To answer your questions: 31:50 The person who told Viper about Nolan and Calgara was the Shandorian elder (the one who wears a headdress and has a staff). The story of their unfulfilled final promise was likely one passed down from generation to generation. This was very quickly shown prior to the flashback so you might have missed it. 32:20 By the end of Skypiea, you've been introduced to all three main classifications of Devil Fruits: Zoan (animal-based e.g. Chopper's human human fruit), Logia (element-based e.g. Enel's lightning powers), and Paramecia (a catch-all category e.g. Buggy's chop chop fruit). 32:43 The gigantified South Birds were the ones who saved Chopper, Ganfall and Pierre. However, they're obviously NOT the ones who repaired the Merry Go--that's a spoiler for a future arc. 33:10 This was answered at the beginning of the arc. If I remember correctly, the waver was an old model and the dial of that model was powerful and no longer in use on Skypiea, hence why Conis' father was surprised to find it in the waver. Love your reaction/review as always. Keep up the great work! Also, keep in mind that the next arc Long Ring Long Land is supposed to function as a breather arc and is therefore quite, uh, not up to usual One Piece standards. But the saga after that is widely considered a peak and major turning point in the One Piece story, so your patience will definitely be rewarded.

Yo, fantastic write-up! I actually had forgotten about those giant south birds, but doesn't Usopp see the Klabauterman during this arc? Not going to say any more because I know it's important down the line, but I thought they explained how the Merry got fixed to how it looked before the flying modifications. Oh, and just so you know, I think you wanted to use e.g. instead of i.e. in those examples. e.g. is "exempli gratia" meaning "for example", and i.e. is "id est" which means "that is"; it's a way of introducing a reiteration of a previously made point.

To add to your comment regarding Noland and Calgara: The part of the flashback that shows what happens to Noland after he leaves Jaya is presented to us readers, but most likely completely unknown to the Shandians. Even if someone who knew the picture book had visited the Sky Islands, it is very unlikely they realised that this was (part of) the island from the book, much less met the Shandians and told them about it.

In my opinion, the reason some people don't like Skypiea can be split into two main reasons: First, it doesn't appear on first reading to add much to the overall main story, because it is by necessity isolated from the rest of the world. There's no bounty increase, and there's no consequences outside of Skypiea for the Straw Hat's victory. The biggest things that are immediately relevant are Blackbeard's appearance and intent, and the revelation that Roger not only reached Skypiea as well but was able to decipher that Poneglyph and leave his own message alongside it. Now, with context of future events, we can look back at Skypiea and draw a lot more relevance from it, but this was context deliberately withheld at the time. There's a lot of that in this series, where future events retroactively improve or redefine past events. Secondly, the saga following Skypiea is regarded as one of the best sagas in the series, even now, and it was a reasonably common piece of advice to skip it and get into the meat of a really good main story section. To me this is like saying "yeah skip Aragon Gimli and Legolas pursuing the Uruk-Hai to try and rescue Merry and Pippin, just have them go straight to Edoras and meet Gandalf there, you definitely didn't miss anything important. how's Gandalf alive? don't worry about it.". But it was advice that was given out, and some people did only go back to it at a later time or leave it entirely.

I have to admit you're totally right. In my original approach to one piece 15 years ago, I had watched the start (for how much I could follow weekly though cable TV) of one piece and most arcs occasionally up to the Bellamy story. Stopped a bit (because the release was halted in my country) and a bit after it's return I came back in exactly because my friends told me the arc after skypea (not to spoil) was happening and to skip directly to it. This was 15 years ago or so.

Fun fact, Jimmy (don't worry, this isn't a spoiler for anything that's come up in the story yet, I just think it's cool), when Nami is reading Noland's logbook, she mentions that it was written 400 years ago in "the Age of Kaien 1120" which means the current story is taking place around the year 1520! The Skpiea hate is a holdover from people who watched/read it week to week. Technically, one of the lowest points, if not the lowest point of One Piece's popularity. Sometimes, Oda's storytelling style just doesn't translate to a weekly format. (See dressrosa/whole cake). You'll notice the arcs with the fewest shonen tropes are the ones the community tends to be divided on.

My main problem with Skypiea is the villains, i can only remember Enels name, the rest was so forgettable. I dont even remember who fought who. Before the side villains was introduced and after they where defeated was good, the problem is the anime took way too long with the fights. Other than that Skypiea is a fine arc, but not as good as Alabaster

Luffy ringing the Shandorian Golden Belfry Bell for all to hear, fulfilling Kalgara's final wish, then his shadow casted on to the clouds for Cricket to see, proving the City of Gold is real, is such a high point in the series!

So the Devil Fruits have been categorised by now in the story, but just to break it down: Logia - allows the user to turn their body into an element, such as lightning, fire, sand, smoke. Zoan - allows the user to turn their body into an animal, and into a human/animal hybrid (or in Chopper's case an animal/human hybrid). Paramecia (Viz translates it as Paramythia) - every other Devil Fruit ability. Unlike the other two which obviously improve abilities in a fight, these ones can sometimes be less empowering. Let's say you had the ability to conjure clothes like Piccolo in Dragon Ball - sure it's sometimes useful outside of combat, but it's got no actual applications in a fight unless the user is really smart about it and also chooses to figure out how to apply it instead of just using their existing strength.
@YetiCoolBrother
@YetiCoolBrother 11 ай бұрын
Paramecias can be broken down into soft sub categories, so you have ones like Luffy & recently Bellamy that modify your body, ones like Mr. 3 that let you emit a substance, and then one other subcategory I don't think has been shown up to Skypeia.

The Noland flash back for me is the biggest highlight of this arc. The tragedy of Noland's tale is rich with cherry picks from real history that make it feel just as real. I love how it calls back to jaya and cricket and just seeing how good of a guy Noland was and how his lineage in cricket too is a good guy and how they both are kind of devoting their lives to prove their dreams are real similarly to the strawhats. When Luffy rings that bell in the anime, and it cuts over to cricket hearing the bell and tears swelling in his eyes really feels like the Ultimate climax to the arc. I also agree with your dislikes about the arc. The priests in particular could have been given more motivation and more character. I feel like with all of them they kind of are just enels gang, but they don't rlly have any loyalties or comradery with him. They more so serve him out of fear and because of that we don't get a sense of their history with him if there is any. Maybe it's because their goal is just survival but they really didn't have any motivations. Also Luffy being stuck in the snakes belly for a good chunk of the arc seemed like a waste in my opinion. I get that oda wanted to keep Luffy out of the fight until when the story called for it but I feel like there was a better route he could of taken. This arc is great otherwise tho, and I think as time goes on my appreciation for it will grow

Also, Nami's Climatact is equipped with dials, Usopp says he used them to perfect her weapon. Nami's waver has wind dials. I think theres nothing inherently wrong with skypia’s story. The only issue is its stretched out a bit, a lot of beats just go on for a lot longer then they should. Luffy in the snake, climbing the beanstalk, the flashback is great but is also so long for what its trying to convey.

Ah, the Skypiea saga. A story of a man on an execution stand, whose final words sent people to the seas in search of a treasure. A story of those who inherited that man's will, ever searching, never yielding. Nope, I can't see how this fits into the overall story of One Piece at all. But spoilers below... A story of a nation high above all others, its rulers claiming to be gods. A story of destruction raining down from the heavens at a whim, and of people living in fear of tyrants they can't fight against. A story of one so-called god meeting his natural enemy and being laid low. A story of an ancient massive beast, longing for the past to return. A story of the sound of music signalling freedom.

This arc to me is amazing. I loveee the idea of an island in the sky. It really shows how vast and adventurous the OP world is and there are so many things, and many places that need to be discovered. Each place has its own story and to experience all of that is the meaning of this adventure. The moment when Luffy rings the bell and his shadows shows up in the sky- which connects to the beg scene of giant shadows is really giving me chills.

i can't wait for your reaction for the next arc (and especially future arcs)! i really love your thematic breakdowns of each arc, which, for me, is the real true meat of one piece. always keep an eye out for those themes, as they, in my opinion, encapsulate what one piece (as a manga) strives to be, and what oda tries to get across. of course not without few shortcomings here and there, it's hard to divorce people from their upbringings. but the universals speak to the truth.

Great review Jimmy! I personally loved Skypiea cause it felt like we visited another world and I think there is a bit of this awe and wonder and we will feel it once we begin the great age of space exploration as humans and what we felt when the grewat age of exploration of the world oceans was. Take long ring long lang (next mini arc) very lightly as it is just dumb fun (at least thats how I did it and had a lots of fun) and then you are into what some say is the best or one the best arcs of One Piece. I'm waiting for another review of yours and with your buddy Andrew :D Cheers!

Good takes as usual. While I agree that Skypiea does not progress the overall story that much, what I enjoyed about Skypiea is just the fantastical adventure it is, being an isolated island in the sky where most people dont even know it exists. It perfectly encapsulates the essence of what being a pirate means to Luffy and the others. Being free, not caring about what others say about your beliefs and just chasing the adventure.

im really looking forward to your future videos, i bought almost every one piece book around the time you posted your first video, and even though a lot of things have happened in my life and im reading them slowly i really appreciate and anticipate your videos. for reference i have watched all 1070 one piece episodes twice and its by far my all time favorite series, and i just got to alabasta in the manga. personally i liked enel more than crocodile, crocodile was more mysterious and overall super interesting, and maybe this is mainly an anime take since i tend to love the anime's more than the manga but the sheer presence of enel every time he was on screen was mind boggling, everything was so tense, he was in control not to mention oda mentioned in an interview that enel would have had a 500 million berry bounty compared to crocodiles 80 million in my opinion you can really feel the power difference, also his devil fruit is freaking awesome.

I always look forward to your insights. A lot of fans say this, but its always fun to witness other people experience One Piece. It’s not a perfect series by any means, but I think it’s safe to say that majority of us fans experience this wave of emotions during arcs that bring the fandom closer (minus all the toxicity). Skypiea is one of my favorite arcs, but I do agree it had its dull moments and understand the issues that some people may have with it. Anyway, I’m looking forward to your future videos, and I hope you don’t have to feel compelled to love and compliment every aspect of One Piece (some fans do get very protective of this series lol) because we all have our opinions, but the common denominator is that despite it all, we appreciate and enjoy this story.

Very interesting! Thanks for the video! I like skypiea. I don’t hate it, I don’t love it as much as others but it’s just because some arcs are just shining too much. but I love it a lot like all the arcs in one piece! I had no idea people hated it until I these few weeks as I started watching one piece videos xD somehow never thought of watching those before. I think what I loved most of all was Noland’s backstory, that story was so phenomenal it made me absolutely love the whole story. I also loved a lot how different the straw hats were traversing the forest, and the dumb song luffy sang in the anime. I absolutely love the history! That poneglyph was very very important much later in the story. I love the sky shadows! Man I actually cut out luffys huge sky shadow to stick it to my huge paper folder for art back in school. And I love enel’s face lol it was priceless and became very iconic, later when other characters do that face still enel comes to mind. Oda sensei is genius for me I love how you paced the video with negativity at the start! I think that was great choice! :D somehow the whole after taste remains very positive because you finished on a positive note and it’s great! Can’t wait for next arcs!

A little recommendation. In the anime right after Skypia is the only filler arc which the community considers to "might just be canon as well" since it's just really entertaining and not breaking any rules of the canon in any way, while adding onto some characters. It's also tye only filler arc in all of any anime which doesn't get any hate for existing at all, as far as I know at least. So you might want to check it out if you're interested. It's state, however, is not to be confused with things like Rogue Town in the anime, which was extended from the manga, but is officially considered canon by Oda, since he wrote. Aside from Rogue Town there is only one more thing which is canon, but anime only, however that is a lot further in the story so I will not go into further detail to not spoil.

skypiea is definitely one of my favorite arcs because of the world-building there is and also partly because i am Indigenous as well and the story resonated with me. the fights are definitely a secondary aspect for this arc mostly because the fight is something that is less physical and more inhereted generationally. its most a struggle against a system and of legacy. what was really relieving was that its explicitly stated that the skypieans were in the wrong and were actually the bad guys and i know its a "duh" statement but most of the media i grew up with always pushed the narrative of sympathetic villains even in colonial stories and im glad it wasnt done here. from the get go, they are the ones who invade and attack the shandorians. wyper fighting for a land he had never seen had never lived on because of colonial control and fighting because what else can he do was something so personal to me. there were some parts that were a bit too white savior-y for me but in total i loved how the shandorians were represented and kalgara and noland's relationship was a high point for me. skypiea adds so much in terms of world building and hints for the rest of the series and it was great seeing how it impacted arcs afterwards in interesting ways! i also recommend watching the G8 filler arc as that is one of the best filler arcs and it gives so many good character moments and some funny moments as well! i am definitely looking forward to your reaction to the next arc and then water 7. water 7 is a favorite arc for many people and i hope you enjoy it!

31:50 You means how the Shandians knew about Noland's death? No, they knew long time ago. I think the Elder mentioned after the Shandians were displaced to the sky and they lost their land, some adventurers/pirates from the North Blue came to the sky, and they told Calgara about Noland's passing. That's Calgara's greatest regret, not able to see his best friend one last time. And the story was then passed along through out generations.

Enel isn't stupid. Rubber is produced by rubber trees which only grow in the earth's soil. Enel was born and raised in the sky. There is definitely no rubber tree in the sky so he did not know that there's an element like rubber in this world, let alone the way it works as an electricity conductor. You can tell it when Usopp flexes his rubber band to the skypieans and they were stunned. Rubber is even more pricey compare to gold or whatsoever there. I actually wish that you probably could elaborate more about your thoughts on Jaya's dramatic ascending to the sky, the beauty about the bell's story, how it ends the 400 hundred years war and how it connects to Cricket, as well as Luffy's emotional intellegence in dealing with the issues... but yeah... I am glad that at least you have some favorites scenes/moments in this arc. thank you for sharing your thoughts!

I never thought about it, but while I watched your review it came to my mind that this arc would have probably shined more if it happend before alabasta, sure there would be loads of plot holes with how the story originaly went but I think it wouldve been possible to fix that. The fights are pretty even with Enel being much easier to take down than crocodile because luffy is the perfect enemy against enel and could astablish the idea for the strawhats finding natural weaknesses for logia users and when I imagine Skypiea with vivi and karoo.. man I think they wouldve fit so good in this arc and I think one more adventure before Alabasta wouldve made the goodbye much more hurting. You could also establish Robin earlier to the crew building more trust and maybe having her as a kind of undercover agent in alabasta. But there are way to many details that dont fit this and im talking way to much here lol. Great review as ever man, I really appreciate your one piece videos
