@jprt1990

@saticharlie
@saticharlie 4 жыл бұрын

Everywhere the captions translate the Francophone as saying "Go to hell" he's actually saying something more along the lines of "Eat shit" (literally it's "go shit" but the sentiment is more akin to "Eat Shit"). Just a note on one of the more repeated mistranslations but there are others and there particularly annoying as a bilingual FrancoOntarienne forced to listen while reading something different in the captions. BTW regarding the current climate emergency you DEFINITELY live in a conservative bubble, I'm 10yrs older than you and very much connect with the issues Thomas mentions in this regard. ALSO, about Canadians not seeing federal meddling in provincial projects from a provincial lens you need to connect with some Northern Ontarians to learn that this isn't a purely Québecois issue as many of us in Northern Ontario have strong feelings about federal help regarding Toronto projects while refusing to do their part in the same way in N.O.

This was really cool. I live and grew up in Alberta (dad in the oilpatch all that stuff) so I've always had a very myopic view of Quebec. The sort of stereotype around it being this weird wonderful land of maple syrup, poutine and a big winter fun time party full of strange people who I'm supposed to hate and who all apparently hate me. My understanding of Quebec politics is vauge and confused at best so it was pretty awesome to get a glimpse into Thomas' perspective and JJ's exposition. There is a lot of what he says that I disagree with, even though I am, by Alberta standards at least fairly left-wing myself particularly on social issues but I think one of the big problems that exists perpetually in politics and seems to be growing is a nasty tendency to demonize those we disagree with. Human nature, sure, but we seem to be going through one of our periodic rough patches right now so it was really interesting to see the two of you carry out a relatively civilized debate in a rather innovative format.

@@kgd9725 Antwerp is by far the largest port in Europe and Belgium sits on the mouth of the Rhine River, which is the most important transport artery in Europe. It's a very important piece of territory that's situated right in between three great powers (Germany, France, & the UK) and one regional power (The Netherlands). Belgium exists primarily because the countries around it don't want any of their neighbors to control that strategic piece of land. It's so important that Britain's reason for entering World War 1 was that Belgium's neutrality was violated.

Aight, it's history time. During the 70s, the FLQ was so infiltrated by the RCMP that a police captain famously said 'In 1972, the FLQ was us'. Check out Commission Keable, which lead to 17 RCMP officers being jailed for state terrorism. Also we know of that because an officer blew his hands off while posing one of the bomb mentionned around 3:30. He then said "I did much worse thing in the name of the RCMP"... which wasnt the best thing to say. Guy probably though the organisation was untouchable. Anyway, it's a great piece of trivia, especially in a conversation where people try to discredit the independantist movement with the FLQ.
