Such a shame to paint those beautiful old wood floors black. I would have lightly stained them a bit darker true-brown (e.g. walnut stain), bring out the highlights of the real wood. A bit shabby, a bit old? That's perfect!

Pretty, but you should have left the floor light, and had a dark rug. That would make it look bigger.

I can't put my finger on it, but there's something so utterly charming about Julie. She could be talking about ANYthing, and I'd want to listen. Kudos to the design of this room; it's sophisticated yet still retains a very country feel.

Energy, positivity, “can do” attitude and lack of airs and graces make her special. Her hubby is very endearing too, as is Nestor. I was going to ask her whether her abundant energy was due to yoga but maybe it is the AG powder. I wonder if it would have the same effect on me, if I could manage to drink it.

Black floor is going to be a nightmare to keep clean will show up every bit of dirt and dust. On camera up close the floor really doesn't look good you can see all the different brush marks going in different directions and some type of white probably dust on it. It's a daring choice. But love love the rest of the cottage it's amazing 😊.

I love everything about that dining room decor, except the black floor. As much is covered with that jute area rug, the remainder could have been left natural. No one would expect that a floor that old would be unscathed by age. If painting truly is necessary (I’m not there, I cede to the experts), surely a paint colour less likely to suck the light out of that room might have been a better option.

Plus the dark wool Glencoe plaid curtains make the room feel “heavy”. It’s more something you’d find in a hunting lodge. When I think of fairy tale cottage, I think of fabrics and wallpapers in chintz or big cabbage roses. More shabby chic. The colors used in this dining room white , black, and green are just not cottagey to me.

I wish Julie would trust herself, her love of the history of the family and her wonderful good taste in all things, instead of a decorator who doesn’t seem to have the commitment to preservation. Just my opinion but is making my stomach a bit sick.

As lovely as the cottage is, it was lovely to see your son, Nestor, whose accent fluctuates between Brit ...and States ... It is easy to be excited by a project, but be careful. Slow down. So easy to get tired and ill ... and no one wants that!

I disagree, the floorboards looked great when sanded and I would have put maybe a Honey stain on them with a polyurethane coating on top. The tables against the wall are nice but the one where the window is should be centered under the window, it would look much better, more balanced and concentric the drapes are beautiful and love the hint about training them to stay in nice straight pleats.

I totally agree about the floor. If you ever watched 'Rehab Addict', Nicole Curtis brought the worst floors back to life and were always coated with a polyurethane coating and always looked fantastic 👌 However I love the dining room, especially the plain mantle above the fireplace ❤
@stevenkaskus6173
@stevenkaskus6173 10 ай бұрын
@@noeleneroodt783 I just wish the mantle were just a little more beefy and I think the fireplace surround would have been a definite hit and more country cottage with a stone surround. Yes I used to watch Rehab addict and she did amazing work and brought floor's back that looked so much worse than these. I do love the dining room too and what they did with the table.

This is amazing. And the cottage is so nestled within all of those trees, like a little secret treasure, waiting to be discovered! Beautiful interior color, very soothing, and those lampshades by Pookie(?) are fire! The black floor is great, really grounds everything very subtly (here in the states, on a couple of my own furniture pieces, I've used a wax that's actually used on _bowling alleys,_ so I know what a good protectant can do!) Well done all!

The dining room turned out beautifully. Is the wood trim for the baseboards and around the ceiling new too? The door and cabinet look wonderful. It is good to have Nestor and hopefully your other kids help around the estate so that that they can experience the time and energy involved in restoring and maintaining the estate. Their sweat equity just like yours, will make them appreciate all that goes into not just maintaining the estate but making it better. My grandpa got us kids involved in different projects at their summer farm, we learned a lot, had fun and got to spend time with him and my grandmother. Julie, you and Luke along with your team of hard working and talented people are really building onto and adding value to what Luke's parents and grandfather did at Mapperton. what I would have done about painting the floor black, yes to the paint and yes to the black...BUT....I would have "cut" the paint 70/30.... 30% water, the paint would not look as opaque and hard....it would have a look of many layered stain....still dark, it would even out the uneven color of the floor boards, but let the wood show through...the solid black shows foot prints, any dust on shoes, it will show...ok for a rental but a daily live in situation would be tedious dust mopping constantly.

What i have done for guest rooms is to construct room dividers made from large pieces of corrugated cardboard. Room dividers can stand on their own when unfolded. When I come across a packing box large enough to make the "boards" then glue them together to fold with additional paper. You can decrease the thickness of the paper toward the cut ends by sanding it slightly so that you never can see the mend. I either paint them over or decoupage. It gives the guest a space to hide behind when dressing. They are not heavy like wood. A lot of the paint i get through give away offers in Craigslist free category.

The green marbleized lamp shades are First Class! From afar, they almost look like a Morrisonian wallpaper pattern. Does the fireplace work? Perhaps a flaring of Minton tiles around the opening and on the sidewalls of the hearth? What a lovely place for a long weekend! Lucky are those who have able to make reservations already! The Norman meadows sure are lush and offer a great view of the lonely hills in the distance with specks of hamlets afar. What a huge amount of effort and muscle to make all the projects come to fruition.

When you paint anything in high contrast colour, it's worth it to tape. Otherwise I never do. Even when you tape you need to make sure the overlapping tape has a smooth transition. Shit like this pisses me off. One other thing I learnt from a pro was when you have a textured ceiling, with edges uneven and you have a dark colour on the wall, the best thing to do is tape, say an inch down from the ceiling. You bring the ceiling colour down an inch and then you get a clean line of the dark wall colour. Hope that helps. I've seen it done and the straight line makes a huge difference.
