Installing A Supercharger On My 2002 Honda S2000!
How Do Superchargers Work - • How Do Centrifugal Sup...

The Honda S2000 is without a doubt an exceptional drivers car. That doesn't mean there isn't room for improvement! This video captures the installation of a Science Of Speed Stage 1 Supercharger kit on a 2002 Honda S2000 F20C engine. The Stage 1 kit is good for about 100 HP at about 6 PSI of boost, and uses a simple FVM controller for fuel, VTEC, and MAP tuning.
Charles aka Humble Mechanic joined me for the installation, which was a fairly lengthy process (Science Of Speed estimates this to be a 14 hour job). There are certainly scenarios which are helpful to have a friend working with you, like removing the bumper, torquing the crank bolt, and torquing the supercharger pulley. While the engine bay was fairly opened up, we went ahead and replaced spark plugs, fuel injectors, idler & tensioner pulleys, as well as the fuel filter.

No, the thumbnail is *NOT* a turbocharger. It's the exact same centrifugal supercharger installed in the video (surprising number of comments about this). Also a lot of questions about why I chose to go supercharger vs turbocharger. I've explained the differences and why I chose this route in a video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/i7t2mZeflbO5oWw.html.

@rigormortis08
@rigormortis08 6 жыл бұрын
I think guitarfollower22 was assuming it's a V8, which it is. Ford turbocharged the 4 cyl version in the early 80s, of ai recall, and it wasn't very successful. After 2 yrs of going back and forth between supercharger and turbos, I chose turbos for a variety of reasons.
@rigormortis08
@rigormortis08 6 жыл бұрын
Engineering Explained I don't know? Does 2 yrs going back and forth between supercharging or turbo charging count? Lol. I spent about 2 months going through the boxes of the kit and mocking everything up. Another 3 months on the build itself (granted, only able to do weekends and outside in the Washington weather were factors.)The kit wasn't very good, required a LOT of cutting, bending, deleting, and relocating, and many parts didn't fit together from the same kit. Your kit seems very well done. I think "win" is defined by the lower amount of frustration. Lol

"While you're in there..." - words that can cause panic. I used to have a classic Mini as my daily driver - and I got it with a burned valve. So, the cheapest fix was to get a second hand head and put it on. Job done (in theory, anyway.) However...I figured I may as well buy the big valve head, as it wasn't all _that_ much more. And once the head was off and I was replacing it with one that flows better, it kinda made sense to change the cam (which that was on my to-do list for the future anyway.) But that meant I also needed to change to twin carbs, new intake manifold...re-jetting and synchronizing the carbs...new complete exhaust, manifold to tailpipe, recurve the distributor... $3500 and a week later - and my "burnt valve" was fixed. And those words _still_ give me nightmares. :-D
@Oetti
@Oetti 5 жыл бұрын
Each of these steps seems extremely straightforward...but to pull them all off, together, and come out with a functional and impressive modification such as a 100hp+ boost, is nonetheless an achievement. I say this because I am also a mechanical engineer, but my knowledge doesn't extend much past theory - Jason (with the help of an experienced mechanic) *actually* did it! I am impressed and always humbled; actions speak louder than words! Great work Jason and Mr. Humble Mechanic!

Haha, it's actually not all that much added weight. I weighed the entire kit, including all the boxes and such, and it was 60 lbs. That doesn't include the weight that was removed, and there was quite a bit of packaging. So with adding some fluids, I'd guess it adds around 40-45 lbs total.

Humble Mechanic! My go-to channel for VW questions -- and I always have VW questions. I own two 2012 VW TDIs, a SportWagen (essentially a Mk. VI Golf with a station-wagon body on it) and a Jetta. I do all the maintenance on those cars myself, with the help of *lots* of Humble Mechanic videos. He's awesome! Happy to see y'all collaborating on a project -- very cool!

You are going to love the conversion, I put a procharger on a customer car at 8psi it was putting out 350bhp at the wheels, really nice power delivery and the only thing that is effected is traction off the line and the first 2 shifts. to loosen the crank pulley bolt, juts hold the bar against the shock tower like you were doing nad then engage the starter to turn the mototr over and it will break loose the bolt. it worked for me on my miata.

I did this install on a comptech kit which is very similar to this kit. We didn't have to use the FPR but did add in a walbro 255lph fuel pump. I like how the after cooler is mounted sideways instead of up and down. Might have to look into that. Also heat helps with removing the crank bolt GREATLY.

i want to share my bad experience with my CRANK PULLEY BOLT...i bought Honda Del Sol and so as fresh owner i asked when the timing belt was changed, they said it has been done before like 7000km, so that was OK (later it was checked so it was true) but first time i hit the empty highway (yes i was speeding on empty highway and i used all my 7200rpms) suddenly i heard only one knock..i go off from gaspedal and nothing was happening, engine was running still (on neutral) after i checked steering if its working i checked if engine is reacting everything seems to be fine and i didnt know what hapend...i still came home on that (cause it might be just a rock you know) so i went another maybe 20km at least and just before i hit parking place i loose powersteering...after i checked the pulley belts i found out that my PULLEY is missing BOLT! i suppose that who ever was changing the timing belt he unscrewed the crank pulley bolt with a pneumatic pistol, so he even used that pistol to tightened the bolt back and obviously it was really bad idea when i ordered new bolt directly from Honda dealer i get manual where was written like in 5 steps how to correctly tightened the bolt back and there was warning to dont use any gun for that and one step included running engine so to warm crankshaft probably and after running the engine some time, torque the bolt even more...so please (anybody whos reading) dont underestimate the torque specs and please read manuals, they are really useful and contained some important facts (since i have done it according to manual i havent problem yet) - specially for Honda owners imagine you will loose some part spinning by 7000rpms what damage it could cause and not just to your car! another thing to the snapped bolt in video, there is really no need to have all the surface cause the tensions/stress are going to zero while you are moving to zero radius....torque is force multiply by distance - so thats why is not important that middle surface of that snapped bold but im sure you know that :) and my question is how did you damaged your crank pulley bolt? (i know you have to replace it every time you unscrew it but i thought you damaged it somehow in other way)
@Big2009Gee
@Big2009Gee 6 жыл бұрын
You don't need the crank pulley remover, torque gun will remove it way easier any way. Oh and first thing is swap that clutch out, it is just good enough for a standard s2000.

Regardless of how you remove the bolt, you still need the tool to torque the new bolt.

It'll be fine if he doesn't let it slip under boost and if it's in good shape. Everyone told me to change the clutch on my si when I supercharged it but i don't drive it mega hard most of the time and neverrrr let it slip under boost... If I goof up shift timing I just let off the throttle immediately. It's been good for 70k miles 125k on the clutch..(10psi max).
@Marks-Garage

I've had stock clutch for over two years with 350bhp on the HKS supercharger kit and its never slipped once. One thing i will say is that you will very quickly cook your aftercooler coolant with that tiny radiator. Might be worth either fitting a bigger one or getting a decent spal fan on it pulling the heat out of the coolant. Great video!

I was actually wondering why Honda would have developed a part that required such high torque setting numbers in the first place. Seems to me if you have to start using speciality torque wrenches with additional leverage to do it up they didn't design it right in the first place.

Okay, you guys, BRAVO! You nailed the hit on the head (purposely phrased). I felt comfortable that you went to the computer first before you started messing with all the other gobbledygook associated with a superb supercharger system installation. I may even watch it again and take notes! That's just my nature. As far as not going to the parts store, did the kit come with all the articulated hoses, zip ties, and hardware or did some young packrat engineer just happen to have it all stashed away in his shop? In addition, did the parts store find a few rocks and twigs on their shelves? But, sure, the kit is quite inclusive. And, what a beautiful supercharger it is. You guys work well together as a team. Every good mechanic needs an industrious engineer around as a side kick (snicker, snicker). Well played. What a dream shop, and clean engine you had to work with. I'm jealous. Follow the yellow car road. Hmm, strange thing to see a bearded mechanic working with an obvious yuppie city slicker. Yet, I enjoyed the contrast. And, you are so honest to admit that this is not a video for most do-it-yourselfers. But, hey, I like it and I'll return to bug you with some more of my sarc..., err, helpful comments. Jeff
