We complete our first drive in the brand new 2023 Toyota GR Corolla Hot Hatch. While everyone is buying RAV4 SUVs, many people want a fun, affordable car, and Toyota attempts to fix this. We detail the story and engineering behind this car and why you would shop for it compared to Civic Type R, VW Golf R, Subaru WRX, and Hyundai Elantra N.

@@savagegeese I agree this car wasn't intended for a giant road course. But it keeps people safe, and gives spec sheet drivers a comparison helping to sell the higher power cars. Would not want people to know you will never use 400 hp without having an anxiety attack about a cop taking you away and towing your car or by spending a ton of money on track days.

Being on the older side it’s a little sad that a company releases a hot hatch or sports car and everyone goes crazy. Up until the early 2000s basically every company had at least one sporty car. Shows how starved the market is now.
@TheGreektrojan
@TheGreektrojan Жыл бұрын
On the one hand I agree in general that there are fewer options but honestly, I think the internet has really distorted how hot a typical hothatch is actually supposed to be. Performance on average has increased but the bar keep rising on what 'performance' consists of. Look at what people are expecting of these cars (especially at their pricepoints) and its practically supercar levels from a decade ago. Its hard to build a viable 'sports car' at the budget level based on what enthusiasts deem as sports car performance.

Unfortunately production is so limited and the units coming to Canada (my dealer said maybe 100-200 cars for the whole country) and the specific dealer I pre ordered with, will be getting zero GR corollas until late 2023 at the earliest, and even though I was one of the first pre orders, I would be waiting until 2023/2024 for my car.This may be different in the states, and I can’t wait to see these things around as the more hot hatches the better, but for those up North, best of luck finding one of these

@@joshuaerickson2458 you’re looking at it from an idealistic perspective. Sure, but Toyota has to also manage its risk…there’s a fine line between wanting the car and actually buying the car. Selling out the GR Corolla represents a strong market and sends the right message (especially in this age of SUV’s and EV’s). It’s simple supply and demand…if Toyota continues to build the GRC (or/increases production) prices will eventually fall. But if you have to be the first one on the block with it, then you’ll just have to pay up. My point is, if the GRC continues to sell well, you’ll get yours too….you just have to be patient. As for current vehicle prices, I’m not even concerned. If you’re foolish enough to pay the dealer markup on any car, then more power to ya. I would just keep driving my clunker until the current market resolves itself. But if you have to buy a car, I would get a used one for less than $20k to simply get by till then…plenty of “cheap” ones that’ll last longer than this supply chain issue.🤪

As amazing as the engine and drive train are, combined with some more cooling, braking power, welds and adhesives doesn’t justify charging TWICE as much as a well equipped regular Corolla. I knew this car would be expensive but it’s ridiculously expensive. 42k for a Corolla that doesn’t have Recaro-quality seats, direct link shifter, padded interior touch points, or even half the creature comforts of a basic Mazda 3 Hatchback…I’m lost on this one. The Circuit is worth 35k and anybody paying over that isn’t shopping around because there are far more competitive products for 40 grand. And at 50 grand the Morizo is a joke. A Mazda Miata is a better track car for half the price because unlike the Morizo you can walk into a Mazda dealer and get one at MSRP. I suspect Toyota didn’t intend to charge this much but with the Focus and Impreza exiting the competition, they were emboldened to bend people over because without competition they know people will pay 50k-60k for a plastic Corolla with 300hp. It’s humbling they brought this car here, but I would have preferred the Yaris, which looks better, is faster, and costs 32k.

@@Anya-Prime Not necessarily. This is more of an engineering philosophy than anything else. For example, small parts tolerances can be in the tens of thousandths, so two use cases might be matching pistons that might be a half gram heavier with a ring assembly that's a half gram lighter to balance things out or figuring out how to match a part that's over spec by 5 micronswith another part that's under spec by 5 microns to get an assembly that's perfectly in spec, and so on. The same philosophy applies to larger tolerances as well, such as panel gaps and Since everything is recorded nowadays, even if you do need to replace parts, the likelihood is that the shop you go to will have access to the records of which parts with what tolerances are needed where. It's actually a very ingenious system that takes into account the fact that mass production, by its very nature, is not perfect and requires every product to have certain dimensional tolerances to allow for everything from thermal expansion to tool and mold degradation.
@Anya-Prime
@Anya-Prime Жыл бұрын
@@spdcrzy that makes sense, I figured it was referring to submillimeter tolerances and stuff, but I didn’t know this was a widespread philosophy. Also, you’re saying shops have access to this data for repairs and rebuilds? Like - dealerships and pro race car shops? Or my friendly bob’s auto down the street and enthusiasts with tech data logins? I’ve never heard of these records being available before

I heard (according to Jason from Engineering Explained - who heard it from the Chief Engineer for the GR Corolla) that the car actually drifts better in Front Bias and Track mode relative to Rear Bias mode on dry ground. This is because you're trying to get all 4 wheels spinning when you drift, so if you get the 30/70 split you kick the back out and the front then doesn't have enough torque, so it maintains grip and pulls you out of the drift. However it still might be a bit difficult to swing the rear out completely on dry ground. If you're in a low grip surface then you should use Rear Bias mode and you'll kick the rear out easily. And of course, we still got that manual handbrake, which cuts power to the rear axle when pulled. Thus, you'd want the car in Front Bias mode here so the front has as much torque as possible.
@HandsomeAlex25
@HandsomeAlex25 Жыл бұрын
I watched that video too, but I my couch commentator opinion from these reviews is that the feeling of rotation is enhanced in the 30/70 torque split vs the 50/50. This makes sense when you're within the limits of grip, as the rear axle will lock more on and off throttle (depending on how tight they have the rear LSD set), inducing additional weight transfer, aiding rotation. In a slip scenario (ie drift), yes the Toyota engineer and EE's video are correct, having both axles get the same torque will make breaking traction easier on throttle.
@veryrare7647

yea that makes no sense.... theres zero possibility that theyvare talking about the kind of drifting you do in a 240sx
@ProLeopardx1
@ProLeopardx1 Жыл бұрын
@@veryrare7647 They aren't, an AWD car drifts very different to a full RWD car. Unfortunately you can't change the bias to 100% rear due to how the clutch pack system works in the GR Corolla. This is a rally bred car though, so it's meant to be much better suited for more inclement weather and less prepped surfaces (dirt, gravel, snow, etc). A rear drive car like the 240sx would have way too much oversteer for a rally style course anyway. These are just different cars built for different purposes.
