As you know Paul - I don't have a unimat SL (yet!) but I am enjoying the series, especially as you begin the dismantling and restoring process. I think these episodes are worth watching no matter how long they are, so please don't feel constrained by any time limits or whatnot. People without the patience to sit through a 20-30 minute video will not have the patience to restore machines, and will probably not be the target audience :-) Going great so far Paul, looking forward to the next one. Cheers, Craig

These little machines were on sale in the G.U.S. range of catalogues (littlewoods etc.) in the late 60s to mid 70s and cost about £50 If my memory serves me correctly. The were available with interest-free credit over 26 weeks and were an easy introduction to engineering for many people. I always wanted one but never did get one as my family were extremely poor. I’ve since owned several lathes of different sizes and worked for many years as a machinist/turner on very large lathes etc. Bu I will always remember the Elliott Emco unimat for stirring my interest in this profession. Great video, thanks.

Hello Tom, Many thanks for taking the time to watch my video and commenting... I remember my Mum having Littlewood catalogues so may well have been looking at the Emco's back in the 70's. I trained as a Fitter/Turner many moons ago and have just come back to this sort of work in the last couple of years. Hope to see you again. Take care. Paul,,

The power feed is unusual. Overall there’s not a lot to it, but that seems a credit to the very elegant and intelligent design. The bed casting is it’s own work of art.

Good point Tony, I thought this too. The lathe ways are only connected to the original base at either end, so I don't think having the riser feet at each end will add to or subtract from the rigidity. One approach to making it more rigid (if that's even a concern) would be to bolt it down to a "spanning beam" - torsionally stiff square tubing - as Rob/Xynudu did with his Schaublin. I don't think it will really be a concern though. Cheers, Craig

In response to your query on the paint color, when you remove the greenish surface grime you may find the color to be grey. Especially if the operators were tobacco smokers. Tobacco smoke coating makes a sort of greenish-gold cast to the original grey color. The grey hammertone paint was very popular on small German made machines in the 50s. If you can find an original sales brochure you may have the answer, provided of course that the brochure is in color. Good luck.

Hello Dennis, Many thanks for taking the time to watch and comment on this video... it is funny that you say about the colour Grey. I took one of the parts to a paint supplier and they used two different colour matching machines and both said it was grey but as it looked very green we disregarded the match... thanks for your help on this and hope to see you again soon. Take care. Paul,,

Great video, it would be an added bonus to see how you clean the components. I’m also in the process of restoring my two DB’s and I started with rubbing alcohol moved to Evapo-Rust for the parts that needed it, then finished off with mineral oil to make it shine. It was interesting that you had a hex bolt on the underside of the lathe bed. Both of mine have slotted bolts with nuts on the underside (maybe it’s a Canadian thing). On the model with the non ferrous metal I don’t have enough room to fit a socket in there and when I put pressure on the screw head I can feel and see the slot about to strip. Instead I decided to clean around the compound slide but didn’t get the results I hoped for. Big thanks 😊 🙏 for this series.

Michael, I will now include the cleaning process in a video...I have a second SL which is in a bad state of repair... I can imagine i may have similar problems that you are facing on my second one. Thanks for watching Paul,,

My Unimat also has 4 cheese head screws in counterbores through the way bars and hex nuts on the bottom inside the base. Its an American Edelstaal SL 1000. I didn't remove screws, just flowed alcohol around the ways to remove the grime.

Very interesting to see the construction of the Unimat in detail, looks like a good quality build. This is a good way to learn some design ideas for other projects. I remember this lathe being launched when I was in my late teens, I craved to have one but it's price new was way more than I could afford.

Hi Heather, Thanks for visiting... Although I said in the video I was not going to show the cleaning but your question has made me rethink that and maybe I will just do a short one on that subject. My thoughts on cleaning products were a general degreaser, followed but paint-stripper on anything that needs repainting. That aluminium a very light abrasive to polish, and any issues with the steel i may try evapo rust, but i have never used that before so will try a test piece first. Greases and lubricants, where possible i will take a lead from the Active Atom channel although they are dealing with high end lathes. Take care Paul,,
