This movie follows the typical south american style of "Magical Realism", famous for instance for the novels of Gabriel Garcia Marquez. It combines the realism of a small Colombian village with the magical impossibility of a grandma that admits to being wrong about something.

One of the things I love about this movie is how most of the powers correspond to family roles, e.g. the strong one, the one who changes shape in order to please others, the one who knows everyone's business, the one who speaks uncomfortable truths and gets scapegoated, and so on. It's really clever.

@Carnivius While I understand what you mean about, I feel like I'm doing the absolute minimum. As an black American I would like to see an animated movie where the character that's supposed represents me actually stays human for the entire thing. But that being said, we also need technology to Disney is a business period, and it's a business run by old cisgender white men. Some money is going to be the way that we force them to actually put the representation out there. Because if we don't support the movie because we don't think it's enough. They'll turn that around and be like, "See, we gave you what you said you wanted; you didn't support it." And then using that to justify not giving us more. And I'm in no way saying that we shouldn't call out the fact that they are doing the bare minimum. We definitely need to. And that can be with supporting other companies that are giving us more period when they are doing the right thing. But we also need to acknowledge that it's there and it's available. This is a movie where all the cast is Hispanic and the majority is actually of Colombian descent. They also took cast and crew to Columbia to do more research to make sure that what was being put out was authentic. I'm just saying let's not throw out the baby with the bathwater. But let's still throw out the bathwater

@@carn9507 You're generalising Disney as a company. Yes Disney only cares about money (just like Nintendo), but the hundreds of people behind the *movies* simply want to tell stories. The animators, storyboard artists, musicians and everyone else had one goal in mind. To tell a compelling story and showing the world the Colombian Culture. So keep in mind there is always more than one side to things. They people inside the company always fight for more representation, here it was for Luisa being a big, muscled woman. One day the higher ups will be changed to new management and hopefully things will finally get better. Sexual assault happens everywhere in every industry. Disney should have a policy in place for such things. Like even on The Voice we hear about assault. It has to be handled better.

Disney missed the point so much in the merch... Not only Luisa is great and of course people would want her dolls, but also if they wanted to sell Isabela dolls they should have made dolls with her new look and not the perfect one, because little kids can understand seeing the movie that Isabella was unhappy pretending to be perfect and that the look at the end is who she really is, and if a kid likes Isabela why would they want the doll from when she was unhappy???

(24:55) "She's only thinking about herself" hold on, that is actually a good thing. up til that moment, she was NOT thinking about herself. granted, we haven't really seen it that much in the movie, but she was never doing things for herself. she made flowers because it was needed. We never saw her actually being selfish. she had only two interactions with Maribel up to this point in the movie, the hair in the face, and the "I don't want a word out of you", both can be boiled down to "the family needs this to go flawlessly, so don't screw it up".

Bruno was 'Evil Green' in the 'We Don't Talk about Bruno' song because people were portraying him as a villain when really all he was doing was telling people prophecies they didn't want to hear. His prophecy stones are probably green for the same reason, not because they are evil but because they are unwelcome.

Also - Mirabel's glasses and the nursery (esp at the start of that song) also were green, perhaps indicating in a more subtle way her unspoken role as acting family scapegoat (and connection between her and Bruno). I love that Disney is playing with it's own tropes (green = evil/bad) as part of the visual storytelling.
@elbruces

Either that or because green is the color of the MCU's Time Stone. Camilo (the shapeshifter) portrays Bruno in that song as looking scary, but we should also realize that the last time he saw Bruno, he was probably pretty young - he seems to be just a couple of years older than Maribel, and she was 7 when Bruno disappeared. Bruno's reputation as being creepy/scary had probably been pretty well established by then, so that's how he remembers him. Also, Camilo's kind of a troll.

Which is why I don't understand why her room wasn't a soundproof sanctuary for her. But I guess when I think about it, everyone's room is there to train their abilities. Antonio's jungle allows him to be among all the animals and get to know them and how to best use them. Isa's room is a place for her to practice her skill growing things, though it seems like Abuela Alma molded her into someone who just grows pretty flowers, because it's obvious she can grow whole TREES. (Her gift would have been much more useful growing food that the village needs, but she is the first grandchild, the eldest, and like a lot of us first grandchildren she is more spoiled and doted on than the ones who come later.) Bruno's room was obviously a space to have visions, and I think the fact it was so hard to get _to_ that specific area where he has them keeps him from just using that gift all the time. Instead of just casually using that power, he has to _work_ to have a vision. Those are the only rooms where we see the inside, of course, so we can only speculate about the others. But if Delores' room wasn't a soundproof area for her to get away from all the noise, that's just mean.

The song has a lot of meaning, especially if you are Colombian. It talks about growing up, transforming yourself, adapting and growing, especially when violence has touched your life as it has happened to all of us in Colombia. Also, for us, butterflies, especially yellow ones, are a symbol. Our Nobel Prize winning writer, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, uses them as a symbol of the resilience of the people of my country, and how we transform pain and sadness into something better and more beautiful. How we have overcome violence and pain to grow as people, as a country, and to move forward in spite of everything.

The reason she never told anyone (before Mirabel) is becuse they don´t talk about bruno. She tells everyone about his visionat the dinner table becuse thatsnot tecnically talking about him, it´s about Mirabel. Antonio hears that Bruno never left as soon as he gwt his gift butis bound to silence as well. The only one that´s really "spared"from a curse narrative is Camillo, but hemust have feelt soguilt that he got a gift when Mirabel didn´t (they are only a few months apart if I remember correctly). He saw how close they where when Mirabel was younger andit must have feelt horrible seeing how she was just pushed to the side after that. Camillo is also the onlyone trying to save Mirabel with his gift not the candle. Something cool someone else pointed out was that Mirabel ends up doing/helping others do everything she sings about in "waiting for a miracle". She moves the mountains (well they crack but still) She helps Isa see her value and that her power is more than just growing flowers,resulting in growing trees and other plants . I don´t remember the controling the hurricane thing I belive it was that she is the only one Casita dosn´t push out becuse she is determend to save the candle (tus "controling the hurricane She heals whats broken (the family) AND she makes Alma open her eyes to the pain she has caused.

Dos Orguitas is the Oscar song. And even though Bruno is the number one hit in the land, this one hits SO HARD. Two caterpillars in love, but they have to separate in order to chrysalis. Think the legend of the Butterfly Lovers in China.

It's my favourite song from this movie. It makes me emotional the way I expect from a Disney movie and it has so much meaning. It ties together all the strings on why Abuela became the way she is now and yet shows the other side of hers, in a time where she was just as full of wonder and hope as her grandkids are now.
@alejandroyava
@alejandroyava Жыл бұрын
What I love the most about this movie is that there is no villain. The Abuela may be an antagonist for a time, but in general, this movie is about a family with problems, trying to cope with them. No super complicated, no last minute villains, no plot twist that takes the movie to another direction, is all about the family.

I remember watching this and finding one of the most expressive characters in the movie was the Casita and thinking the Casita was the spirit of Pedro. It looks after the family and protects them when the house falls apart like how Pedro protected the family before he died. It would also explain why Maribel didn’t get a room as Maribels gift is taking care of the family, like Pedro, so her ’room’ is the entire house.

At first, Mirabel was so happy for Antonio, her cousin (9:10), and his gift of talking to animals (8:39) (all thanks to the love she feels for him), but when the rest of her family takes the family photo without her (9:24), her smile...disappears (9:22)

I think Luisa's emotional breakdowns were meant to be less comedic than they kept portraying it. I mean, me as an audience can decide how to react to wjat a character does. But it seems like all her moments where she showed weakness, it's played out like a funny scene meant to be laughed at. Not every moment, but most of them.

My theory about this is that Mirabel was / is intended by the Magic to take over after her grandmother as the caretaker of the house / candle. Remember the grandmother herself has no special powers except that her love for her husband ignited the candle. That's why Mirabel's "door" is the Front Door of the house. (Ah. Isabella's song really got to me when I first watched this movie. I actually identified a lot with that character, being expected to be perfect and hit all these high expectations when all you really want to do is be left alone to make your art. Isabella is also potentially the strongest character, she could ensure a constant supply of food and a good harvest, but she's being asked to make things look pretty. no one could see what she could really do. she's also really mean to Mirabel because she feels like she's being punched down on. honestly, as the youngest child/bottom member of my not always so nice family, I get it.

With the animation, it is on an amazing level - during the strong sister's song when she says "I glow cause I know what my worth is", if you look at her shoulders, it even has the textures of fine soft short hairs that real skin has. This is some of the finest detail work I have seen - oh, and the sound is spatially correct so as someone who is singing or speaking moves to the right or left the voice does so too. Now I am wondering how long before there is a Broadway production of this because it would work perfectly on stage [ok, flying unicorn donkeys might need a bit of change in representation, but.....]

So, I've heard this go around about Bruno's green, that is his main colour is the Disney's "Go Away Green", a colour they supposedly designed to keep visible things hidden or hard to focus on. They would use this at Disney parks to hide structures, staff doors and other parts that would be considered displeasing to the eye. Bruno is not the run away family member, but the hidden one. Disney used a colour that is distinctly him but also makes him hard to find. If you look carefully in promotional posters, you may even spot him with his hood up and looking away... well it's either Bruno or Hernando, I'm not sure.

That was my favorite song too. A lot of people like the Bruno song the most, but the beat of Surface Pressure is better in my mind. They are all great though. Also, I agree with your one statement about how Mirabel was taking over for her Abuela. Notice how when the magic came back there was no candle still. I think Mirabel is the new candle. My opinion is that her Abuela viewed the magic given to them as an obligation whereas Mirabel always viewed it as a gift. So by taking the magic off her Abuela's hands, she lightens the load on her so she can enjoy her life and her family while Mirabel does what she loves most, helping her family.

The fact so many people who watch this movie talk about absolutely crying non stop at Luisas surface pressure song makes me so happy that it wasn't only me who felt that way, yet it also makes me feel so heartwrenched that's how so many people felt, that they couldn't stop crying because they related so much, and one of my absolutely favorite stories is of a mother who was watching this with her daughter and while she was in tears she turned to her daughter to see how she related to it and she saw she was just enjoying the song, in that moment she realized her daughter didn't have the same burdens and trauma she did, she said the cycle ended with her, and that was heartwrenching and heartwarming

It's Columbia, they got a lot of coffee. I don't know if all the small children there are hyper-caffeinated though. I kinda want to see La Familia Madrigal as a super-hero team. Mirabel's power is the ability to stop or slow time, plus reality control / illusions, and mind control to force others into a full musical number to explain their feelings, *plus* altering their memory so they think they just had a conversation with her afterwards, all at the same time. It's pretty impressive. I also am a big fan of Dolores' little "chirp" noises. "She just thinks about herself." In that moment, Isabela was realizing that her powers were vastly more flexible than she'd ever thought, her entire life. She doesn't just make things pretty, she might be able revolutionize all agriculture. That's kind of a big deal, she's having a huge personal revelation here. Meanwhile, her annoying little sister wanted to hug her right then for some reason.

One of the things that I’ve noticed (that no one else has commented on) is that right before Waiting For A Miracle, when her family goes to take a photo, she doesn’t move. She doesn’t even try to get into the photo, and if you look carefully at the other family photos, she’s not in any of them. Meaning, someone, likely Abuela, asked her to step aside before. Her missing out on family photos was purposeful and not accidental like it seems.

People keep saying it's terrible that the family left her out of that picture, but it's way more sad then that. It's easy to get lost in a crowd, any one of them could have thought she was on the other side of the group. She is quite small after all, but she's not so small that anyone need to be in charge of her. Those that MIGHT have noticed her missing wasn't going to stop the next step in this "perfect night" that they had been pressured into for weeks! Grandma called out, "We need a picture. Everyone come!" She CHOSE not to go, other people even passed her to get closer. SHE decided not to join her family for that photo. I don't think she felt worthy enough to be in that picture, or be a part of that family anymore. That's why she wasn't there.
