Elvis supported MLK both financial and musically. He cried on the set of his movie, "Live a Little, Love a Little" his co star Celeste Yarnell said he wept so much that she hugged him for a while. He was killed 8 miles from Elvis' Memphis home of Graceland. His manager said it was too controversial to sing and his fans won't like it, and of course Elvis ignored him and sang it and it is one of the best of his career. when he sang it on the comeback time magazine had on it's' cover, Elvis Presley sings a protest song". thanks man you get Elvis. react to "Elvis Presley King of Kindness' he gave away almost as much as he made. Be Blessed

I had never believed it when my professor in college, both a musicologist and professional symphony musician, himself, told me that he viewed Elvis Presley to be the greatest overall singer of all time. "Why?," "What the hell?," so many of us said? With him first going on to ask what's Frank Sinatra's greatest and/or signature song? "My Way," someone eventually said and then the professor proceeded to show us various polls from over the years which listed Sinatra as the greatest singer ever. Ray Charles and Aretha Franklin were also on top of some, and Elvis, too, on a few. But the point of the exercise was to simply show us Sinatra was considered by many, though it's subjective, to be the greatest. The class then listened to Sinatra's "My Way," and then Elvis' version, back to back. With the room being roughly split as to whose version was better, "which proved what I thought?" But then the professor showed us Elvis rocking out to 'Trying to Get to You' from the Elvis 1968 Comeback Special. With the point ultimately being that regardless of whose version of 'My Way" you preferred, Elvis was right there, totally at home playing in Sinatra's backyard for lack of better parlance. But as to Sinatra playing in Elvis' backyard, he said, it couldn't be done, as he said "[i]magine Sinatra, (who he totally loved) trying to do that rock number?" Then going on to say that he had found no singer who had ever sang more genres, more majestically, than Elvis, & he challenged us to find out for ourselves by looking at his full catalogue of Rock, Pop, Soul, Country, Ballads, Gospel and more. And, when done, I admit I became a convert who was so, so doubtful, at first, I can't even begin to tell you. But from rocking out to 'Trying to Get to You' from that Elvis 1968 Comeback Special, to singing about the dream of humanity coming together with "If I Can Dream," from the same show, I believe you will see what I mean. Elvis even had a voice that could be operatic if you go and listen to 'Hurt' and his version of "You'll Never Walk Alone" will tell you why he has also sold more gospel records than anyone, as well as just tons more, overall. But, with pop and 'Such A Night' to a ballad such as 'They Remind Me Too Much of You,' he did it all, and so, so damn well. While for soul, check out 'Long Black Limousine' or 'You're Wearin' That Loved on Look' which is a bit of another number. Because as Elvis' one album cover says, there's 'Something for Everybody.' Also, and if ultimately you don't think Elvis is the best, that's totally cool as there really is something for everyone!;-) Great channel and I wish you the best!!! ~ Christopher Tyler P.S. Those recommendations are only, quite literally, the beginning!

Elvis Presley's "IF I CAN DREAM" From his 68 Comeback Special, was Elvis's Powerfully Sung Tribute to Dr Martin Luther King Jr, after his Assasination in Memphis Tennessee where Elvis Lived. It is Based on the message of MLK's "I Have A Dream" Speech, and was written for him by Earl Brown with this in mind. It also honored the Memory of Robert F Kennedy, who was also Assasinated during the same time period. This was a Turbulent Time in America, 🇺🇸 with the Civil Rights Movement, Protests and Riots against Vietnam War and it seemed as if the Country was being torn apart and Elvis wanted to bring a Message of Hope and Unity to the Nation. "If I Can Dream" is at it's heart, a Civil Rights Song. Because this was a New Song, Elvis Did several practice take's in the Black Suit and White Suit while Filming the 68 Comeback Special, which included Two Stand up and Two Sit Down Sessions before Live Audience's. The Original Live Closing Preformance of If I Can Dream In the White Suit you first reacted to, was in my opinion pure Perfection, so it will always be my favorite. If Your Just Asking which Look I prefer on Elvis...White Suit Or Black Leather, do you really need to ask ?? B L A C K L E A T H E R ❤ 😁

Thx for this version. I always believed both versions should be seen. Some BACKGROUND INFO for the SONG: As per Steve Binder, the producer-director of the '68 special, Elvis, Binder & others were together in the studio when they heard noise coming from the TV in the next room; it was the TV news broadcast that Robert Kennedy had just been assassinated. Binder, Elvis, et al sat up until about 4 a.m. talking about the turmoil in the world at that time w-Elvis expressing his thoughts & feelings, also the assassination of Pres. Kennedy & Vietnam. Binder asked songwriter Walter Earl Brown to compose a song based on those discussions. The song is notable for its similarities to Martin Luther King’s wish for a world of peace and harmony. The red tie was for the blood shed in Vietnam. No one put the emotion & passion into a song like this man -- coming from his soul & his gut - & we got to feel all of that. Elvis was so extremely nervous about doing this special that he told Binder he forgot the songs, didn't remember any of the lyrics & wasn't going out there, & Binder said I don't care if you walk out, just say hello & walk off, but you ARE going out. And out he came.

He lip-synced this one. The only authentic live version is when he performs it in the white suit.

@@JoAnnKlingaman-iu4lm Yes, indeed he did. As a matter of fact he "did this song" twice by lip-syncing it in the black leather suit. And, of course he lip-synced "It Hurts Me" in the fight scene. That's all too obvious. It's quite plain between 4:28 to 4:29 for the words "There's a beckoning candle."
