Time to sell my Anvil, the end of forging and damascus for it, but its gone to a fellow maker who loves it as much as I did. So bring on the big sister, time to clean her up. Not shown in the video I did spent an hour with a wet stone dressing the face back to flat then some 1000 grit on a mop wheel.

A work of love Loz to bring this once loved anvil, that has subsequently been neglected back to a fully functional anvil that should serve you well.

my old mousehole ( i assume thats what it is, no maker marks) has a big bow in the surface, too much to grind out i reckon. Fortunatly im just a hobbyist lol and it doesnt effect my quality of work :D take that anyway you like lol

you gotta work with what you have Martin, flat and clean helps but not the be and end all, some guys would love an anvil in any condition.

I have the same sort of issue with mine. I guess I could mill the top flat, but I generally can compensate for lack of flatness. I dropped the thing on my pinki once. I’d encourage you not to do that.

@@tropifiori never mill a anvil down, on older anvil you Will destroy the steel top that was forgewelded on (and even in most cast anvils) remove hardness.

Eh Up Loz. Just found this video while I am three parts done with the same job on my 1 1/4 Brooks. This one came from a grammar school where it had endured a lot of errant schoolboy blows and carried the scars. Fortunately none of these were deeper than about a thirty second inch, also some degree of centre hollowing and reasonably chip free edges, so with a lot of flap disc/draw file sessions, I have now got a clear and level face. A real exercise in patience and close attention to keeping files clean. Found a couple of cup grind wheels yesterday, about 400 grit [a quid at boot sale] and I will finish off by hand using these and then radius the edges. Very satisfying job, but a bit of a trial for arthritic hands. One day I need to get the same job done on big bertha, my 4cwt steel beastie .... but not just yet ;

Hi mate. Good to hear your story. Very satisfying when the jobs done and a pleasure to use but a fair bit of work to get the nice flat clean finish. The step down did seem as hard as the face when I was cleaning it up. Thankfully that part was unmarked. Good luck with the big lad. 👍👍

@@LozHarrop Cheers Loz - I did get the cutting face clear of dings and since I never use it for cutting anyway, I'll keep a really square edge there safely out of the way for the odd occasion I might need one. As you say, these cast anvils are a bit prone to edge chipping. I'm a firm believer in taking time and effort to get tools just right as having put all that work in, you respect them and are far less likely to do something daft or take chances Be good be safe and be lucky ... Sorry to say but you use the file wrong. A file only works correct when you move it transversely to its teeth. You move it nearly parallel to the teeth which has nearly no effect. More important is that a file is not flat. On one side its slightly convex, on the other side concave of course.
@LozHarrop
@LozHarrop 2 жыл бұрын
Was only using the files to remove the scaling and rust they were too dull to cut steel but they were flat and just used as scrapers really, which is better than just hitting it with a grinder
