I have been asked and seen the question posed. Is it worth the extra cost for the DR units? I answer this question today as it's not as cut and dry as you might think. If you don't watch the whole video you might miss the final tidbit.

Very cool vid, man. I’d been looking at possibly picking up a pair of DR-1’s, but ended up going with a Parasound a23+ that I’m running balanced from a Schiit Freya + preamp into my Tektons. It gives me more than enough power at 160 wpc. I tried running em SE’d, but going balanced just adds so much, as you’re well aware. I’ve had other rigs that some would consider “better”, which as we know, doesn’t really mean a thing in HiFi. My upgraditis has finally been cured as far as major pieces of gear goes. Glad you’ve seemed to have cured yours as well! ✌️🎶🙂

scottyo64 If you’re ever in MA, you’re more than welcome to swing by. On the other side of that coin, I’m dying to hear a pair of LRS’s (or any Maggies for that matter) in my rig. Not sure I’ve got enough room to let em breathe though. lol Edit: I may eventually just buy a pair a LRS’s, cuz I’ve got a friend that’d definitely take em if they didn’t work out in my space.

Nick, have you tried other tubes yet? I’ve had my Freya+ for a few months now and have started so far with some Electro-Harmonix gold pins. I have several others that I’ll try out as well over the six months or so and see if I land on a clear winner. The only problem is it’s easy to spend as much money on tubes as the cost of this Schiit.
@NickP333

@@Steveh817 Hi there. Yes, I have tried other tubes. Luckily, NOS 6SN7’s and 6SL7’s are still available for somewhat reasonable prices. Right now, I’ve got a matched pair of NOS RCA 6SN7 tubes in V1 and V2, and changed out the JJ’s in the other 2 spots for new Tung Sol’s. The 2 tubes on the far right of the Freya are the ones that effect the sound the most, so you don’t necessarily have to change all 4 of em. You can also try putting a couple of 6SL7’s in those two spots also for a bit more gain, but I find it sounds better with the 6SN7’s, especially NOS RCA’s or JanGE’s. The NOS tubes definitely make a difference for the better in the sound quality over the stock JJ’s. I’m sure your EH tubes are most likely an upgrade over the stock JJ’s, but I haven’t tried those particular tubes. There’s a PSVane tube I’d like to try, but haven’t gotten around to it yet, and I’m happy with how it sounds anyway. I hope that was of help, and you’re welcome to hit me up with any other questions. ✌️🎶🙂 Edit: A lot of how it’ll sound obviously also has to do with the rest of your system. If possible, run the Freya balanced if your amp has balanced inputs. That’ll upgrade your sound right there.

Hey Scotty, looks like you are Emotiva and Klispch Fan. Liked your review. I am currently using 7.2.2 Atmos set up with Klipsch speakers and using Marantz SR8012 and powering 5 channels with Emotiva 5 Channel Amp. I am really interested in upgrading system to separate AV processor - Maybe Marantz 8805 or new Anthem AVM 70 coming up. I was thinking of upgrading my current 5 channel Emotiva amp to 9 channel - that extra four channel is 65 W stereo module but I am only running 2 small atmos and 2 small surround back - DO you think that is worth it or I need to buy whole separate 5 channel amp.
@scottyo64
@scottyo64 3 жыл бұрын
Here is what I do, I run separate amps for the front 3 channels and use the Marantz to power all the other channels. I will say if you can afford it and want the power external amps are the way to go. If you are going to upgrade your amp good with an 11 channel if you can afford it. Youthman loves his Monolith. I am an Emotiva fan but I think they shine with 2 channel stuff. If I could afford it I would have a stack of Emotiva DR1sfor my home theater. FYI I chased the Home Theater dragon for years. Once I got to a 7.2.2 I decided that was it. I can switch to 7.2.4. From what I am seeing I would wait on a new processor. There has already been issues with 8k let the bugs get worked out and the price to come down as it always does. The tech is fairly new and not much out there in 8k.

I am looking to purchase mono blocks and am seriously considering the DR1s. The price is reasonable compared to many mono amps. I have an RME dac that I use as a pre amp, it has balanced outs and works great, but may consider an actual preamp. My wife loves the Magnaplainers (sp?) We may be looking into that also, but I want to get the back end squared away before I buy new speakers. I would hate to plug in my new speakers and they don't perform because the amps are weak. Takes the joy out of new speakers to me, I love the initial "WOW!" Hate working backwards. Thanks for the video.

Amps are far from weak. They do a very good job powering the Magnepan's. Some people are not found of Emotiva, but I love my DR1's. My Emotiva gear has and will continue to be my main system. I do have Cornwall IVs now, but switch the maggies in every so often for a change of pace. Edit: at 1,000 watts into 4 ohms, I have never had issues playing the maggies even at high volume levels.

@@scottyo64 Nice. I prefer the big box 3-ways myself. Though I have never really heard true high end towers, most towers I have heard always seem weak on the low end. I guess that is what subs are for. We saw some Magnepans at a guy's house at a party. My wife was fascinated by them. He was playing them, sounded good but not the optimal environment for any real evaluation. 👍

My thoughts? I don't believe it would make a big difference, and you might be disappointed. Here is what I can tell you. More "head room" with power is never a bad thing.
