For question 1: There is no specified vibration frequency for this engine, the belt tension is set by the spring preload, when the tensioner pointer is adjusted to the correct position following the OEM instruction, the belt tension is correct with no further measurement. Question 2: The pointer should be in the adjustment window when the initial adjustment is made, but according to the VW instructions a small variation is acceptable after the engine has been rotated or run.

Hello Tim, there are no stupid questions, you can ask your questions anytime. The milled surface on the crankshaft timing belt sprocket must sit on the milled surface on the crankshaft journal. The bearing surfaces must be free of grease and oil. Best regards, Your Continental Aftermarket Team

Yes! I think the crank sprocket has a keyway!, but the camshaft sprokets do not!

Good morning Tim & Rusty, The vehicle has a camshaft adjustment! So that nothing is adjusted when tensioning the timing belt, the screws must be loosened and tightened again only after the tensioning process. That still doesn't make sense to me, and I've changed many timing belts in the past. Only reason I would have to remove the bolt is to change a camshaft seal or something. Just seems like an unnecessary step

@@MegaCbrrider camshafts aren't perfectly circular and that apparently means pulley bolts need loosened 🤷🏽‍♂️

Also, are there timing marks on the cam gears or do I have to make my own?

For this model we have different options: Installation overview - timing belt, exhaust side with cam phaser and Installation overview - timing belt, exhaust side with timing belt sprocket.
