We are trying to make haste with getting our emergency savings fully funded by the time the last day of work hits us on October 31st. Initially, we thought that $30,000 would do the trick to get us by for 6 months, but after sitting down and closely reviewing all our expenses, we learned that we needed much more than that.
In this video, we go over how we calculated our true cost for a a fully funded 6 month emergency savings. We categorized our expenses into essential and non-essential categories and we devised 3 different scenarios with 3 difference emergency savings amounts to help us see the bigger picture of what the future could look like for us.

I got laid off Oct 19,2023. I do have 2 year of emergency fund. I do have no debt. I was saving for a new car which would have been completed by end of year. In 2024 I was going to start investing.

Good video. You highlighted some good budget items that may get overlooked as in annual subscriptions that may not occur monthly. Very helpful 👌

I hate that you're going through this, but your scenarios seem solid (provided you can get to the worst-case savings amount and life throws you no more curve balls). If I had no plans to seek outside work where I had to physically go to and from, I would definitely sell any gas-powered cars. That could really boost your emergency savings. Also, you can leave your 401k at your current employer(s) even if you are laid off/let go. If you do move it, do a direct transfer to the new 401k (HR can usually help with this). I personally use Vanguard, but many people love Fidelity. Some 401k plans have specific rules so, again, check with HR to walk you through this.

Thank you for sharing this information! I think we will just end up leaving the 401k where it is until we can roll over to another one once we are able to acquire a new job.

. Are your school loans paid off? If you do, you want to knock off first before car loan.
