This video and worksheet explain what a paragraph is and the three main parts of a paragraph. Learners practice defining the purpose of each part of a paragraph and identifying examples of topic sentences, detail sentences and conclusion sentences. This video was created by a public school teacher for ESOL students studying mainstream English curriculum.
This video includes subtitles in English, Spanish, and Simplified Chinese, as well as auto-translate in many languages. To view the subtitles and transcript, follow these steps:
1) Click CC to turn on subtitles.
2) Click the settings icon (to the right of CC), and choose the language you need.
3) To view the transcript, click the three dots (...) below the video and to the right. Then, click Open Transcript, and choose the language.
4) Once the transcript is open, you can copy and paste it into Word or other documents.

Hi Victor, thank you so much. You will pass that exam before I finish--the videos take a month or two...I searched and found a link that explains the structure very well with excellent, clear examples: www.rubenvalero.com/english/content/cae-essay Read each prompt, then the example essay. Focus especially on the topic sentence of each paragraph in the example essay--that sentence tells what is in that paragraph.

One doubt, you said that the Conclusion sentence does not gives new details. But in the sentence, "As a result of her hard work, Anna is one of the best students in school", gives additional information that she is hard working, which was not provided earlier. Then how is that a Conclusion Statement and not a detail statement? Also, there is one more detail that she is one of the best students in school, which was not conveyed earlier. Coz just being excellent does not means she is one of the bet, if all other students are also excellent. This is my confusion. Please help.
@EnglishUnits
@EnglishUnits 5 жыл бұрын
Manish, this is a good point! I should have said it this way: "In the conclusion we can’t add a completely new detail or idea." So, in the example of Anna, we can’t say something in the conclusion like this: “Anna is a great student and a wonderful person” because “wonderful person” is a completely new detail. It is not linked to anything before it. But also, in the conclusion, we can't repeat the wording of any previous detail too closely! So we have to change the wording of the fact/idea/detail that we reference in the conclusion. One way to do this is to make the wording more general, stronger, or show a slightly new side of that detail/fact/idea-but not so new that it becomes a whole new fact or idea. So, in the example conclusion, we do this with two ideas: #1 Anna does her homework everyday…this is an example of working hard. So, using “hard work” in the conclusion is more general wording. This is fine-because we’ve made it clear how she worked hard (through homework, getting herself ready on time, etc). #2 Anna is an excellent student…this idea was introduced the topic sentence. The conclusion makes this idea even stronger by saying she’s one of the best students in school. I do see what you mean that there is a new detail due to the comparison with other students-since this detail builds on an idea strongly supported and already previously introduced, that’s ok…a new detail that would NOT be ok would be to say “Anna is also one of the kindest students in school.” (But my original wording did not include this nuance--so I am glad you asked!)
