Elvis recorded Can't Help Falling In Love for his 1961 film Blue Hawaii. The single became a #1 hit in the UK and #2 hit in the USA. During (almost) all of his over 900 concerts from 1969 to 1977 he used an uptempo arrangement of Can't Help Falling In Love as a show closer - a final salute to his fans.

Elvis, with a few exceptions, always close his show with this song in the 70’s.

There were a few exceptions in 1971 when he used The Impossible Dream as a closer.

In the UK we never saw him live and this film 'That's The Way It is' from which this song is taken was the first time we had seen him in concert. It is very difficult to fully appreciate and analyse this performance in isolation without seeing the film which I first saw in 1971 in a huge cinema in London and at the finish of the film the whole audience spontaneously rose and clapped for a good 5 minutes.

I'm a longtime Elvis fan in my late 20's and I love seeing your reactions to performances from "That's the way it is", it's my favorite since I was a kid! Would love to see you react to "Just Pretend" and "You lost that loving feeling" from the same concert :)

That's why he sang it faster. He had already done about an hour or so concert and this was the end , so, he just wanted to get through with a song he had sung hundreds of times before. In other words, Elvis was just plum tired !

I enjoyed your analysis of the unusual performance of this song and was somewhat amused that you assumed this was the original version. He closed most of his shows with it, and it's been said that Elvis never performed the same song exactly the same way twice. Of all the versions of him singing this one, this is the fastest I've seen. I'd like to see you react to his original version: Elvis Presley - Can't Help Falling In Love (From "Blue Hawaii") (2:50).

This is just Elvis trying not to get bored with the same old song, his original version much slower and iconic.

When he first recorded this song, he did do it much slower, but Elvis always enjoyed changing things around. I think he got bored with singing the same old thing over & over again at his concerts, so he would change tempo or add things to it. So yes, when he recorded this song originally, years before, he did sing it more slowly.

So he would most times end the show with this, he would extend it because he would interact with crowd give away scarfs kiss the girls etc. his normal version is slower

Show me another singer that is also a comedian when they are performing ...Singers often take themselves so seriously when they're doing a song , and Elvis did to sometimes , but Elvis liked to joke around with his band AND the audience. Elvis was such a cool guy in so many ways.

Anthemic!! He took a ballad ( which I personally find a bit dull) and turned it into an anthem to close most of his shows. Notice how he has bits hanging down from his suit, his hair is everywhere....he's damn tired and has given his all by this point. His backing singers really drive the climax. This is a beautiful ending. You do analyse really well, noticing the subtleties of his performances rather than trying to analyse lyrics and meaning x you're right about the instrumentation nowadays- everyone covers songs in a stripped back way. It's fine but who doesn't love a full sound!! For his 70s shows he wanted a full sound so he hand picked his rhythm section lead by lead guitarist, James Burton and driven by drummer Ronnie Tutt plus a 16 piece orchestra plus 2 gospel vocal groups!! It worked beautifully and showed his progression from back in the 50s when it was a guitar, bass and rhythm guitar x

I second Kathi's suggestion that you check out Elvis's version from his movie "Blue Hawaii". As Kathi already noted, Elvis never performed the same song the same way twice. Which is interesting, especially in comparison to nowadays when performers are more routine. (I understand there are reasons for this.) I'm not hating, not at all. I do like some performers of today. I'm just saying, it's interesting when you see a performer (like Elvis) switching it up and giving a "routine" song a different "feel" or vibe during his live performances. Thanks again for your reaction! Really enjoying your reactions to Elvis, btw!
