I don't know the full extent of things but... My mother stayed with my father out of principal or religious faith. My father threatened that divorce would've been my fault if it had happened, I was only 8. To this day, I do wish that she had divorced him. He was physically, verbally abusive and manipulative. I'm still struggling the affects past mid 20s and I am so co-dependent. Severe anxiety, PTSD, Depression. If she had divorced him, I honestly believed we would've been a happier family. Sure it would've been tougher financially but I'd take unconditional love any day over financial security and a dysfunctional household. I'm in tears now writing this.

I had PTSD, and I really believe I came out the other side stronger. I was told by my therapist, that what gives people PTSD isn't the trauma, but the distance between your perception of the world, and the reality that shatters it. So it's not about how bad the things you experienced were, it's about accepting what has happened and growing past it.

The non-toxic household is such an important thing for kids. Having grown up in a toxic environment, I still have traumas and internal issues that have carried on with me even as an adult. By the way, I like that it's becoming more normal to meet someone through an online dating app. I met my now husband through a dating app as well.

"hindsight is 20/20" is never more true than when you get out of an unhealthy relationship to somehow take the leap of faith to ever get into another relationship with someone who is right for you. The revelations of how bad that previous relationship was is astounding. And the appreciation for the healthy relationship is incomparable. 💞

It sounds like it's so much more than a romance and a friendship as well! One of the reasons I think my husband and I love each other so much is we're friends. I genuinely want to spend as much time with him as I can, share the funniest memes I find, and find mutual hobbies we can do together. I separated with ex husband of 9 years. I wasn't happy and I wasn't going to put up being unhappy just because we had a son together. I often sometimes feel guilty too. As much as I wanted to live that fairytale ending, it was important for me to be happy so I can continue to raise my son happily. Also both my ex and I have found partners that make us happy as well, and my son has accepted that.

The part about single parent families really got me. My parents split when I was 6 & my sister was 4. Although we spent weekends at my dad's house, we were pretty much raised by my mum. I wouldn't have it any other way, as it made me so independant & self-reliant. It's not broken, it really is just a normal family. 💜
