After driving the 2023 Toyota GR Corolla, Automotive Engineer David Chao walked away in awe and inspiration as it's hard to believe that Toyota has designed and produced a car like this. David drove all 3 variations of the GR Corolla (Core, Circuit, and Morizo) both on the road and the track, and provides complete feedback of the car. David talks about both great things as well as attributes that Toyota needs to improve. This an Engineer's Full Review of the 2023 GR Corolla.
Automotive Press is owned and managed by David Koichi Chao, a global expert in the field of automotive evaluation, consulting, and strategy. David is known around the world as an authentic specialist of Lean Thinking or Toyota Production System. Born and raised in Japan, David has an engineering degree from University of British Columbia and post-graduate education from MIT and Harvard Business School in Boston.

I’m trying to get one, I’ve asked many dealers around the state I live in, not saying they were a reliable source but they told me that less than 100 of them will be sent to be sold in my state, but the problem of these dealers at least on my experience, they’re trying to shove the 4Runner up you know where, and not sell you the GR Corolla. But I talked to them and said if isn’t the GR Corolla Core, I’m not doing any business. 😂 all of them tried to convince me to get a 4Runner 😵‍💫

The only bad 👎 thing about the Toyota Corolla GTR is unfortunately Toyota will not be making enough of them to go around. Stand by for outrageous dealer mark ups and instantaneous aftermarket for profit resales. It's a very cool little pocket rocket 🚀.

I've had 4 Toyota pickups and a 2003 Matrix XR, the Matrix handled OK, but I have a 2014 Fiesta ST and I bought it new, it's on stage two Cobb Tune with a MBPR exhaust sticky Michelin tires, and can stay with anyone on a tight mountain road, it has 102,000 miles on it and still has the stock and I beat on it, at 74 years young my ST will be my last car, I just love it. Thanks for your review. I ordered a GR Circuit Edition and hope I can get it. I have a 800 HP GT-R but love a hot hatch too. Fun, economical, handy, and all year driving ability. Plus the motor is rock solid. I have an Infiniti AWD Q50 Red Sport and the turbos are a weak point. You need to drop the motor to replace them which is expensive. I'm on my 2nd set on my 2018. I will replace the Q50 with the GR Corolla and look forward to a manual hot hatch again. More nimble for sure. Having both my GT-R and the GR Corolla is just perfect.

As a GR yaris Circuit pack owner I can appreciate your comment regarding track va normal road experience. The Yaris feels borderline boring when driving under normal circumstances since it's just a tiny loud-interior car. But driven at 100%, which you can due to balance and grip, it's a rabid tiny beast! Strange how a tiny car can have audi-stavility when driving straight but Lotus agility when turning eh! Too bad the Corolla is larger, heavier and has a longer wheelbase. The Yaris is one step better at everything. Except interior noise being even more aluminium based. But hey, it won both Drivers and Team rally worlds this year! Mission avcomplished!!

Thought the same thing, USA getting the leftovers w the Corolla. But after driving it, and seeing reviewers comparing both, stock for stock……the gr Corolla is a better street car overall. Even ppl like Motive videos KZfaq channel, which has built one of the fastest GR Yaris’ in the world, recently said as much, upon driving one. Which was to his surprise as well……didn’t think he’d like it at all for the same reasons you listed.

Looks like a very firm ride, can you comment on the ride quality? Would you say that it's firmer than a Golf R? How would it compare to a Veloster N in terms of ride quality?
@ianholmquist8492
@ianholmquist8492 Жыл бұрын
I hear what you're saying man. But it seems to me that shopping for a compact sports car and asking it to have good ride quality is kind of like shopping for a drag race car and asking how well it handles in snow. Compact sports cars just due to dimensions of the chassis and the way the suspension has to be in order for the car to feel sporty, will usually have a rougher ride. The market they pitch these type of cars to doesn't usually care that much about ride quality either. If you want a smoother ride just get the regular non sporty version or a bigger car entirely. Not trying to be antagonistic i'm just making a recommendation. There are plenty of great riding cars out there just not many in the sport compact class.
@dougmaverick3287
@dougmaverick3287 Жыл бұрын
@@ianholmquist8492 well I test drove the Civic Type R and in Comfort mode it had a very good, comfortable ride, same with the Volkswagen Golf R, however the Ford Focus RS had a horrible ride quality, way too stiff. So just because it's a hot hatch does it necessarily mean it has to have a punishing ride. I'm just hoping that the gr Corolla has a comfortable ride similar to the Civic Type R and Volkswagen Golf R.
@Daveyboy_GolfR
@Daveyboy_GolfR Жыл бұрын
@@dougmaverick3287 yep you're absolutely right about the golf R with the dampers in comfort mode is super comfortable. Same with the Civic Type R. But with the Civic Type R, what I like about it is how the difference between R mode and comfort mode for the dampers is like night and day. Even more so than in my Golf R. So yes you're absolutely right that even the most dedicated hot hatches, in this day and age have the ability to adjust their dampers independently from the rest of the car, so we can leave everything else in full aggressive mode and leave the suspension in a more comfortable mode. I will say that as much as I love the N models from Hyundai, even when set to comfort mode, the dampers do soften up somewhat but they are definitely stiffer in full comfort mode then the Civic Type R and golf R which feel super compliant and comfortable when the dampers are set comfort mode.
@dougmaverick3287
@dougmaverick3287 Жыл бұрын
@@Daveyboy_GolfR So Dave do you think the GR Corolla's ride quality will be comfortable, similar to the Golf R and Type-R? I just hope it's not more firm than my Veloster N and definitely not as firm as the Focus RS which was torture. I guess I'm going to have to wait for all the automotive journalists to get a demo car for a week and they'll be able to let us all know how the GR Corolla rides. I'm currently selling my Veloster N because I've decided I want all-wheel drive traction, because with my car when I launch it hard I get horrible wheel hop in all conditions wet dry, same thing when I owned a GTI. Even in dry conditions when I drive it aggressively I get wheel spin in first and second and sometimes third gear. I want a car that I can step all the way down on the accelerator and get full traction that's why I've narrowed it down to either the golf R or the gr Corolla. I also definitely want a manual transmission.

Did you know that all engines and geartrains have been stupidly developed since day one? All of them are low efficiency, complicated, unreliable and expensive design. The reciprocating engines are terrible and unsuitable to generate power. Therefore if someone thinks that any of the existing vehicle is outstanding and mind-blowing. I'm sorry, that person hasn't seen the best yet. Cars are supposed to be simple, capable to serve us for at least 2 decades without much trouble and almost maintenance free. Also we don't need fossil fuels, hydrogen nor any batteries to power our cars. We can have free energy to move us around for as long as we live. Bottom line, the mainstream automotive industry is so backward, undeveloped and incredibly stupid to say the least. Are you guys proud of it? Not for me. Make a change asap.
