Elyse Myers has exploded into long form storytelling from a short form platform: TikTok. She tells funny and personal stories to millions of people on TikTok and Instagram and on her podcast “Funny Cuz it’s True” but doesn’t really tell stories on stage. That’s Mike’s focus today. He tries to convince Elyse to make a guest appearance on one of his new material shows and it seems like she might take him on it. Plus, discussions about balancing work and family, the time young Elyse used a penny to fake a fever, and why sometimes elevating something from good to great can ruin something good.

It just seems so natural and inevitable that these two people are in the same room together.

As a nearly 50 year old man I think it's safe to say that Elyse connects with many people who are significantly older with significantly different lives then hers. She is just so damn human that she is totally relatable.

I love Elyse's stuff. And I don't think she needs to be on stage. I don't need to see her live. Just give her a $10mil Netflix comedy special (no audience needed) that she can edit. She's an amazing editor. I kind of get the feeling thst Mike thinks what she's doing now is "not enough" not legit. He's talking about making people happy. She does that DAILY .... to millions of people. Doesn't need to do it in a room of 1,000 for 3 nights each weekend.

Finding this at end of a day filled with so much anxiety was simply priceless. I’ve adored Mike and Elyse separately, but my goodness, together in this format was stellar. Such beautiful people that bring so much love, kindness, and laughter to this thing we call life. 💞🌸

Go for it Elyse! This a DREAM intro into standup and Mike's audience's are naturally loving people who are going to be rooting for you to do well regardless! I am a huge fan of you both and just as Mike says, "What is the worst that can happen?" After EVERY humiliating experience you have conquered and shared with us, If you picture the absolute worst case scenario, it truly is not that bad. We are ALL super insecure and some people just make us feel better about it by getting up on stage and making us laugh about it. Use your gift and this amazing opportunity!!

This was great but to be honest, I was searching for “I saved my best friends life “ (I had hoped to send this to my coworker- I was doing my best to tell it to him this joke today myself but he just looked at me with a blank expression-and the more I tried to “explain “ the joke, the worse it was received by him. Then I started apologizing for not telling the joke well, and that only made things worse so, I was thinking, if you would consider telling it yourself and sending it to him, or to me for me to send to him - that would be great or maybe just some stand up advice so I can try again and do a better job. But sincerely, this was a great podcast. I wasn’t planning on listening to the whole thing and continuing on my search for “I saved my best friend’s life”, but got caught up in the conversation. So, thank you both - you were great:)

Elyse, wanted to validate the adding "and then I found $5" at the end of a story that is tanking... In my case, I would use it when I felt whoever I was talking to wasn't actually listening to me as to not waste any more of my own time ... could be in the middle of a sentence and just end the whole thing by saying "And then I found 20 dollars!" So even more exaggerated, but yeah if that ending didn't get any kind of reaction, they DEFINITELY are not listening to my ass lol Also, would not of thought of it off the top of my head, but totally agree with "Mary, did you know" as a song that moves you... The first time i heard it was at my Churches Christmas Eve service when I was a kid, sang by my pastor (he was actually a really good singer) and it just gave me goosebumps from head to toe, even at that age...The weight of the words were felt! Thanks for the dose of nostalgia!

Finding $5 is totally a thing. I find five bucks or Jesus, depending on the group I’m in, and how badly my story is bombing. 😂 This was an amazing episode. I’m a professional musician, and am totally unafraid to be on stage, but terrified of trying comedy. My friends tell me I should, but I can only be funny when there’s no pressure. This was a great window into a mindset and approach to dipping my toes in comedy.

Comedically, what is the difference between a joke and a story? The comedians I tend to watch tell stories with funny parts, I assume those to be the joke portion but from a non-comedian view point it all appears to be stories to me.
