Even the Beatles "borrowed" lyrics and riffs Lyrically this song is inspired by two 1950s songs, namely Book Of Love by the Monotones and "I Could Write A Book" by Frank Sinatra and others. Costello's music is borrowed from 1970s Philadelphia soul music but is distinctive enough in its own write (sic) .

He wrote and sang a lot of brilliant songs; I think his vocal style limited his mass appeal to some extent. His records should have gotten more appreciation, but his songs should also have been covered the way Dylan's were.
@theselector4733
@theselector4733 Жыл бұрын
@@pcno2832 EC was very commercially successful earlier on (77' - 81') and sold consistently well throughout his career. In that era there was a transition of sorts happening from the old guard and style to the new, and you also still had the old commercial dinosaurs to compete with who were taking a HUGE slice of the pie (BOSTON, CHICAGO, THE EAGLES, REO SPEEDWAGON, DOOBIE BROS, KANSAS etc....etc....) so it was pretty hard for some of the new wave artists to get a foot in. Then MTV took over in the early to mid 80's and if you weren't a pretty boy or girl you had no chance LOL.

Saw him do this song with Allen Toussaint live, it was a really cool version. Actually accosted Elvis Costello after the show on his way back to his hotel. He was surprisingly nice to me even though I was a sweaty teenager and all I wanted to do was tell him how much all the extra material on his Rhino reissues inspired me to become a wildly versatile musician that could play anything in any style. ...in the middle another sweaty teenager ran up, asked him to sign a This Year's Model LP, and then ran away screaming about it once it was signed. After that Elvis offered to sign something for me, I said I didn't have anything and he said "How about the ticket to the show?" I still have that ticket, and I actually got it signed by Steve Nieve and Pete Thomas not long after that night.

My dad had his greatest songs on cassette while I was growing up. I can't tell you how many times I've heard this song as a child. The one thing that I can say is that it is one of the songs of my youth and I love it! The only thing that I love more than this is my memory of hearing him perform this live with my father in attendance back in 2017!!!

“Even in a perfect world where everyone was equal, I’d still own the film rights and be working on the sequel.” So many great lines including the others mentioned here. This song is heaven as evidenced by the frequent chills up the back of my neck and tears out of nowhere. One of the best bass lines ever, great melody and harmony interplay, and highly emotional. “Man Out of Time” is another fave - both I want to cover in my next band. Cheers EC!

@ianbartle456

Yes it it is, but don't overlook something else that is far far more obvious from where my ears are sitting - that Bruce Thomas' bass-lines are equally things of beauty. Having only just discovered his work, I'll freely admit to being a bit agog and giddy but I'll go out there on a limb and claim his line to Accidents Will Happen is the best pop bass I've heard since Macca's incredible part to George's Something! There said it - any one wanna agree, or take me to task? Oh and for anyone who is uninitiated, Bruce was no one-time wonder. All of his stuff l've been listening to from the EC greatest hits has me deeply impressed. Pump It Up is a beauty - if there's a more driving part from the era I don't know of it - and make no mistake, there WERE some really, really good ones - Clash, Sting, XTC, and the guy from Ian Dury's band, of course. English music form the late 70s to the mid 80s was rich and rewarding. So much great, great music. DID I mention the Las?
