Great video. I wish I could find someone who would remove my 2ZZ from my Celica as I have a leak from the timing cover and no one seems to want to touch it. However, with all the work you did, I am surprised you never checked and cleaned the VVTL-I solenoid and replaced both the VVt and VVTL-i small filters. The VVTL-i filter/solenoid sometimes block up and prevent lift engaging. Always buy the new designed lift bolts post 2002/3 as the early ones had a habit of snapping like yours.

NICE work! Especially liked your prep, cleanliness, and painting. Working through same issues on my 2ZZ and also had broken rocker-shaft bolt. I pounded shaft from wrong end and damaged end seal (at cam drive side) resulting in needing to order new rocker shaft....Grrr. Lucky for me, I live close to Monkey Wrench Racing and they helped me fix my errors. Have you addressed valve lash? I have completed full tear-down to block, now in assembly phase, and valve lash is odd in service manual. Think I'm going back to Monkey Wrench as I am running out of time for Spring-2019 install in my MR2/S. P

Very nice job guys! Your 2ZZ looks kinda beat with that dented intake manifold and broken belt tensioner thing in the back. I feel lucky that my 2ZZ motor set came in spotless! I did pay $200 more for my motor than most importers were asking but the importer was super reputable with TONS of 2ZZ’s not just 4-5 of them, so I felt their experience with selecting engines was good. I was right, my mechanic did the swap 2 years ago and nothing but joy from my 03 XRS ever since! Great luck with the motor!!,

So let's say I go to replace lift bolts and one is broken like this....can I just replace the unbroken one and screw the broken bolt back in and pretend I never saw it? Lol. Car currently hits lift....was gonna change the filters and lift bolts just as a maintenance thing (200K) matrix xrs

After complaints toyota corrected the type of material lift bolts in the younger 2zzge engines

Why not use a left handed bit till it catches?i have use it in broken bmw frame bolts it should work

Toyota fucked up when making this timing cover. Why would they incorporate a water pump coolant passage through the timing cover. That's just asking for it when this engine isn't serviced correctly.
