I find that many comedians were English majors, and they say its a useless major. Yet, to be a successful comedian you gotta be a talented writer, storyteller and effective communicator which are skills English/writing degrees cultivate.
@h.9089
@h.9089 Жыл бұрын
The point he was making was that English graduates were unemployed, not whether or not they learned something important. Maybe the reason why they chose to be comedians is because they never got any success as an Eglish major in the first place.
@oliviagrace9983

That’s great and all, but I would say that, overall, an English major does not provide a most of the skills that are essential to be a successful standup comedian. Most of the important elements of standup comedy involve a natural talent for things like comedic timing, delivery (tone, body language, facial expressions, etc.), and simply being funny (a quality that is difficult to define, but is a gift that is innate in most comedians). While writing, storytelling, and communication are also important traits that can be learned and improved upon, most individuals do not have the natural talent to be comedians, rendering us, as Michael said, unemployable.

In 2008 the country was in a recession. Unfortunately I live in Michigan which managed to upgrade its situation to a full scale depression. Since I had a class a CDL I decided to take a truck driving job. Okay maybe decided is a bit strong. It was the only job available and even that was for a small company headquartered out of state . I was eating dinner at a relatively nice truck stop when a conversation began with another driver. Drivers tend to have a wide range of backgrounds so topics vary widely. The subjects of this encounter were a little bit about the Russian revolution, followed by a long detailed discussion of George Orwell. My excuse for having a background in useless information was that I'm a very fast reader but not very good at choosing material. His excuse was much worse, he actually had a degree in literature. After a while he said something I'll never forget. "A degree in literature is a real truck driver's degree. That's because after you finish you're only qualified for two jobs. Those are teaching literature which doesn't exist or driving a truck. Of course the truck driving part only works if you already knew how to drive a truck before you entered college."

My niece majored in Fine Art. The only job she could find was in an Art museum for $8/Hr. Fortunately she had a minor in English, so she found a job as a substitute teacher. Huh? Huh? Think about that! Huh? (JK)
@swine13
@swine13 3 жыл бұрын
To be fair though, what was she expecting after majoring in _fine art?_ it's not like you pass the course and you become Michelangelo. In fact most of the people that major in fine arts probably aren't even very good artists themselves, and the kinds of available jobs certainly aren't "paint the Sistine chapel" or anything. It's either art appraisal, which requires a keen eye and a good memory, or what she was doing - sit in an art museum for peanuts. Thats why, if students are going to be forced to go through this shitty system, they really need some guidance on what majors to study. Its hard enough to get a decent job with a _useful and relevant degree_ , let alone if all you have is something with little to no real world application and a bunch of debt. Im still paying off debt that I wouldn't have now, if I'd just had like 10min of decent guidance from someone who didn't have their own agenda to try to vicariously live through me. Alas.. this is not the world I know.

Reconsider, unless your goal is being a teacher (in that case change your major to teaching). Otherwise do something worth the cost of college. Like, dental hygiene, nurse, engineer (civil, mechanical, or structural) accountant (specialize in taxes), computer science (graphic design/web development). That gives you a few ideas to research. Look around you, and think what types of jobs survive long term despite economic depression, pandemics.
@user-jc1xl5lj1t
@user-jc1xl5lj1t 3 жыл бұрын
@@canelami1285 Those are all great majors, but they're all STEM. I don't dislike STEM, nor do I suck at it, but I just don't enjoy it all that much. I love the humanities and want to pursue a humanities major, but I also want to be able to find a job after college (even if it's not super high-paying--just enough to live by and save a little). Honestly I don't really know what to do. Teaching is not my goal in life, so although I am considering it as a career, I don't want to focus my entire major on Education as opposed to English/Linguistics/Literature.
