yesterday. And then there are those I have absolutely no recollection of, whatsoever. In fact, I'd have to say that for the most part, if someone was to say that the entire Yellow Brick Road album was actually written by someone else, I might be inclined to believe them. I remember being there, just not physically creating. There was a period when I was going through that whole 'got to get back to my roots' thing, which spawned a lot of like-minded songs in the early days, this being one of them. I don't believe I was ever turning my back on success or saying I didn't want it. I just don't believe I was ever that naïve. I think I was just hoping that maybe there was a happy medium way to exist successfully in a more tranquil setting. My only naiveté, I guess, was believing I could do it so early on. I had to travel a long road and visit the school of hard knocks before I could come even close to achieving that goal. So, thank God I can say quite categorically that I am home."
From what I understand this song is about brothers one was enlisted to go to war on foreign land and the other was left behind and how he misses his brother

The main theme of the song is in the part of the verse “you can’t plant me in your penthouse. I’m going back to my plough.” He isn’t going to let anyone tell him how to live and won’t allow fame and fortune to define who he is. His future lies beyond the yellow brick road. Back to his roots. He may have drifted away from them after getting a taste of the high life but he knows he needs to go back in order to feel fulfilled and happy again. "I bet they'll shoot down the plane" means - the media execs will do anything to try and prevent you from getting out so they can keep riding the gravy train.

Saw him in Vegas. Elton has always been the best piano man. He had his son visually walking thru a yellow brick road. All animated.. spiritual I tell you.

I’ve always thought this was his goodbye statement to a rich lover who used his money to lure him in. And then he woke up and realized he was just another accessory. But I guess it applies to the music industry, too. Great reaction!

Yes, I also interpreted it that way. Kind of a "kept boy" scenario.

The first time I heard this song was in 1974 when I was in 7th grade...walking through the school cafeteria wehearing and being drawn into those opening descending chords coming from a table in front of the window and a group of smiling shining 9th grade student body officers who kept rewinding and replaying that song on s trendy portable cassette tape player...I've been an Elvis fan ever since. Your show is really my favorite because of the music! Thank you for revisiting and truly appreciating she some of the hidden treasures of my generation. There is one
