This is a great scene because it shows how far Emma has come as a character. She no longer looks down on Mr. Martin because of his station but has the goodness to address him as an equal (wearing plain clothes as not to put him on the spot) and even offers him some food and a picture of his unrequited love.

and not just any food but a beautiful goose to be exact. She remembers what Harriett told her at their first meeting about how Mr. Martin's mother had gifted Mrs. Goddard (Harriet's boarding school principle - her following caretaker) 'the most beautiful goose she's ever seen'. Love the details!

Literally rewatched this scene so many times. The way Robert Martin looks at Harriet as she’s running toward him, the way he smiles at her sweet,playful nature, how he gently pushes her against the wall, and then respectfully removes his hat to give her a tender kiss. It’s probably u favourite kiss scene ever.

Wow and Harriett found her father too. I liked how she shared that information with her head held very high almost like "I dare you to say something negative about this" to Emma. I loved the assurance that Emma didn't care that Harriet was confirmed to have a father of low social status. She invited Harriet and her father over and demonstrated that she loved Harriet as a friend and wouldn't drop her even though she did something Emma had advised against and wasn't, in fact, a gentleman's daughter.
@shinjineesen400

@Darshana Ambulkar Emma does attend their wedding in the book. Their friendship may cool in the future. But that is because both women are married, Harriet's husband lives on the Donwell Abbey estate while Emma remains at Hartfield, and finally Mr Robert Martin is one of Mr Knightley's tenants. In class conscious England, the wife of a tenant farmer, even a prosperous one, was not and could not be friends with the lady of the estate. The exception was if they were family.

I adore how this version makes Emma work to make things right for Harriet, instead of things just getting fixed by circumstance and how it shows us that her friendship was true and won’t dwindle after her engagement to me martin. It was my only gripe with the book how it ends with their friendships dissolved. I understand how the book it’s aware about how class would ultimately separate them, and how it shows that Emma just took Harriet out of her station to “improve her” but learns to accept to let her be as she is. But like class be dammed I think Emma defying it in the name of friendship shows much more growth of character. I just prefer the ending where they keep being friends

I agree, of the recent film versions, this Harriet is by far the best. The screenplay and direction give her more scope too, so we can enjoy and appreciate her character more. Importantly, she also manages to look convincing as a 17-year-old, which most of the other Harriets do not. BTW there is a great Harriet in the 1972 BBC series. The series is very flawed but the Harriet there fangirls Emma in a way that I feel is closer to the book than any other.

At the time, meat was expensive so gifting a goose would have been a significant gesture. Also, being a tradesperson (like someone who makes galoshes / rubber boots) was a lower social standing than being from a land-owning family. Harriet is worried that Emma will reject her and her father because he’s not a “gentleman”. Emma’s gracious response is a relief to Harriet and shows how Emma has grown as a person. Agreed, the meanings are a bit hard to grasp without understanding the social context!
