When it comes to light fastness are these paints reliable? I see that they use 1,2 and 3 star ratings but what does this calculate in terms of years?

Quinacridone violet is definitely going to get more use than your old ultramarine violet. I feel that pinky magenta undertone will make some gorgeous mixes for florals!! 💐🌷

I love the different ways you say Quinacridone, I saw someone comment the last video but the way to say it if you still can’t get it is; quinn (Harley quinn) ack (like saying hack without the h) kra (like saying crawl except just cra) done (like saying dome but with an n)

I looked up how to pronounce quinacridone. I found two different pronunciations. The way you said was one, and the way another person on here who replied how to pronounce it was the second version. I pronounce it the second way.

You probably won’t see this but if you’re trying to get rid of your toxic colors and the reason you won’t add cobalt to your pallet cerulean blue is made with a cobalt pigment, unless mai mary blue doesn’t use the cobalt pigment for their cerulean and they use a mix to get the hue of the color

@@karakarinstearns441 I get what you are saying, but there's an issue you may not be aware of. Allergic reactions to the chemicals found in most watercolors, inhaling them. I wear gloves. I have Mast Cell disease and can't paint with anything but Maimeri Blu. Any other brand causes anaphylaxis, that's not a phantom fear for me but life threatening. This brand is the only reason why I can paint watercolors again. Whatever the difference is in this brand it is dramatic for some of us. It's nice to have someone share this info, I just bought mine and started painting watercolors again in August.

You can also rub a bar of soap on the plastic palette and rinse off. Works great for beading

Maimeri Blu is my favorite watercolors. I'm allergic to other brands but not Maimeri Blu. I'm so excited to paint with watercolors again! The colors are rich and beautiful too.

I appreciate this insight. Masters Touch Acrylics (which I have used for years) started triggering my asthma, so I am in search of another acrylic brand that does not. I am trying watercolors now and I am going to try this brand to see how I react. If you have any insights into acrylics brands that are less triggering I would appreciate it.

@@zaarteestdanaportiermorvan2453 I do best with Liquitex Acrylics and I never use the toxic colors like the Cadiums. I also have a box fan with a merv 13 filter attached, great air filter for an art studio.

As I run out of my Winsor & Newton colors, I am going to make the switch. Thanks for your insight on this! So excited to get more of their colors. The small palette I have from them is rich in saturation, so I feel like their shades last longer.

Ok, not trying to be argumentative or a smart-ass, but isn't gum Arabic made from the sap of Acacia trees? And sand??? Are you saying the MaimeriBlu paints use sand (in some form) as a thickening agent? 🤔

I have some MaimeriBlu and I really like it. Master Watercolor artist "Sterling Edwards,' swears by it. I also have M Graham that's totally non- toxic, Made with Pure Pigment, Gum Arabic & a touch on honey. DaVinci Watercolor only uses Pigment, Gum Arabic and a touch of vegetable Glycerin. Both American made.

Hullo Jenna, i’m not sure I’ve ever heard about this glue stick method I have always just used toothpaste or a green scrubber to clean any plastic surface to avoid beading and you have a very nice palette. And I know there are lots of ways to pronounce words more often using others, but you should use what makes you most comfortable I hope you have a lovely day and I look forward to seeing you paint some from your new palette.

That palette is dreamy, I enjoyed learning what you liked about each colour and why you chose it. I'm taking notes for when I eventually upgrade so this was super helpful. Do you not seperate them warm/cold like you do on that travel palette? And why not?

I ended up ordering 10 of the MaimeriBlu colors after your swatching video :D I know I said I wouldn't buuuut...I did. They're sooooooo beautiful! Just waiting on some new brushes I wanted to try that were on sale from Jerry's called Mimik Synthetic Kolinsky Sable brushes. I mean a pack of 9 rounds for $45 when they're regularly like $157 or something? Couldn't resist that one...Maybe I'll actually paint tonight! Been a few weeks.

Maimeri Blu Cerulean is "Ossidi di cobalto alluminio e cromo - PB36 - 77343 - Inorganic" So, yes, definitely cobalt.

You're the first person I met who uses so many MeimeriBlue (do you realize you didn't give the name of the product anywhere in your descriptions -- guessing at the spelling). Love hearing about these paints and I noticed that the majority of the paints you chose are transparent. I aim to use those primarily too. I want that Dragon's Blood too 😄!

Also, your Everyday Watercolor book arrived this week. Looks super awesome and I will be working through it meticulously. Do you organize each color according to warmth? So warmest blue, warm blue, cool blue, coolest blue. I have Daniel Smith and they’re categorized warmest, warm, cool, coolest. Just wondering how meticulous I should be given the likelihood pans next to each other might get a bit of each/cross contamination from everyday use. Thanks!

In my research on this subject I found that nearly all warnings about the toxicity of watercolors relates to “ inhalation or ingestion” of the medium. Unless you are extremely careless in working with watercolors, i. e., eating a sandwich with paint on your hands, it is highly unlikely to be harmful. Inhaling a liquid is not even a worry. However, I personally would not work with powdered pigments without a mask.

I love your new pallet. I need something like that. Oh Quinacridone is not an Italian name. It's the name of the dye they use to make it. It's pronounced: Quin-ack-re-done no ne' at the end. The dye is made from a plant so it shouldn't be dangerous like cadmium. Quinacridone Burnt Orange has been discontinued, which we've found several colors you can mix that is so stinking close too. Hope that helps and enjoy your new pallet. If you can sell those, plz do. :)

Jenna, any suggestions to help remember which colors are warm & cool on the palette? I recently learned about EACH color having a warm/cool leaning! Never knew about warm blues & cool yellows! It's overwhelming to keep straight!

Hey, I'm no Jenna but I think i can help :) Try remembering that the hottest of colours will probably be orange/orange leaning red and the coolest color will be blue/blue leaning turquoise. Then look at the color you got (for example yellow) and where it would be on the colour wheel comparing to those two reference points. If the yellow is closer to it's Orange neighbour - it will be warm yellow. If instead it looks like it's closer to green hue - it will be cool yellow. Same with purple - if it's closer in neighbourhood with red - that means it's warm, if it's closer to blue - it's cool. If blue you have is straying away from it's turquise/greenshish tones then it will be warm blue. Cool red on the other hand will be straying away from orange - towards purple and pinks. I hope it helps!

Your palette is beautiful but there are a few facts we need to get straight. First of all.. Gum Arabic made out of sand? Where did you get that from? We can agree that it's totally from a natural source, which is really the essence here, but let's please agree that there's no sand involved. You mention that you left out Phthalo Blue because it's toxic. To the best of my knowledge, this is not true. However, you do use Cerulean Sky Blue, which is PB35 which is a cobalt pigment and therefore toxic. Other than that I really enjoyed the video. The brand is new to me but seems like something I need to take a closer look at. Thanks for introducing the brand to me. :)

@@JennaRaineyChannel gum arabic is the sap from certain trees. there are definitely synthetic ones however you absolutely cannot make sand into something different. you can melt it and make glass, or use it in many other ways like as an additive, but you cannot change one thing to a totally new thing. perhaps there was a translation or communication mistake/misunderstanding? i know you really always do your best to give accurate info! I'm hoping you can ask them to clarify since people seem interested. and if they are doing some kind of high tech science to somehow turn sand into a substitue for the gum arabic, that would surely involve a high amount of chemicals!

I know that gum arabic is water soluble and I know that sand is insoluble. They are two different things and one is not made from the other. I checked the Maimeri website and they list gum arabic and pigment as the only ingredients in their paints. Powdered pigments can appear somewhat "sandy" before they are milled to a fine mesh size, and they are insoluble so guessing that is what is meant? I do not know! The only connection between gum arabic and sand that I found while researching online is that the two are used to create a composite binder in core production for moulds and in metallurgy. Love this video and the one with the swatching too. On a funny note, I am picking up Jenna's pronunciation of Quinacridone from hearing her attempt to say it in her "italian" accent and now I have to think twice to say it the right way! I am drooling over that paint like crazy!!!

Just want to say that in the past, Maimeri Blue has not always been forthcoming about the truth of their paint. I've been using many brands of watercolor for a lot of years, studied pigments their codes where they come from and how watercolor is made and what simply will not work and what does. People who hand make their own know that gum arabic and pigment alone does not work well. Which is why a humectant like glycerin, or honey or corn syrup is used. The more gum arabic used the slower the flow of pigment dispersion in water and its also extremely hard to rewet once dry. Ox gall or synthetic version, or the absence of Gum Arabic for a synthetic version like Aquazol makes it flow quickly when touched with water. Maimeri watercolor paint simply explodes when the paint touches the water that tells me its not just gum arabic and pigment. I'm 70 now and according to lab paint annalists, Maimeri Blu's claims do not add up as usual. Also the fact that my new PB36 creates bubbles! I'm not the only one this is happening to. That should tell you there is a dispersant of some kind added. Gum arabic doesn't turn soapy when water is added. However, their new formula is better than the last one.

You can buy each one individually. Plus, yes they're pricy but they're big tubes and will last you a very long time. Just get the red, blue and yellow and then you can mix to make other colors.

When you’re handling paint everyday...breathing in any potentially carcinogenic pigments or binders over a ten year career could pose serious health risks. This is why i totally respect your decision to change up your supplies after a decade 🎨 Jenna, at the end of the day art is a singular activity, it’s just you and your paintbrush 🖌 so you have to decide what works for you 🙏 👍

Another KZfaqr said that MaimariBlu paints contain ox gall, which is sourced from oxen from Congo. Congo has been a conflict zone for many years. Anyone have an update on the ox gall?

Online they seem to be listed as a generally vegan brand of paint (except for the colors which contain PBk9 which is bone black), which would mean that they do not contain ox gall, and i don’t see any information on their official website that would point to that they use ox gall in their paints (though they do offer ox gall in seperate 75ml bottles) Hope this helps :)

a bonus of watercolour paint is that you let the paints dry on your palette before using, and the reactivate it with water. You will save a lot of paint by letting them dry first (usually about 24hrs) instead of using them wet right out of the tube. You can continually use the paint on your palette by adding water and letting dry between sessions, until you have used up your whole pile of pigment. Just squeeze out a new dab, let dry and start again!

You can use a plastic deviled egg platter from Dollar Tree at Easter Time. Just rub with toothpaste and wash it off and dry it before adding the paint. Also, white ceramic dishes such as platters and paints were great for palettes.

Fugitive in this case means colors that aren't lightfast. An example is Opera Rose.

It’s a word to describe the lasting strength of the colour. so in direct sunlight, fugitive colours will fade over time in direct sunlight, and sometimes the colour will disappear completely, depending on the level of fugitive. They are not bad paints , they are merely not ideal for original work you intend to sell, because the artwork is most likely to be displayed, and you want the painting to last if you intend to sell it. If it’s for sketchbook use or for scanning and making prints, then it is fine.

Also breaking in cracking isnt a quality that is tied to lightfastness but the relationship between pigment, binder and surface. This is the first time i ever heard anyone tie lightfastness with cracking....?

I too would love to know more about this. I'm guessing it's made from sap that drips from the acacia trees onto the sand beneath, and the sand gathered to collect the sap. Acacia trees are quite valuable, not only for commercial purposes, but also as an important environmental force in keeping the habitat from becoming pure desert. So if one can collect the sap without harming the trees, that sounds like a good thing.

Did Maimeri-blu send you all 90?!!! I just discovered these a few weeks ago, and haven't had a moment to open them. I bought about 15. Regarding the beading - on metal palettes, a Magic Eraser helps. Might do the same on plastic.

Studio Six in Toronto, Ontario carries Maimeri Blu watercolour. They used to have a brick & mortar store but are now exclusively online.

I’m really surprised that your favorite color is the Green Gold as it is made with Copper (heavy metal that comes with a toxic warning ⚠️ label, at least the tube I got of this brand came with one). It is definitely a wonderful color & my favorite.

You should really learn about pigments and not names.. transparent yellow is made from nickel and is toxic and cerulian blue is made from cobalt. Maimeriblu colours is made from single pigments and not like several pigments mixed together. Typically all proffesional colours are made from pigments and gum arabic and sometimes honey, oxgall and glycerin. I have no idea what blending agents you talked about, cheap paint usually have fillers but not proffesional paints.
