This is one breed that is not overly aggressive but can be a bit clumsy due to poor dressage. It is very important to start dressage from an early age to get everything in order! English Mastiff is a slightly slower dog and slower to learn, so you will need more patience when training him! Good Luck

My English Mastiff is 13 years old. He still takes walks with me, around a mile or so 2 to 3 times a week. He is 215 lbs, and so sweet, gets along with other dogs, but once on our property, there is no better watch dog. He is unbelievably aggressive. We feed him chicken breast, rice and good quality dog food in every meal. I think it is why he is so old and going strong. I know they don't live long, and just pray I get more years out of him. He is my best friend. Though I love all breeds, especially the larger ones.

If you came to see him in the street, park or most any setting he is a big lap dog, and friendly. If you tried to get into my vehicle when parked, up my driveway, or yelled or grabbed at my wife or I, he would let you know it won't happen. Strangers coming up driveway are met with a dog who's head is at the window of they're car as they approach. He is barking and growling and will not let them up driveway. And no one has ever made it out of their car towards the house. Once he knows you, he's your best buddy.

haha, love it. You would be surprised. My female seems like she is scared of people, she keeps her distance, and if a stranger comes at her, she backs off while barking. But when someone yelled at my wife, she was in attack mode and their was no mistake about what would happen if he continued his verbal attack. Trust these dogs love their masters and will defend.

The only time my girl got aggressive was with another female Mastiff we ran into at a ball game. They were doing the normal sniff around each other and mine just nipped her outa nowhere. She’s never done that with any other dog. We did rescue her from a breeder that was having problems with the other dogs attacking her though. I bet it just brought back memories of that.

This true. But if there is a situation like someone would really trying to hurt one of the mastiffs owners/family. Dont know what would happen, but i dont think mastiff would just watch it happening and not to do anything. Hope there never is going to be situation line that tho.

Good comment. I take comments into account. This dog is my lifeline. I am a veteran, I sleep sound at night after many years, cause he and his sister have my back. I hope I get 18 years outta him. I have never heard of one past 10 or 12, so I will be blessed of whatever I get. I will hate, hate to see him go. We have house in woods with around 10 acres. He loves trips in the van. And of course, if he smells meat, or gets through drinking water, have a towel ready, he can slime pretty nasty.
@Sandypaws55
@Sandypaws55 5 жыл бұрын
I know what you mean about slime. We've done Dane rescue for about 12 or 13 years now and some times have had as many as six in the house at a time. You can imagine the slime. Some Danes don't drool much at all but on the otherhand, the others make up for it. We are fostering an EM right now. She's not too bad but does drool after drinking. I call them icicles when I find them hanging. We have found "slime" icicles even hanging from our trees in the back yard. I've often said, if you have a Dane or English Mastiff you MUST have a since of humor!! Good luck, Larry, with your wonderful EM. 13 yo and 215 lbs., wow!! You're doing something right my friend, most likely several somethings. Keep up the good work and give those Mastiffs a giant hug for me.

English Mastiff is the king of dogs, father of all the breeds, yet it's going extinct to the point it can no longer be shown at crufts because the tiny gene pool available would mean you would inevitably have to inbreed.

@@lodii7246 just because you have a very poorly socialised english mastiff (if it is an english mastiff as you just said mastiff) or one that has been bred with individuals of poor temperament doesn't mean that they are typically like your dog. Most aren't like that. They are protective of their families and are usually great with children (however should always be supervised) due to thier gentle natures. If socialised they are ment to aloof with strangers, not outwardly aggressive.

@@natureboy7766 Eh tail can be docked for a number of reasons in the UK no dogs are meant to be docked for show purposes. If it's a hunting dog,police dog etc then it can be done. It could have been docked for a working purpose. It looks more English mastiff than Boerboel to me. I have a boerboel and they are typically far more athletic than the English Mastiff. Then again with poor breeding and being fat its hard to tell sometimes.

Daughters.Of. Odin That behavior right there is pack defense, which is to be expected with any Mastiff, let alone an English. Him getting in between you isn't seeing the person as a threat, it's a defensive and possessive posture (meaning he's telling the person "he's mine, back off) If you want to train him not to do so, good luck! All I suggest is enjoy such an attachment while you can!

Daughters.Of. Odin That's when you can show him play fight from a real fight; let the dog get in the middle of you two in calm moderation and show him that nothing bad is coming from it, but if he insists on defense: you may simply have to put him in a different room.

Your right. My mastiff is very protective, but once he realizes no threat, he is good. He will not allow grandkids to argue or fight. He will get between them and push them away with his head and bark. HIs bark usually does the trick. People who don't own them seem to think they are not aggressive. I have had 3 now. I live in southern Oregon with many meth heads coming to peoples property stealing. No one has ever made it up the drive way, the power company has CAUTION for aggressive dogs, yet our UPS driver who knows them can deliver packages at will. In public they are great. But I would never just let a stranger walk up them unless wife or I are there to tell his its ok. He is the best protection dog I have ever had, well right there with a Akita/ Bull Mastiff cross, and another Mastiff/Rott cross.
