With the millennium approaching, a series of disturbing signs suggests that Satan (Arnold Schwarzenegger) has returned to Earth and is walking the streets of New York City. It seems that Satan needs to find a woman who will bear his child, as the time for the arrival of the anti-Christ draws near.

I always found this depiction of Satan to be fascinating; despite the dated CGI there's quite a lot of detail put into his form, you can almost make out the angelic visage under that corruption and how he's been twisted by his own pride and the fall into darkness.

When you see him spread his wings, you can kinda squint and imagine him as Lucifer, the beautiful head of the Angelic choir. He still retains the basic form, but like you say it's been twisted by pride and evil into something hideous

I remember watching this in the Cinema in 1999, never seen Arnie so vulnerable in a movie before, his acting as a tortured soul where his wife and child got murdered to being beaten up badly by Satan himself was very underrated, it showed that Arnie is an awesome actor...damn can't believe this was 1999, time has gone quick.

Nothing is new anymore and it is the freshness of life that you have as a child that makes experiences stand out in your mind, giving you a sense that you have experienced more in a shorter time period. An example of this is when you go on holiday for two weeks. The first week always goes slowly because it is new and you see new places and have new experiences. However the second week seem to fly by because you start to develop a familiarity with your surroundings. So to prevent life from flying by unnoticed, ensure that you try to practice some presence of mind, or being 'present in the moment' on a regular basis, and an easy way to achieve this is to spend a day in unfamiliar surroundings occasionally, maybe experiencing a new restaurant or take a day trip. You will naturally be more present and seem to slow time down. Finally, remember that as you get older you naturally begin to anticipate the finish line coming. If you fixate on that, then everything that is happening now will go unnoticed. Even focusing on an upcoming event can mentally wipe out the weeks leading up to it. So just enjoy the now, remember that the past and the future don't exist...they only exist in your head as memories and thoughts, it is always now, now is the best moment of your life, don't think it will be any better a day, a week or a year from now or you are just looking forward to something that only exists in your head. Always keep this in mind and enjoy the rest of your life brother.

I remember seeing this movie in a movie theater just a few days before the turn of the century. At that time I did not have the critical sense that I have now and I was full of fears for the turn of the century. That film was a kick, due to the context, to my peace of mind.

Fun fact An alternate ending was filmed in which Jericho resurrects after impaling himself on the sword of the statue and then leaves the church with Christine. Test audiences preferred the ending where Jericho dies. Even though the "resurrection" ending was never released, it was used in a novelization of the movie.

Cool story about this scene…originally Arnold was supposed to use a machine gun and blast Satan back to hell. Yes, absolutely as stupid as it sounds. They brought a priest in as a consultant for the film and he says something along the lines of “this story is great, but why does it have to end like that? Why can he not win with faith?” So they changed it, and I must say the ending is MUCH better for it!

Let me tell you something: There have been numerous cinematic adaptations of Satan/the Devil but this is, by far, one of the most intimidating and sinister. He's not so much an entity as he is a malevolent force, which is reinforced by the earthquake and wind he unleashes on the church. Truly terrifying.

The anticipation is more terrifying than the monster. The earthquake, the ominous music, the benches being thrown, the glass shattering and the complete darkness afterwards. The early CGI just puts you off, even if it was good for the time.

One of the things I loved in this movie was the prop sword that Arnie used in the end. It was the exact design of the Thundercats Sword of Omens minus the Eye of Thundera. I looked up for that sword and the closest thing I saw of it is that is called the Sword of Michael, and I saw it once at a Malls blade shop around the same year this movie came out.

Nevermind. It was all a 1/6 miniature. But they did use a real Cathedral for the beginning shots of the scene. Very well done! But I also notice that at 0:46 Arnold seems to disappear from the scene.

The Romans wanted power, & used Christianity as the fastest means of spreading, with several European nations eventually fusing Church & State, so only the upper class could run the church system. Alot of original Christians & Jews were monks. They explicitly avoided delving too much into politics unless asked to. So before making ridiculous statements, maybe take a basic history class or something.🤷‍♂️

The movie never said that was Satan's true form. I think that's just the form he took to scare Jericho, before he posessed him. In the beginning of the film, he had more of a translucent appearance.
