Hey all, it’s been a while and our debt-free journey took a sharp turn. The consumer debt is back, student loan repayment is coming back, and we just feel backwards overall. The husband got laid off which means we are about to become a 0 income household. Our life feels chaotic and we’re just trying to dig ourselves out of this mess and figure out how to survive.

It’s so nice to hear that you’ve stuck around. This is the positivity and support I came for! Thank you for your blessings, we need all we can get. ❤️🥰

Things happen. My husband got laid off early in our marriage. It’s hustle mode season. I know you can do it. I would also really make a plan to not go back into debt once you are done with this debt. Just keep swimming.

I say this with both urgency and kindness , that is a gigantic car loan. Get rid of it. I imagine the amount that would put back into your budget would help a great deal. Finance something small. Cars are luxury items and a total money sink. Even financing something small and basic would make much more sense. I can’t imagine pausing retirement, which is your future, but not getting rid of the almost $50,000 car.

I too was a bit shocked at that number. Falling off the wagon for me started by getting my paid off car side swiped and totaled. Since I’d hit probably 4 deer with it after moving to the country and being pulled from the ditch too many times to count, I knew I needed 4 wheel drive, living and commuting in Wisconsin. After insurance on my Sonic, my Jeep loan is 19k which I plan on refinancing someday when rates drop (if that ever happens).

I can't relate at all. I went and listened to your, "Why I Quit My Six-Figure Tech Job" before posting. You were paid well and with that, someone isn't patting you on the back every moment. With some basic discipline, you could have paid off all your debt and owned a house free and clear. You really sound pretty lazy. Consider the salary your husband use to make and only live on that amount once you both have full-time jobs again. You could also have enough socked away for a college fund for your own children. Delayed gratification is your friend. NOTHING is as sweet as financial freedom. I was able to quit work permanently in my 50s. I'll never have to work again but I busted my butt for decades. With two good incomes, you could do it as well. Make friends outside of work for your deep friendships. For me, it was with the grind.

Hey Rebecca, thanks for watching my videos. You made some valid points about financial freedom. Our debt free journeys are definitely personal and unique in their own ways. On mine, I admit a lot of mistakes were made along the way, but it’s all part of the growth. It’s a very personal choice to quit and one that I wouldn’t recommend for everyone. I just want to prioritize taking care of my health and start a family. For me that’s priceless. Even after quitting, I still managed to put away $45k towards my goddaughter and her brother’s 529 plan so I wasn’t completely lazy. Kudos to you for an early retirement, it’s definitely not something everyone achieves. It’s something I would’ve wished for my own parents.

Thank you, we are grateful for some time before the cutoff. I know others weren't as lucky at his company. I quit awhile back due to stress and health reasons (fertility and liver issues). Just needed to give myself some TLC. I go more into that in another video if you're curious kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hZ6na6pzqtW8c4E.html. No regrets about it, just regret not managing my money better.

I stumbled upon your channel, and I wanted to say this. Regarding student loan forgiveness for everyone, the chance for it to ever happen is extremely slim to none. I do not mean to say this to discourage you or to make you feel worse. But it makes me very sad that so many people have been giving false hope. I hope your situation will get better. Hope you husband will get a job soon. Stay strong you will get through it.

Severance does impact eligibility for unemployment in the state of GA. Your husband should be able to draw the maximum benefit of $365/wk but it may be delayed due to him receiving severance. Call and check into that if he doesn't find another job by October! Does he contribute to an HSA at work via payroll deduction? You can reduce your employee contribution due to emergency situation--talk to HR. Lastly, the new car may have to go. See what it is worth online and sell (private sale because you'll get more) it if you're not underwater on it. Then go down to a one-car family or buy something used for about $12,000 or so. Sorry you have found yourselves in this position. Door Dash, Target, and other places need workers and pay decent. Good luck ❤!

That's good information to know about the severance. Thank you for sharing that knowledge. We did consider reducing our HSA contributions, but my medical bills have been pretty high and that HSA fund has been a big help. We figured it was best to max that out for as long as we can.

There wasn’t much logical reason to it. It was overindulging and not being prepared for large home repair expenses. But it’s another valuable lesson learned and if it wasn’t for this layoff we would’ve kept delaying funding our emergency fund.
