The people of Gauteng this week were in for a shocking surprise when they had to recharge their electrical bills and were met with 2 additional rates and tariff increases.
Some residents are still confused as to what exactly the R200 extra "maintenance and service costs" by some municipalities entails while the overall Eskom tariff implemented as of the 1st of July has sparked fears that these could lead to potential unrest in the metro.

We are tired of huge tariff increases to cover for government inefficiencies, theft and corruption. What are they doing to cost cut and reduce theft? Creating new departments and doubling of deputy ministers? New vehicles and bodyguards for everyone at the top once they pass through all the increases post the election?

They are charging R1500 service charge to businesses with prepaid electricity . They are crazy. This is unacceptable and unaffordable for most people

Cape Town charges higher for fixed electricity tariffs R218. The also fixed charge for water availability tariffs R189 for 25mm pipe. But at least our services work.

As a Eskom customer I pay a line rental fee of R1500 per month! I am a pensioner living on a smallholding. Total account for using 240 units is approx R3100! This is robbery plain and simple.

Many other town and cities pay this for years on pre paid. If we want consistent quality services we must be prepared to pay for it. If you cannot afford electricity make a fire or burn a candle. Freebees must stop.

In Cape Town it is charged to your rates so owner usually pays. It is really unfair if you are renting because the tariff has nothing to do with consumption so makes sense that it us attached to rates

These costs should be built into existing costs. Why all of a sudden is it added? It's almost as if they don't know how to run a business and can't afford their expenses, be it maintenance, infrastructure growth or exorbitant salaries, they haven't done the maths to run it sustainably. If it's pure greed, well then it's just wrong to lay that on the public who require electricity. Acting like freebies is a bad thing sounds like you have what you need, but others don't due to any number of reasons but including the facts that government has no intention of improving the livelihoods of the entire populace by using taxes correctly and educating people to think critically and make positive contributions in their communities. What is the point of civilization improving if we're not all moving together. Survival of the fittest, nature of the world? What is the point of the thing between our ears if we only care for ourselves?
