This happened on my first birthday, October 28th, 1956. Needless to say I grew up on Elvis. His influence is eternal.

And what was so different is there wasn't only white girls but Spanish and black girls started to come out -- teenagers... young 20s. Elvis was a YOUTH MOVEMENT first, and he KNEW IT. And what a platform to lead into the civil rights movement just a few years later, in the 1960s. Elvis was a huge supporter of the NAACP and Martin Luther King. When MLK was shot, Elvis cried. During his funeral Elvis cried on the shoulder of his co-actress (they were on set at the time filming a movie and he went into his dressing room and just bawled like a baby.) Elvis decided to dedicate a song to the nation, in honor of MLK and another national figure, Robert Kennedy (who also did a lot for the civil rights movement). Here it is and its maybe his greatest performance. Certainly there is no other social justice song that made it this far and is that well written and performed (NBC and Elvis' manager did not want this song as the race riots were in full swing -- but Elvis sent a powerful message song that still resonates). The very first time Ed Sullivan allowed Elvis to be on his show, the cameramen were instructed to only film him from the waist up, because at that time the public and the networks felt that Elvis's moves were vulgar.....but it wasn't long before they accepted the full camera shot of Elvis during his performance, due to the pressure of the public.

My mom loved him. I heard him my whole life. My mom's brother was in the Army with Elvis. My Uncle and him were best buddies. The women always freaked out like that all all his shows.

Ed Sullivan told him he couldn’t move his hips. He just had to give us a sneak preview of the next time he would come back. His dance moves get better and better. So does the screaming.❤

I've seen a lot of reactions to this performance. Yours topped them all by far!!! Elvis hated being called Elvis the Pelvis. He thought it was childish for an adult to come up with that nickname. When he performed at a concert in Florida, he was called in by a judge and told that he could do side to side movements but nothing else or he would be arrested. The judge attended the concert. Elvis explained to the audience what was going on and only moved his little finger. Every time he did that the crowd went crazy. By the end of the concert the judge was a fan.

He was a character, for sure. One of the many reasons we love him still.

I love watching these live versions of Elvis back in the early days. This was on "The Ed Sullivan Show" in 1956. Many times you will see the backup quartet singers called "The Jordanaires" with him. They performed with Elvis in live appearances, on his recordings & in his films in the 50's-70's.

They used to make the cameramen film Elvis from the waist up..he was SCANDALOUS, they thought!!🤣🤣🤣🤣

That's why they called Elvis the showman. He can just come out do nothing people go crazy. He could just like pop his head out behind the curtain girls go crazy. Elvis only had to wiggle his finger & those girls would start screaming. But who could blame them?? Elvis was just 21 here, & he already knows how to make girls swoon all around him. I had recently turned 12 Yrs old when this aired and I recalled my dad snickering while he was watching Elvis and watching my reaction. His 1956 rise to fame, was the talk of the town all over the United States. Obviously, no one knew then, that he could sing any type of song and make it better than the original.

I know this will probably never get seen, but I just HAD to get to the comments on this one. My grandma, Polly Faircloth, was a sunday school teacher in Memphis, TN. She had stories upon stories about Elvis rolling up to church in his pink Cadillac. My favorite will always be the one day he came rolling into the parking lot, the girls up in the second story classroom all ran to the window just hollering. My grandma shooed them girls away from the window, leaned out and hollered down, "Elvis! Elvis you get your butt in this church right now!" Makes me chuckle just thinking about it. For reference, my grandma was a whopping 5 foot 3 and a half "And you better not forget the half!" Gives me the giggles thinking of that little church lady getting on the king of rock n rolls case about being late to church. XD

My mom was dating him back then. I've gotta a pic with them outside Ed Sullivan Theater! My Grandma and GreatGrandma were there too. He was always taking them on drives. Her stories are so cute. That hip & leg dancing was quite salacious by the standards of the day, to the point where one columnist referred to his performance style as "grunt & groin". In fact, rather famously, Elvis's future appearances on Ed Sullivan had the camera crew under strict instructions to keep their cameras aimed above his waist at all times. On topic, you should see him perform a song called "Fever". What makes this song unique is that he tends to make a game out of seeing just how minimally he can move while still driving the women in the audience mad.

Elvis was it! I got to see him in Charleston West Virginia in 1975 and he was fantastic second time he came I was 7 months pregnant and they wouldn’t let me go they the family was afraid I would have the baby he was so motivative.

Big Mama Thorton sang this first. She was a fantastic blues singer. You should take a moment of your time go give her a listen. Elvis had a great sense of humor. He was messing with the audience and they were so crazy. He wad also messing with Ed Sullivan because he was told to stand still and absolutely no "gyrations". They told him the same thing every appearance. He paid them no never mind at all. Lol This was the year I was born. My oldest sister wad eight. She had a crush on him clear through into adulthood. There is just something about these era defining performers that is hard to quantify. Elvis was the right performer with the right message at the right time, Every decade or every generation there is a special talent that people (especially younger people) gravitate towards and identify with. Elvis was definitely that in the 50s his fan base swelled and grew and became a world wide movement of fans. a decade later the Beatles came along. In the 80s it was Michael Jackson that could move millions. in the 90s it would have been Kurt Cobain, but we never got to see that fulfilled. Today I believe that performer is Billie Eilish. The way she is dedicated to her craft and the work she puts in is second to none. The reactions she gets from her fans or "Her babies" as she calls them is pure and powerful. When fans are telling artists that the only reason they are alive and what gets them through the day is that artist music. that is powerful.

Love the ending, laugh. How funny. Yeah I've seen his clip so many times but it always still completely amazes me. But we shouldn't Overlook the athleticism either. Because when he's doing a lot of that stuff he's kind of half moonwalking or something and then he seems double jointed with his knees but then he does a lot of stuff where he goes up on his toes and holds it which if you talk to any ballet player that's ever been on point or whatever they call it they will tell you it takes a lot of core strength to freeze frame in that position and then hold it for a bit.
