"How Can You Mend a Broken Heart" is a song released by the Bee Gees in 1971. It was written by Barry and Robin Gibb and was the first single on the group's 1971 album Trafalgar. It was their first US No. 1 single and also reached No. 1 in Cashbox magazine for two weeks.[2]
In the US Atco Records issued both mono and stereo versions of the song on each side as a promo single.[3] The B-side was a Maurice Gibb composition "Country Woman".
The song appears in the 2013 film American Hustle and on its soundtrack. It also provided the title to director Frank Marshall's 2020 documentary film The Bee Gees: How Can You Mend a Broken Heart.

Credit to the Bee Gees for writing this song, but Al Green owns this one. His voice wavers, the strings enter, and then the backing vocals take the whole thing to the next level. The shimmering violins complement the church organ and then up pops the drums to keep the broken heart beating. Super smooth.

Yeah. Didn't even know the Bee Gees even had anything to do with this song! If they did, AL took this song to a place where mere mortals dare not tread.

Al definitely has a MORE SOULFUL VERSION of this song. This Al Greene version is special to me. It was the first song that I slow danced with the boy next door. I had a crush on him.

This is great by the Bee Gees but Al's version will always be the one that means the most to me. My mother was in love with Al and I grew up listening to his music. I miss her. Great reaction.

Wow. The Bee Gee's version I've always liked. And as it should, it made me a little blue at the edges. This one? My heart's been ripped out, stomped on, and shoved down the garbage disposal! I love it! 😆

Empress - there is an album called “The Soul of The Bee Gees” (or something like that) that features about ten Bee Gees’ songs that were performed by R& B artists. This song of course is on it. The Bee Gees are brilliant writers and Al Green is a legend.

Always a great cover. You got that Memphis sound that Al Green always laid down with Willie Mitchell producing and laying down on the organ. Take the Gibbs lyrics and he got yourself an amazing piece of music

@@poppiesuavee5792 and of course the late Al Jackson of Booker T & the mg's on the kit holding the groove. Of course sadly Al Jackson killed by his wife in 1975 with a 22 caliber gun after an argument at their home in Memphis

There's a special emotion in the live Bee Gees version from Melbourne 1974 that no one can duplicate ♡ .. a forward motion and melancholy this mannered recording by Al Green doesn't have. I don't know how to explain it. Each has their own qualities, I guess. I somehow always return to Barry and his guitar.

Yes, he's gorgeous on that one and made it to top of charts in the US. But there's no need to compare with the original. Why? Because they've been on different ways to match that song. Bros. Gibb to bring in their perfect three-part harmonies and not trying to overdo the solo-parts. And they charted high nearly everywhere on the planet, with that song and also so many others. Can't think of any songwriters, with the same impact to the world of music at all!
