We barely have any defensive midfielders (JWP isn't a defensive minded player). Phillips has good general fitness and is fit now, he has to go as it only him and Rice. Maguire has to go for the experience and he's been there twice already. It's important to have an experienced defence

Dier has been one of the most in form england cbs for spurs over the last year. He plays a similar system at spurs and thrives in that middle cb role. If anything it has to be maguire who should be out the guy doesn't even start for united while dier has started nearly every minute for spurs

Every Southampton fan has said he's been awful this season. Like genuinely their worst player. We've also never seen a game with a good Rice-Prowse partnership for England before, even when he was playing well so he wouldn't be trusted in the double pivot anyway. The people most outraged by Ward Prowse not being in the squad are people who don't watch him week in week out.
