Epic that holds up to this very day. Fun Fact: The very first day of the shooting, Matt Damon and Ben Affleck started crying out of happiness, because it was a scene between Robin Williams and Stellan Skarsgård, accomplished actors, doing Damon's and Affleck's scene verbatim, and they had waited so long (five years) for this to happen.

I think one of my favorite moments in this movie is one I don't see many people talking about.. Gerald and Sean arguing passionately about Will's future and him walking in on it at the end. On first glance, it's easy to agree with Sean and dismiss Gerald for being misguided, but I don't think that's the point. It doesn't matter which one of them is right, what matters is that they both care deeply enough to get that heated about it, and Will finally has an example that he can't explain away, of two parental figures that he never had, proving they care about him when they don't know he's watching. I always thought that was the moment he realized he could fully trust Sean enough to be vulnerable and honest. Really beautiful writing.

Matt Damon & Ben Affleck wrote this when they were in college. They won the Academy Award for writing for this. As to other films where the star wrote it, Rocky & Citizen Kane are the only ones that come to my mind, though I'm sure there are many others.

Taika Waititi also did it with one of his movies over here in New Zealand called boy. He also generally appears in his other creations but I would say boy is one of the ones where he’s like a really main character. What we do in the shadows could be counted but technically it was written by lots of different people (people of which also played characters).

This film is fantastic, because it feels so real. The dialogue, the reactions, everything. And Robin Williams (of course) is such a rock star in this film. You should watch Cinema Therapy's take on this movie. They have a wonderful breakdown on not only the characters, but Robin William's portrayal of a GOOD therapist. Thank you for doing this film, it is one of my, many, favorites.

Next time you watch this, focus on Robin Williams' character and how he is also changed and helped by working with Will. Will is smart enough to analyze each of the therapists he is sent to and hits them at their weak points. It works on Williams' too, and his violent reaction is NOT OK for a therapist, but it starts him thinking not just about Will but about himself. The character arc is not as obvious as Will's but there are clues throughout.

A lot of the dialogue between Will and Shawn was ad libed, including the part about the wife farting. When Will laughed at that part, it was actually Matt Damon genuinely laughing.

14:44 they were not bad therapists, he was just too damn built up in his emotions and felt like insulting them was "a good idea". Someone with walls built up around extreme sadness like him too, but able to control them since hes a therapist was what he needed, i mean...thats how i interpreted it. Williams was the only one that did not stop at the first encounter after he insulted him

When you say he is getting through to Will, that is true that he is now paying attention even if he is still acting out. What I find interesting is that Will is a genius academically but to Will I think he regards Sean a genius if you will of his understanding what is going on with him emotionally. Will is ill equipped to handle what is going on in his head and I think he’s starting to see the truth. You can tell he is starting to look up to Sean. He respects him. This is good stuff. I don’t know this to be true but I think you may have experienced something along the way or at least knew someone who was a recipient of violence. You have good insights. Good reaction. I’m going to subscribe.

I didn't have the kind of hellish upbringing Will did. My family was quite loving actually. But I had a tough time with my peers and was bullied and excluded a lot, including with some physical abuse but mostly emotional abuse (which can be worse). I can relate to the kinds of things Will feels in this movie and some of the dynamics at play. It's not a completely accurate representation of therapy and trauma. Like in most movies, the timeline is way too brief. You don't go from where Will was at the beginning of the movie to where he is at the end in a matter of weeks or even months. But as a way of making you feel the emotions of what it is like to be in someone like Will's shoes, it is quite effective.

I can't help but notice how they make it sound like the math problems on the blackboard were really hard, although they aren't at all. All four parts of the first one are about a topic we teach in our first year math course for computer science (and they're *not* a Fourier system like the professor claimed in class). The first part of the second problem is one of those that are hard if you don't have the right tools at hand, but becomes rather easy once you do. The second part of the second problem is essentially just going through a few case distinctions. In fact, there are still two trees missing in addition to those written on the board.
