Regarding change - Jon Stewart is right and I would only reiterate that when you try to force people to do something, preach at them rather than work with them, or manipulate them, there will always be a defensive push back, even if that person thinks you're right. Until we stop making people wrong for eating meat, they are still going to eat meat. I was only able to hear The Game Changers movie because it didn't make me wrong for being a meat eater. I was never put into a place where I had to defend my actions. Overnight, I stopped animal products - had a couple of slip ups in the following weeks, FELT how awful I felt after eating meat, and became WFPB. I have never felt better and it's only been a month. All because I could finally hear the science. Thank you Jon, Tracey, Rip, and James Wilkes for being great with those you disagree with.

HONESTLY I can't agree more with Jon Stewart. We have to innovate our way through this. This way of eating has changed my cancer-ridden, food-addicted life. But it wasn't a straight shot to get here. It wasn't easy to jump on board and do this 100% correctly. But the ability to go out and get bowls that are compliant, the ability to get whole grains in an airport, these things have changed my life. The industry around this needs to be replaced. I have the greatest endocrinologist in the world (and pay all my respect to Robby and Cyrus and Mastering Diabetes after a pancreatic tumor) and I know the difference between foods and meds. And guess what...I work as a consultant to big pharma. :)

I believe the best way to get this out there to the masses is (to borrow a quote from a famous man) "Be the change we want to see in the world." You can't bring someone to a particular belief by beating them over the head with it. However, if they see you go from overweight, in pain, unhealthy to slimmer and healthy then they are going to want to know what you did and then maybe, just maybe, they will be willing to listen and open to what you have to say. Again, not everyone will. Not everyone will stop smoking. Not everyone will stop drinking too much. Not everyone is going to give up meat and dairy and junk food...but some will. Those are the ones we have to reach and I believe the best way to reach them is to be that change we want to see and share by example.

I liked this interview very much. Love their “How they met” story, very sweet & they still look like they have a tremendous amount of respect & love for each other especially after 25 years together. With that said, Jon does not look health in his face skin. I don’t mean to disrespect him, but, he does not look healthy. He looks vitamin & mineral deficient. he should defiantly get tested for deficiency. Also, I really like the free documentary on you tube called “super juice me”. It’s powerful, really give a good look into how doctors just keep writing Rx drugs without care for their patients & their patients keep getting sicker & sicker. This documentary also shows the power of a fresh veggie juice and how it will heal the body.

Im going to be honest (and this is someone who was an ethical vegetarian from age 11-22) that I think the best way to change the minds of most adults (kids are different- they have more compassion towards animal) is not to go the ethical vegan route (eg "its wrong to kill animals") but the whole foods plant based route (eg "all the massive health probles we are experiencing have an inexpensive ams easy solution" and "the way were eating currently is environmentally unsustainable"). Maybe it shouldnt be but there it is. And I think the best thing is to put up success stories like John, Kevin Smith, etc, etc, and let the success stories speak for themselves.

23:15 Jon Stewart makes some good points. It's very much a political football right now rightly or wrongly. Dr Greger et al. harp on about heart disease but until the problem hits you most people don't care let alone want to radically change their eating patterns to risk disease at some date way in the future. I think the answer should be something closer to what Pritikin Proposed. You keep animal products in the diet but only have a small amount something like a pound per week. This way you decrease your chance of degenerative disease radically. A lot of these plant based burgers aren't healthy at all high in salt, soy isolates and fat. Don't think you are improving your health by switching.

Perhaps the focus shouldn't be on prolonging life but on improving the quality of life. Live until 70 eating burgers---but what quality is that life. Change the narrative. Eat like that suffer like that. Nobody enjoys angina or diabetic amputations or sexual impotence or obesity or pain. Eating plants and getting to a proper weight removes most of the suffering a person might endure from degenerative disease. The actual length of life is arbitrary and unfathomable. People have a feeling of immortality until the end is nigh. People understand suffering because they have experienced it in one form or another. Focus on that.

I agree with Jon. The more you try to force something onto people, no matter how good it is, the more they will resist it on principle. This is basic human nature. It's also about economics. Eating healthy is far more expensive than eating processed garbage, and going full vegan is even more expensive...and that's if you even have access to fresh foods where you live. Then of course there's the corporate food economy than is a juggernaut of its own. I appreciate Rip's passion, but he's living in a bubble that most poor and working class Americans wouldn't even recognize. The horrific food system in America took decades to construct so it's not going to easily be fixed.

Thank you for not making fun of us celiacs. It really hurts me in my heart and makes me feel like I'm not human enough or good enough or strong enough when people mock my autoimmune disease. I've grown up as a native Texan where strength was valued and where the general culture says that gluten free stuff was considered for hippies and communists. Personally I had done research on celiac years ago so I knew it was a real thing but I never imagined I would personally be affected by it. Only to find out I had celiac at age 41. I actually went into a dissociative state because that just didn't seem to fit my personality or culture or anything. I felt weird going into my own home, driving my car, and interacting with friends and family because I felt that I wasn't me anymore. I had internalized some of the negative things people said about gluten free and I hated myself for being so weak and thought about suicide. Seeing the comedians that made me and other people who need to be gluten free the butt of their jokes made it worse. I felt like I was a walking joke of a person, someone who didn't deserve to live. Thankfully I've gotten beyond that. It's been a little over two years since I was diagnosed and I still feel self-conscious about it sometimes, like I feel like I have to say "No, I'm not one of THOSE gluten free people... mine is real!" And of course people laugh at me, mock me, leave me out of things, etc. I am holding out hope for a cure.

Rip I luv ya and admire your work at the fire house to get people to eat plant strong but 10 years to 50% of people being plant based is way too optimistic. In my world I see resistance. People can’t do it. That being said there are people who can learn it. We should be there for them.

The reason I agree with Rip that within 10 years 50% or less of Americans will be plant based is due to statistics. We all ready have a majority of millennial's going plant based and these are adults who are in child bearing years which means they will be raising plant based children. We have major food companies making plant based meats, eggs, dairy. Some of whom have been making/marketing animal products for decades. And their plant based sales have soared the last two years. Add in the issue of climate change and the negative connotations associated with the negatives of raising animals be it on the environment or how animals as property is akin to slavery and Americans may well become majority plant based in less than ten years. Fact is companies see money to be made selling plant based meats/eggs/dairy and in order to make more money they will (as Jon noted) be advertising more during high watched tv shows like football, basketball, hockey/car races etc. You already have TOP tennis players like Novak Djokovic, Venus Williams and Serena Williams who are plant based. And people in music, entertainment, social media influencers who are and will continue to attract more plant based lifestyle adherents.

'Too preventative-oriented...' Mind-blowing that that is not considered a good thing by the Houston cancer hospital in question (not that specific doctor, obviously). Is this blatant profit over people, or does it arise from some other concern?

I agree with Jon that you have to offer the "what's in it for me" factor approach, however with the reality that not everyone is going to join in. And honestly, since the internet, plant based and/or veganism has increased tremendously, so there is much progress and that process will continue. GOD will never allow one over the other but balance is possible. I wish everyone is Christian but the reality is, not everyone is going to become a Christian, and unfortunately some people will go to hell "needlessly", instead of choosing Jesus as their LORD and Savior.

@24:00 (...) in 10 yrs the percentage of people in US eating meat will go down from 93% to 50%... i don't think that's realistic. having people that eat lots of meat going to a moderate consumption rate sounds more doable.

Joe Larkin I think he’s just showing the ravages of years of eating bad and smoking. Eating plant based can greatly improve your well being, but I’m not sure it can reverse all the damage done by years of bad habits. I say this as a 70 year old woman who started this lifestyle at age 66.

There is a lot of history or examples in our past of times when people denied themselves luxuries to promote a common good. For example when we went to war. The same could be achieved with climate change. But how to convince our leaders we are in peril? People change there diet when they start to suffer. And we have meds and tv to distract from that. So we need more movies and tv shows and models of great living and dying. What does it look like to square the curve? I wanna watch that doc. To live past 70? We need a new story...
