Oh how funny! I really needed this 3 weeks ago. I went a little over board and purchased 34 Winsor and Newton Cotman colors! I just couldn't stop myself. Every color looked so beautiful and I just had to have it :) Well, now... I have a palette like the one you are using which holds 28 colors. I had to pick 6 colors to put into a smaller palette, so I choose the browns. I think I will be moving them all around as I find my "go to colors". I made a color swatch chart and have noticed that several of the colors are very close to each other. You are so right!!! I didn't need all of these colors. Emma, you are such a delight and joy to watch. Thanks for sharing your talent, time and knowledge with us. I started painting at age 65 in Dec. 2020 after watching one of your videos. Painting (but not very good at it) helps with my anxiety and I find peace in watching the colors do their thing on the paper. Love and best wishes ~ Grammy in Utah

Just love seeing your bright face again! Important to rest though... I'm happy you're feeling better today. I'm a beginner at 68 and have enjoyed 'playing' with my colors. However, when I attempt a flower... I keep adding until it's not looking like a flower. For now, I need to only paint with a tutorial playing and pausing it. I was lucky enough to get the primary tube set from Daniel smith for Christmas but I have found you really just need those 6 colors to mix things. However I will say once you have used the better paints it is so hard to go back to a palette that has lesser grade paint lol

A Few Tips- I have just about finished building my pallette and found the process so much fun and I am happy with it!....1- From my very very cheap set, I took note of which colors I always reached for. 2- I researched and compared colors with all the artist I followed...if multiple artist used the same...that was "bingo". 3- I purchased the WN Dot Sampler Card and played with the colors - totally worth the $15!!!! 4 - I have a few colors that are more meant for mixing than straight use( i.e. perm & opera pink...I am not a pink girl, but they make beautifull other colors I love). 5 - Enjoy the process - this your personal style ♥

Try mixing your green gold with phtalo green (or even your phtalo turquoise). You will never need sap green again. I admire you for having so few colors and doing so much. 🤪 I have buckets of tubes and so many palettes, yet I use them so little. Love your color mixing videos. I'm a little bit of a color nerd.

I really liked this! I've been working gradually on my Winsor and Newton professional watercolors, and found that aqua, transparent yellow, and permanent rose produce a lot of bright, clean colors. Then I went overboard on other colors! I fell in love with this medium.

This was very helpful, I am a beginner and wish I had have watched your video before buying every color from 3 different brands, it was so hard to resist buying them but now realize I could have started with 3-6 colors and learned so much about paint mixing. Im suprised you would add a cadmium for mixing with it being opaque. I think the second to last colour you were unsure of is Perylene maroon, great for skin tones lips etc . My limited palette would be Winsor Blue - Green shade Perment Rose Transparent Yellow (this colour glows) With those 3 you get beautiful purples and oranges For a six palette my other 3 would be French Untramarine Winsor Red Winsor Yellow deep My extras would be Phthalo Turquoise Green Gold (great for leaves and stems) Ultramarine Violet (great for shadow) Colbalt turquoise light Burnt Sienna Paynes Grey (works as a neutral tint too)

If you paint in a style that doesn't need glazes or layering it's fine. But if you use the glazing technique to build layers for depth, avoid opaque colors. The pigment floats up too easily and makes mud. I would use Quinacridone Magenta pr122. Without the added dyes it's very good light-fastness.

I totally went to Blick and bought some of your recommended and did Cotman, Permanent rose, hookers Green dark, cadmium red deep, diox. purple and then I added Paynes gray!

I was taught never use black only paynes grey and I love indigo also a Sapp green ..I have a student grade palet to practice with before I use my expensive paints. Great video Thank you I think it you're just starting out just have fun don't stress about mixing colour different teachers teach different ways to paint, I once had a teacher who never mixed paint she said the hard work had been done for us ,but you find your own style and the colours you like to use best x ☺ 🇬🇧

Ah, thank you for this! I have the Mungyo pan set, and it’s great, but I’m beginning to build my collection of tube watercolors to make my own pallet, and was feeling very overwhelmed by the huge assortment of colors to choose from. You made it so clear and easy to grasp.

Quinacridone gold( which is burnt orange and nickel azo yellow) plus phalogreen is a lovely one. And deep cobalt turquoise with Hansa yellow deep is granulating and a beauty.

I would mess around with the cobalt turquoise, I really love it. Even splurged on the pro tube because they didn't have it in cotman. I did a really cool sunflower painting using that as my blue for mixing greens and full on as my background. Sadly I never got around to finishing the painting, there are several sunflowers and half a vase awaiting some details that may never come.

Deep cobalt turquoise makes gorgeous greens and the light one too. I mix mine with Hansa yellow deep or a yellow with a bit of orange. There is a completely transparent Phaloturquoise or as Daniel Smith calls it phaloblue turquoise the is PB16.Maybe you wonder why I brought it up? Cerulean blue has no non granulating counterpart, now it does. I don’t want granulation in my sky. The PB16 with a very small amount of phaloblue gs watered way down gives that lower sky green blue with no granulation. Also it is the closest to the primary Cyan and mixes awesome greens and it’s perfect compliment is scarlet pyrol. I can mix a light cobalt with Naples and PB16, natural green with quinacridone gold and a raw umber makes a forestry green. It is beautiful.

I was going to ask whether what you tend to paint will dictate the best colours for your palette. I live in Australia, so the blues and greens in nature are different to those in an English landscape (as an example) and I'd imagine a botanical painter might want different shades to an animal or bird painter. And you sort of said this at around 17 minutes. Great tips and advice.

since I am more collecting than using colours (my corona therapy 😉).. and wanted to try out professional paint I started searching on second hand websites. There are often very good offers of sets or tubs never used or used very rarely... In this way I do get the opportunity to try out the colors and decide for my self if they are worth the 💲 Great Video Emma 😘

@@katriannam Sorry I don't have any recommendations for you 😔 I life in Switzerland 🇨🇭 and I usually browse on local secondhand online shops or auction shops (small private vendors). An other great option is to buy 1/4 pans from etsy vendors. I love the selection that Hazel from WaterColorHoarder has. She carries all the big brands... And I love to try out new colors before committing to a entire tube/pan. Hope this helps 😉

"now that it's fall" ... ::cries in texas:: I love the approach you have to getting started. The consistent reassurance that you can mix a broad range of colors with a limited palette has really helped me. Thanks to anxiety & ADHD, I have a tendency to get obsessive about new hobbies. My brain likes to tell me I'll be so much better if I just buy the next or more expensive thing. Anyways, always happy to see a video from you! I hope you're on the mend and taking plenty of time to rest. Your voice does sound less congested than in the past couple videos.

Hullo Emma, I would NEVER tell anyone to get an Opera color the colors simply do not last and the fade is seriously bad! ALL of the dye based or Neon colors do so. I did notice that it was not in your list of recommended colors. I have always mixed my grey and blacks, but have found in recent years that a neutral tint makes this so much easier! I guess I am getting tired in my old age. I mix my greens more often than not, yet I agree SAP Green is a good one to get first! Better to add another yellow than a green! I will also say that if your in the USA DaVinci paints of California has superior professional grade paints and at way less cost than DS!

I like Cotman too. Mind you I am currently comparing the colours like Sap green to the Daniel Smith sample cards and an upgrade is tempting. 😊 I LOVE Alizerin Crimson as I found that you can mix it with various yellows to get lovely peachy tones. 😊

Great video... I just bought the same big palette (was only $8 surprisingly) and pretty much all the Cotmans and have been watching your videos feverishly for the last 2 weeks straight, over and over. I know you have the Professionals now but they’re just too expensive in NZ (30-50 a tube, yeah, nah, not yet, Cotman are bad enuf at $11 but I managed to find the 20 set cheap and someone destashing another 13 almost unused tubes for half price), so I’m so excited. I squeezed them out last night .... I did your limited choice from your other videos into a small tin palette (I prefer to say restricted tho, haha) and the big palette has them all ....got them dried overnight and now I’m ready to go! (I do actually have heaps of other watercolours I’ve collected in the last 3 months too (Meiliang Pretty Excellent, Mungyo, Reeves, etc) but Meh, I’ll stick with Cotman and do your tutes!) ❤️ P.S. Oh I think that red color that you mentioned you don't like at the end might be "Indian Red" or PR101, that's an opaque color for sure. Hope you feel better soon girl!💗💗💗

I have a few earthy colors on my palettes, not that I couldn't mix them. I have them not only for convenience on the palette so that I do not have to mix them myself, especially because they are often among the cheapest colours and I can save a little money. Furthermore, I often had to chose between price, practicability and availability. I once had a phase where I only had Prussian blue and cobalt blue dark as blues, The others were sold out when the offer was on and the other manufacturers were too expensive for the assumed quality and I didn't have that much money to buy expensive colours at normal prices. It was an interesting experience, I had tried to compensate with a few more red and pink shades than planned. If all colours cost the same amount, my palette might look different and would have a little less colours.

lemon yellow is great for some mixes. although my alternative for it is pure yellow by schmincke or kadmium lemon yellow by rembrandt. some mixes just are better with this kind of yellow than a warm one. I guess in regard to greens in landscapes, it for sure depends on your surrounding. if trees in your surrounding can be partly brighter in the green tone or nort

The thing I have battled with having a limited palette versus having convenience colors that I often use.... is with always having to mix purples or greens or neutrals: from a cost perspective, how much do you end up saving if you’re always having to mix and use a lot of blue and yellow to get the green? Do you end up going through the essential primary colors much more quickly from always using them? I do agree that learning how to mix the colors is so useful and it’s so helpful to be able to create confidently any color ... from a cost perspective if there’s secondary and tertiary colors that get used really often is it maybe more cost effective to purchase them?

No not really. I am an artist and do both. I mix my greens but I buy tubes and usually the 15ml ones. One doesn’t burn through the paint as much as one thinks. There might be a couple of standbys but it is normal and not excessive unless I start painting the walls. It really teaches how to mix, that purple isn’t necessary on the palette and much more beautiful greens can be made. Of course one would need to know the compliments but our own eyes can be easily fooled as long as the value ( light or darkness) of an area is understood. That is where the saying “you can murder the color if you know it’s value “ came from. Really these days we are bombarded by commercialism and needing when we have. If you ever get a chance to visit NY Metropolitan Smithsonian art specifically women’s watercolor paintings from long ago, they were experts you would love it.

I wasted so much Winsor Newton Permanent Rose mixing it with yellow to get a Coral color ... after 3 months I just bought Daniel Smith Quinacridone Coral and I ❤ love it. Being a beginner, I have several Magenta colors ... some different pigment numbers... I bought those before I bought watercolor dot cards with the actual paint on them to swatch test! Love ❤ Emma! I do lots of landscape painting & my single most used color is sap green. I love “what colors should you have” videos but it largely depends on what you paint: if you paint lots of landscapes you should have sap green & burnt umber in addition to your primaries, if you do more illustration or abstract you probably want more punchy colors.

The Winser & Newton pigment I love most that doesn't match any other brand using the same pigment, is PR188, Scarlet Lake. The warmest transparent red, Mixes the best oranges. Permanent Rose with Phthalo Turquoise in my estimation won't give you that beautiful purple or violets if purple is important to you. It's because Phthalocyanine Turquoise PB16, even though listed as a blue pigment, has a hue angle of 217, making it closer to green than blue, on the color wheel. The shorter the color wavelength, the cooler the color. Believe it or not, violet has the shortest wavelength according to science. Red the longest.

@@EmmaLefebvre my memory isn’t that good. I’ll need to keep a cheat sheet to keep track of the 6 new tubes of paint I just bought to complement my half-pan set. All that talk about that pink and purple and Payne’s grey. Of course, I had to buy them and two shades of black just to see what they are like. I *already* can’t remember what colour the 6th one is.

Don't feel bad. I had not worn any makeup during the entire time of the pandemic until I got my shot. I three some eyeliner on and that was it! Hope you feel better. Now on to the discussion, which I enjoy all of your videos on your channel. You should see all the paints of different brands that I have. I even have Holbein....about ten tubes and many costly paints and I probably will not want use all of them. But I have been collecting them for a few years. But all are professional brands.

Cobalt turquoise is excellent for mixing interesting purplish greys if you use magenta leaning paints with it, like perm rose or quinacridone pinks. Also great for various other colour mixes and effects, can either brighten things up or tone it done as necessary. Don't know about WN, (which i think is a PB50), but in some other brands it's also a granulating colour. Mine is PB28 White Nights and granulating. I don't use it frequently in its pure form, but my palette is not complete without it, cobalt turquoise is a very versatile lightfast single pigment colour and a must have for my style of work.

@@katriannam cobalt pigments can have different shades, varying from yellow to red and from blue to green. I'm talking about the green leaning PB28, which a lot of brands call "turquoise" or "teal" or "aqua", it's similar to PG50. See "Cobalt Turquoise" by Rembrandt & Holbein or "Cobalt Teal" by MGraham on PB28 for instance.

I bought single pans (jaxon) and I love them,they aren't expensive(1,19€) and you can build a little set with good quality colors to begin with😊 I tried a cadmium red and cyan blue from winsor and newton and I hated them,they aren't really pigmented and were expensive☹

FYI: Windsor Newton rewet easier if you add a drop of glycerine to palette well (and mix in). Or use eg Daniel Smith, M Graham, etc.

Really interesting. I don’t like opera rose either. I suppose it depends on what you want to achieve. I started with a pan set of Koi paints and I still use them. I’m not ever going to be a professional artist so I haven’t yet bought any tubes. However, I’m leaving towards getting some permanent rose!

Opera Rose and Alizarin Crimson are fugitive colors....which means they will fade when exposed to environmental conditions such as sunlight, humidity and temperature. They make a Permanent Alizarin Crimson which is not fugitive. I always buy that one now. Just in case you did not know. I am a floral painter so I love both of these colors.

Cadmium red is the primary red. As is ultramarine blue. Just add cadmium yellow. Here’s the thing. You need the violet from the rainbow spectrum. So alizarin crimson plus ultramarine. Burnt umber and Payne’s grey for the darks.

@@alvirosy it is just so artists don’t get them confused. Technically the non lightfast or fugitive alizarin crimson is more beautiful but it fades. Most now come from quinacridone violet. Some artists still prefer the fugitive one.

When I started I bought a basic set and then started buying a tube each week. Now I have a lot of colors. And different brands too because I would buy them for my birthday/Christmas etc. I am really surprised because your colors are quite a bit different than mine. 😁 I paint flowers and landscapes mostly. Buildings and trees too. I don’t use alizarin crimson because it is so fugitive. Opera pink is too. I love it but only use it in my sketchbooks.

ok, I am a beginner, but in regard to orange, I can give you a great recommendation. a transparent orange, that looks so nice on it's own, but is even more great to use in mixes. esp. greens. I bet, this kind of paint exists in different brands, but the one I know is by schmincke. It's called transparent orange (lasur orange). it was recommended from an pro artist, who teaches master classes and beginners classes - it's better, than with ready mixed greens (although I will get me a perylen green). and it works fine to warm up a scene and such.

How long do you find any given tube of watercolor lasts you? How long does it take you to go through a 5ml tube, vs a 7mL tube, or a larger 15mL tube? (All with the assumption one squeezes paint out and lets it dry in their respective paint palettes before use…)

Great video Emma! Here's my question (off topic) I really love your style of loose florals and I REALLY want to learn how to do it myself however I'm having trouble... letting go? I guess. As in, when I try to paint loose florals, I find myself over thinking it and trying to add too many details. I just get frustrated and end up over working it or not even finishing a piece because of it.

I had the same exact problems. I'm actually an acrylic artist that started dabbling in watercolor about a year and a half ago. Watercolor has actually helped me to get looser with my acrylics painting. I have to say.....after a year and a half, I have just recently began producing pleasing florals. It's practice practice practice. I practice daily. Sometimes just 30 min sometimes for hours. I have stacks of floral filled paper! Lol it's nice seeing the improvement so I even keep the uglies from when I started. It's muscle memory. I guarantee if you keep practicing, you will see the improvement over time. Just find a groove that works for you, and keep experimenting with what feels right and natural to you. God bless and enjoy the process. ;)

Here's an idea, try a bigger brush! Seriously, it will fill up the page more (So you're more likely to feel "finished" before you overwork it), AND a bigger brush means fewer details :) It also helps if it's a softer brush too (like synthetic squirrel hair)

Many of the pinks and rose colors are derived from a mother pigment which is quinacridone violet. So although a color itself it is used to make others. But in a quick pinch if you have an ultramarine or phaloblue red shade and a neutral red you can get it to look more pink by adding a little of that blue and mix. Keep checking a very light swatch and adjusting. It won’t be that bright permanent rose color but with value contrasts our eyes will perceive it as pink.

There is always a professional Dioxazine Purple but some brands like Daniel Smith calls it Carbozole Violet. Same pigment though.

Your choices would depend on your goals for the children and the ages of the children. Crayola and Prang make good sets. I have used other brands, too, with children. I would buy the cake/pan sets. The children (elementary school age and younger) like to have a lot of colors.

I am like you lazy, so I bought the ones I wanted of EBay, people buy and then give up and you can get them cheaper…. I just bought 20 mixed cotman and professional paint pants for £10.20 plus shipping of £3,50 so it’s worth checking eBay as well… I was treated to some Holbein paints.. all I have done is swatch them. I saw a pallet on eBay called seami art they looked so much like Holbein I bid on them and won them… they are not a true half pallet but there are 50 colours I got them for £3.70 plus shipping… I have swatched them and the Holbeins I have match them perfectly… so sometimes it’s just surprises me what’s out there. I am a beginner taught on line by people like Emma not ready to use anything but cotman yet but now I have them for later…

Why cadmiums? They’re ubiquitous among watercolorist. I own a 24 pan from Daniel Smith but none are cadmiums. I can buy them if I’m missing something important to paint :)

I have a cad scarlet red because I mix my skies wet first adding yellow ochre then scarlet cad then when I add cobalt blue the cad scarlet helps grey it down. Their opacity can be worked with that way mixing on the paper and it is much more vibrant than mixing it in a palette.

Cadmium is your primary yellow, and is your warm counterpart to lemon yellow. Cadmium red medium is classic fire engine red. It's more opaque. So when paint with it, it will come forward in your painting.
