I was based at Brize during my RAF service in the mid 80s, lived in one of the accommodation blocks up near the NAAFI , fairly close to the airfield and often experienced close up views of aircraft coming in of all types, also had great air shows, probably still do.

@jimmd6811 күн бұрын
Roll control/stability.
@Albertkallal11 күн бұрын
the F35 has fly by wire. That means there are computers between the flight stick and the wing control surfaces. So, pilot: Hold this steady high angle of attack. That makes the flight computers work harder. wind and weather: lots of small gusts of wind blowing over the airframe. And you now trying to balance the fighter on rear engine thrust, but you not flying very fast, are you? So, the control surfaces have to work very hard at what amounts to flying at stall speed. Result? Computer works like mad to fly the fighter in perfect steady and stability. Try looking at the rest of the aircraft and not the rear control surfaces. The result is 100% rock steady flying, but to do that the computers are fighting tiny gusts of wind that would affect how stable the fighter is. Toss in your very nose high, then it becomes a balancing act for the flight computers. So, the control surfaces are trying to do what the pilot is asking - please fly rock steady at a high angle of attack, balance most of the weight on the rear of the fighter. The pilot could NEVER react that fast, but computer controlled flight surfaces can - so computers move the wing surfaces like crazy to provide a perfect stable platform. If there was no gusting wind, then the flight control computers would not have to work so hard to keep the fighter perfect stable. So, this is the result of computers + fly by wire. They are working hard in that shot to keep the fighter balanced VERY high nose up. It not unlike you trying to balance a pencil on the end of your finger - you have to make lots of small and very fast movements. Same thing occurs in a hover - the pilot can even let go of the flight stick, and the fighter will hover EXACTLY at that current spot and location. However, if there is any gusting wind, you see the flight control surfaces and even the rear thrust control nozzle move around like crazy trying to produce a rock steady and solid hover - and one over the exact spot you were hovering over from the ground's point of view. Look VERY close at the hover video - 6:06, pay attention VERY close to HOW VERY FAST the rear nozzle is moving back and forth to create that stable hover - it near "jiggles" back and forth - and again the result of computer fly by wire.

Great video thanks 🙏🏻 Apart from the hover the F35B really does appear stodgy in terms of agility. Constant bursts of burner just to turn. About time they gave people ear radios so they can listen to the commentary and not have to listen to someone prattling on loudspeakers, you are there to hear the noise of the planes not useless information that no one really cares about. With ear pieces you have the choice of listening to the commentary or just watch and listen to the planes with out wearing your ear piece.
@pburr197310 күн бұрын
In Ben Dunnell - Cosford has one of the best airshow commentators in the business (he can be heard at Duxford, RIAT Fairford etc, he did the later Waddington shows too). If you had 'earpieces' - you'd still be listening to the same commentary, as on the loudspeakers!
