We welcome another basket case to The Basement. Join us as we learn about the Apple eMac and pull it apart and attempt to fix!
In this episode we aim to replace the hard drive, max out the RAM, replace the PRAM battery, remove the old thermal paste, and clean decades worth of dust!!
It doesn't quite go to plan...

It's nice to see someone using an air compressor and water hose on the electronics, where appropriate. The phone call reenactment was fun and I'm glad the call hadn't come in while you were in the lavatory. 🤪

booted up an emac today after sitting for a few years, some 20 years old and still working like it did 10 years ago. Its great when 20 year old peices of equipment are still working -- especially when they have electrolytic capaciors.

Only 227 subscribers? Your videos are very well made and I’m sure that number is going to blow up very soon. I’ve seen people repurposing old iMacs by emptying them and putting modern hardware inside while keeping the exterior intact. I’d love to see a new M1 Mac mini inside an iMac g4 body. Maybe you could try a project like that. I’m sure you’ll get a ton of views and I think it’s pretty awesome. Keep the awesome work!

The eMac had a shadow mask CRT, so it was definitely not made by Sony or Mitsubishi, the only makers of aperture-grille CRTs. Because the CRT was made in Korea, according to some photos I saw, and that the CRT’s model number is similar to that used in some Philips monitors, the CRT was likely made by LG.

From everymac.com: The original eMac models and the original "Combo Drive" configuration of the eMac G4/1.0 (ATI) (M8950LL/A) are capable of booting in MacOS 9. Subsequent models are only capable of booting a version of MacOS X and running MacOS 9 applications in the "Classic" Environment provided by MacOS X 10.4.11 "Tiger" and lower ("Classic" is not supported starting with MacOS X 10.5 "Leopard").
