Two things: One, I have been listening to Velvet Moon today and I love it! Cody Francis also popped up in the playlist and I'm digging him also! Two, I'll be damned if you have not inspired me to get my ass in gear. Watching you do all that you do has lit a fire under my ass to stop existing and start living. Thanks for that, and all the great info you have given on this channel.

OK .. Last night I went to bed with an idea for a grinding setup but went to sleep too soon. Today, when you mentioned your idea , the entire design popped into my head. Now, you do the same and I'll try to point out what I came up with to help ....🤣😉😉👍You're gonna need a couple of 4 pillow block bearings and two smooth shafts, a couple of pulleys, a few bolts of various sizes, and some scrap lumber.... Oh well, you know ...

Don’t get me wrong, flap discs work great but for bulk stock removal I’ve used the round pieces of sand paper backed up on a flexible plate. Available at Harbor Freight although I don’t like their Warrior brand consumables. Regardless, it’s very satisfying watching the anvil restoration progress.

This fellow putterer understands completely! It is pure joy to get out in the shop, scrounge through old salvaged parts and make something useful. I knew where you were going with this as soon as you started talking about the project. Happy rabbit trail! BTW - the guts of an old trash compactor might provide a good start for a screw drive mechanism to move the grinding wheel across the surface.

Surface grinders are very nice. Even a home made cobble job is better than endlessly standing there with an angle grinder. A frame to limit how much up and down travel the grinder has gives you a better chance of having a flat surface when you are done. Just a thought. I have seen several rigs for flattening large surfaces with a router. They involve a level frame and a cross rail that lets the router slide back and forth at a set height. The frame is moved the width of the router bit and another pass is made. A simple rig like that could be made inexpensively and would let you use your existing grinder. The wheel will make a huge difference. Ian mentioned CBN. That would be a big improvement in your ability to remove metal efficiently.

Morning Jim.... I enjoy tinkering, lots of fun and yes, sometimes it doesn't work and you wind up spending hours of time and it turns up wasted, but if you don't try, you won't know. Like I said before, there isn't enough time in a day. Snow for us tomorrow, yuck!

Hi Jim, I do come back to catch up on things peridically... Have you tried ceramic grit sanding belts? They run 2-3x the cost of regular, but last 5-6x as long. Bloew's carries them, as do some Ace Hardware stores. Of course, I haven't watched the most recent anvil vids, so you've likely solved this particular headache one way or another; still, I like them for heavy-duty belt sanding and grinding. Good luck, and keep on chuggin'! Puttering and tinkering are important creative learning skills! They eat up time, though, and have cost me a lot in the time I can't charge my customers for. Still, the skillsaw track I spent a day building and tweaking made it possible for me to finish a customer project I couldn't have done any other way, so it was worth it in the long run.

You can make some jig to hold your grinder at the proper angle and make it on the principle of a board leveling jig like they use for routers. You will get a level surface in the range of .005 to.025 but then how level do you need to make good tools? You could make it out of angle iron too.

Maybe you can build kind of a sled to keep the grinder at a certain level. Just like you did when making the big scarf joints using the router. The whet grinding wheel won't remove enough material in an acceptable time

Puttering around campus looking for a quiet study spot. When did libraries get so damned noisy? But yeah, puttering around projects at home combined with ADHD and brain damage, I've got so many started, but not finished, projects that my evenings and weekends are claimed for at least two years after graduation and finding a job. It's always fun to start a project, and fulfilling to finish one, it's that dull part in the middle, like Jim's between the ears, that eats so much time. Hope you create a new grinding tool out of those old parts of machines. Yeah, if nothing else, HF tools make okay building blocks.

Jim I am bummed out. I can't watch any videos on KZfaq do to some construction down the street (Well that is who I blame). They have caused some issues with the local lines that carry the DSL on them. They were digging around the phone lines so I really think they messed something up Anyway because that I had the choice of downloading your videos or trying to watch then in 144 quality. Looked like the lens had grease smeared on it it was so fuzzy. So how are your ears after that much grinding? Mine are already ringing from just watching a tiny bit.

Then realized I "rang the bell" right after I subscribed, and in the settings, I asked for notices of every post you make. Yet I have not been getting any notices at all. Just went in and checked the bell settings, and it had been changed to 'occasional' notices. I did NOT do that, myself. I set it all back to what I originally set it to. Lets see how long that lasts. And lastly... Just what the heck have you been saying or doing while I haven't been watching to make youtube decide to throttle you? LOL Oh, I know... It's probably all that dang cussing! ROFLOL =0)

Planned to fail is the reason plastic parts are on everything these days. This means profit for the companies making the junk. Profit in the low cost to manufacture and customers buying over and over the same JUNK! What consumers need to do is STOP buying JUNK. Forgo the desire to fabricate a surface grinder for the reconditioning of the anvil. Focus on the anvil end goal. Avoid the temptation to stray in sake of the anvil. Buy you own proper grinding wheel or hire a willing machine shop to do the work.
