I grew up on a low-animal-protein, high-refined -carbohydrate diet. I passed 200lbs at age 16, and have never seen it since. At age 50, this past April, I was diagnosed with diabetes. I began a very strict low-carb, high animal-protein-and-fat diet. I have lost 45 lbs in 5 months with no exercise or reduction in calorie intake. I am a menopausal woman, with feet problems. I can now walk w/o pain, and my heart arrhythmia medication has been cut to half. Cholesterol has improved tremendously.

My Grand mother was a Brazilian woman who died 5 years ago at the age of 100 . She ate MEATS,EGGS,CHEESE, BUTTER,SEA FOODS and FISH in a daily basis, also she drank Cow and Goat Milk very often. Her Husband, my Grand father, died at the age of 94 in 1997 and He also had the same eating Habits . BOTH ate a lot of vegetables and legumes also but they did not eat a lot of fruits or too much PASTA. They ate RICE and BEANS every day like most BRAZILIANS. Also they rarely ate GRAINS , only the daily Rice mixed with Beans, Eggs and Meats.

MassacreBlast Actually, odd as it sounds, the guidelines you're talking about are misleading. Saturated fat is far healthier for the body than polyunsaturated fat, which has been implicated as a cause of free radical damage and accelerated aging. The attack on saturated fat was based on confusing trans fats (which are damaging) with natural saturated fats (which are not). The push to get rid of saturated fat was fueled by companies trying to sell corn oil (a damaging polyunsaturated fat) and soy oil (a horrible toxic product) to the public. They've done a lot of damage.
@rekindleschool-classesandw1129
@rekindleschool-classesandw1129 9 жыл бұрын
MassacreBlast Hi Massacreblast, unfortunately the AHA is "stuck" in recommendations from the past. They'll change their recommendations eventually but have not caught up to the science. There've been many articles recently detailing studies showing that saturated fat is far healthier for people than polyunsaturated, and, in a related vein, that dietary cholesterol does not raise blood cholesterol. It's carbohydrates, not fats, that raise the level of damaging cholesterol. Saturated fat has a protective effect. Unfortunately I can't post the links here, due to KZfaq. But they're easy to track down. You might start with a google search for something like, "saturated fats healthy or unhealthy". Please try reading them with an open mind.

I have been on a low carb diet for the last six months. I have lost 22 pounds, have discontinued the use of Gout medication, experiencing less muscle/ joint pain, better sleep, better memory, no more mind fog, more energy and I have a better outlook on life. I've gone from being inert to active.My numbers were done before and after. Blood pressure went from a borderline high to healthy/normal. My overall cholesterol dropped from 170 to 117. That is just about all the proof I need. additionally, why would Dr. Ansill Keys do studies on herbivores and then try to apply that to omnivores? Then, there is the cherry picking of numbers. Additionally we have the prevalence of obesity among the younger generation and cancer? It is killing everybody!

I did Keto for 10 days and I did experience a brief change (brief because I stopped) My pants started to feel a bit loose but the most important thing I noticed was how much better my brain focused and solved IT problems at work. I had to stop because I was running of out money and time preparing all these foods. I had never eaten so many eggs in a short period of time in my life. Also, the cooking took longer than normal. Coconut tortillas and breads took forever to make. in the mornings, I had to make some quick scrambled eggs with some type of red meat which was ok, but again, the rush and no time to sit down and eat it, etc. If I get my finances in order again and find more time, I'll try this again for sure.

@@fisterhr Just eat fatty meats, organ meats, sardines, salmon, low carb veggies, coconut oil, butter, eggs, cheese. No need for low carb breads and recipes. Keep it simple, meat, veg, fat. Also, once fat adapted, do fasting and eat in a short time window of 4-8 hours. Keto and intermittent fasting are very effective and help to control hunger. Many people also do very well eating fatty meats and fat and no veg at all. We do not need carbs or fiber. Check out Dr. Ken Berry, Dr. Paul Saldino, Dr. Shawn Baker, Primal Edge Health.

For you doubters, I was 176 lbs at 5' 8". I needed to lose weight. I followed what this Dr. speaks of. I ate lots of meat, whether it be red meat, chicken, pork or fish. I ate lots of vegetables. I did my best to use only olive oil in my diet.I use only olive oil margarine and occasionally real butter. I cut out soft drinks, fried foods and cut back on all forms of carbs. I dropped to 139 lbs. I actually had to add some carbs because I was getting too thin. At 142 lbs it was time for my annual physical. My Dr. did not believe me when I told him I wasn't taking, and had not taken, any meds for blood chemistry. He said it was extremely unlikely for a 52 year old man to have blood chemistry as good as mine was/is. Bad cholesterol very low. Triglycerides very low. Good cholesterol very high. 5 years before, at 170 lbs, my blood chemistry was horrible. And in his records.I was more healthy at 52 that had been from my 30's up to 50. Stay away from vegetable oil. Stay away from soft drinks. Cut back on carbs. Eat meat and vegetables. Use olive oil for cooking. Extra virgin olive oil for dressings. I have no ties to any food business. Or any other conflicts of interest. I am a computer programmer that sits for a job. Lastly, I am 55 now and have not put the weight back on. And have no health issues.Wishing you all good health...

KyleGG I stopped believing fairy stories a long time ago. You obviously didn't. Ken Anderson is probably right to a degree - refined carbs and lots of fat and oil are bad for you. But the major reason people became fat from the 1980s on was that Americans started eating more. You don't need fanciful theories about all carbs and all wheat suddenly becoming toxic or obesogenic. If you eat more calories and everything else stays the same (or especially if you do less manual work and move less), you are going to get fat. People were cosuming 3,500 kcalories a day in 1980 - by 2000, it was 4,200 kcalories a day. By 2010, it had fallen somewhat to 4,000 kcalories daily - still too much. That''s why there is a massive obesity, diabetes etc epidemic. That and too much transfat, saturated fat, cholesterol and highly processed junk foods in the diet. People had just as many carbs before WW1, and they were a much bigger proportion of the diet then, but that didn't make them fat so it obviously isn't the carbs as such. www.cnpp.usda.gov/USFoodSupply-1909-2010

***** Theory is fine but what happens in practice? Sure, fat and protein have more energy so we are probably hard wired to want them. But traditional cultures seemed to do just fine on high carb diets. People eating lots of rice or potatoes or wheat/oats did not seem to get fat ... at least not until they started adding rich sauces or cooking oil. There is that guy who did the potato diet and he did fine www.20potatoesaday.com/ And I know that if I eat porridge (ie old fashioned oats) or boiled potatoes I will feel full for a long time. There aren't many calories in either potatoes or oats as long as you boil them in water and eat them with vegetables, salad, fruit etc. Yes you can lose weight on low carb high fat/protein diets also, especially if you are obese and/or diabetic. But it's difficult to keep the weight off long term unless you are a ferocious exerciser. That's true of most diets I suppose. However... "The National Weight Control Registry provides information about the strategies used by successful weight loss maintainers to achieve and maintain long-term weight loss. National Weight Control Registry members have lost an average of 33 kg and maintained the loss for more than 5 y. To maintain their weight loss, members report engaging in high levels of physical activity ( approximately 1 h/d), eating a low-calorie, low-fat diet, eating breakfast regularly, self-monitoring weight, and maintaining a consistent eating pattern across weekdays and weekends." ajcn.nutrition.org/content/82/1/222S.long

+Jester123ish Yes that is a good site. I met the guy who makes all those videos for the site. He works in DC. It was really interesting when he showed reports from the meat industry about how they didn't want to take any of the crap out their food because 2. it tasted good 1. it helped their profits. All the 'science' in this video is based on what happened 10,000 years ago or more, uses remote tribes with high fat diets to justify a high fat diet. They never discuss how long the life span of those people were or the amount of physical activity. They never mention even if 70% of the calories came from fat... how many calories they got. They don't sit down at a restraunt and order a 48oz steak. They had to hunt. This is a good video:nutritionfacts.org/video/good-great-bad-killer-fats/ even though I am vegan, time to time I eat meat, but I eat very little. I also exercise more than the average person. I can't see how a high fat diet would benefit me when I really need simple carbs and some fat for my physical activity. High fat my work half way decently with endurance. Long and slow events, but for bicycling 100 miles+ in a day. I need simple carbs, protein and some fat. Fat is very high in calories and requires more energy to break down into usable energy. Simple sugars like medical grade dextrose or glucose burns fast. I can't spend energy to make energy when I am doing a long and fast event. Fat is great if I want to go slow but I'd like to finish before the sun sets.

+Jester123ish Thank you so much for being part of the discussion. While you are correct (I am well aware of the science and am currently getting a masters in the topic of nutrition), I wonder why saturated fats and trans fats have been grouped together in lock-step as though they are similar at all. I suggest that they are not at all similar- one is quite toxic and the other has been nourishing our bodies and our ancestors for the duration of humankind (note Dr. Millers description of human breast milk containing over 50% saturated fat. this being one of the most important foods to the human being!). Also I wonder whether high levels of cholesterol cause heart disease and, in a larger sense, metabolic syndrome, or whether they are simply correlated. If correlation does not mean causation, then we must keep looking at why our bodies are producing the cholesterol. I do think this is a touchy subject. If you look at the USDA recommendations for fat intake since early 1980s and then look at the health and obesity/diabetes charts, we must pause and wonder at their remarkable positive correlation as well...

+C Abulafia Here's the official figures "Mature human milk contains 3%--5% fat, 0.8%--0.9% protein, 6.9%--7.2% carbohydrate calculated as lactose, and 0.2% mineral constituents expressed as ash. Its energy content is 60--75 kcal/100 ml." www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/392766 Re your comment: "Also I wonder whether high levels of cholesterol cause heart disease and, in a larger sense, metabolic syndrome, or whether they are simply correlated." High cholesterol is a major risk factor for heart disease. By high, essentially anyone eating a standard American diet is likely to have high cholesterol, you may have heard that people with 'normal' cholesterol still get CHD, this is the reason, 'normal' cholesterol means dangerously high cholesterol. nutritionfacts.org/video/the-saturated-fat-studies-buttering-up-the-public/ nutritionfacts.org/video/the-saturated-fat-studies-set-up-to-fail/

A few points to the naysayers: this guy is a cardiothoracic surgeon. When you have severe coronary artery disease, he is the guy that will do your bypass. My guess is he has a good idea what patient type/diet is being referred to him for surgery. Also, check out the video lecture by the Stanford professor who is a vegetarian and was a principal investigator for the A to Z trial. He was a bit surprised when the beloved vegetarian Ornish diet was whipped by the Atkin's/ketogenic diet in almost every way in the study he helped design. As a cardiologist, I have had to totally re-evalute the nutrition advice I am giving to patients. Keep an open mind. The data and strange history behind the US government recommendations should be considered. Good Calories Bad Calories is a good book to start.

I havent had a chance to listen to this lecture yet, but natural fat is necessary, makes you slim, lowers cholesterol and can help restore health. My 12 year old daughter, who did not get sick often, started to get sick. She started to catch anything that was going around and it took her longer to get over it than everyone else. Six months into this unusual stage of compromised health, she got pneumonia. We went for blood work and found out that her cholesterol was too low and her labs showed signs of thyroid antibodies forming. We eat a lot of eggs, butter, olive oil, ghee, lard, coconut oil and recently added tallow. A nutritionist who reviewed the lab work informed me that there was a connection between low cholesterol and compromised lung health... this kid was stopped in her tracks with pneumonia. She also connected all the dots for me as to how this happened since we eat a tremendous amount of fat: My 12 year old was in the midst of puberty and drew on her cholesterol stores to produce sex hormones to grow hips and breasts.... this happens pretty rapidly. The only change we made was adding even more fat into her diet in the form of raw egg yolks. At first we added 2 per day. She is now 14 and has about 6 raw egg yolks per week in addition to the two cooked eggs she eats for breakfast 5 days a week. She has had one minor cold in 2 1/2 years. WE NEED FAT AND CHOLESTEROL TO MAKE SEX HORMONES.

Even the day after he died, he was weighed at 195 pounds. Using a standard BMI calculator, even if you want to use the lowest weight and round his height up, you will still see that Robert Akins falls squarely in the "overweight" range with a BMI of 25.7. Even Veronica Atkins admitted his husband was "14st", which is 196 lbs. If course you cam look at any picture of him and it his round features are obvious but here is a BMI calculator for your convenience: www.bcbst.com/providers/MPMTools/BMICalculator.shtm And here is the confession by his wife who is actually trying to defend her husband but admits he was 14 stones. A stone is equivalent to 14 lbs. www.telegraph.co.uk/lifestyle/wellbeing/diet/4714887/My-husband-was-not-fat.html Akins also had a few heart conditions and was on his high fat diet since college. This lecture was pretty good for the most part, but some of his information was a bit cherry picked, or just simply incorrect. I do think that saturated fats have a great benefit to the body, especially with hormone production, but it's difficult to directly correlate high fat diets with good health. The native tribes for instance that consumed high levels of fat basically have no stress or exposure to processed foods, so it's not a very good example. I think moderation is an underused term in the nutrition world, why must everything be so exact i.e. macro ratios--the body isn't a calculator, it just takes what it needs.
@colleend4715
@colleend4715 10 жыл бұрын
the Native Tribe in My Big Fat Diet were all previously eating processed food, by way of cookies, sugary treats, pasta, potatoes, rice, etc. They live in a town that's pretty westernized with grocery stores and fast food restaurants. They had turned away from the native diet and had a couple generations of obesity in their families. I myself live in Chicago, work in the downtown area and have lots of temptation every day. I don't have cravings anymore and the more educated I become the more the hydrogenated/hfcs laced foods are gross. I can't ever imagine going back and I have no problem passing a bakery or a McDonalds. I believe that it is an addiction to sugar, which is just like an addiction to cigarettes or alcohol. Sugar even releases dopamine like cocaine does. Btw- I have lost 25 lbs, in six months and I feel great. I sleep better, I have more energy and my bp has improved. But the most important thing is I don't have the desire to eat sugar or starch anymore. Its a lifestyle - its for life.

My question is: how good is the knowledge of this cardiac surgeon about the human metabolism? I have seen at the end of the video how insecure he was after he received the questions about the starch and fiber and how flat his answers were. He protested to be called a cardiologist, which, in my opinion, tends to have a higher knowledge of metabolism (at least related to the cardiovascular health) than a cardiac surgeon. Correct me if I am wrong but the specialists should answer specific questions about specific diseases, whether it is the neuro-endocrine or other. One doctor, especially the surgeon, cannot know every aspect of medicine to the finest bits. I agreed with most of the video content but I am not sure how much of it was from his own work and research and how comprehensive was the presented information, whether it was not biased, perhaps by the lobby of meat and dairy industry, in contrast to the grains industry. I see he writes articles of various topics, including AIDS and global warming... I cannot comment much on those though :)

daniel shoop Thanks. I have watched the Oiling of America just a couple of days ago and contradicted some of the claims of that lady, you can read my comments and you are welcomed to add your own :) I agree that saturated fats are not that bad as we thought, but it is not that simple, unfortunately. Resistant starch, which the bacteria ferment in our intestines and which is present in relatively high carbohydrate sources, has been found to promote good intestinal flora and promote the environment with anticancer properties for the colon region. High proteins, on the other hand, promote cancerous environment (confirmed by my lecturer when having the colon metabolism lecture few months ago, he is specializing in this topic). So while you may manage your insulin and the body weight with the low carbs approach, there are other aspects in carbohydrate rich food sources that are beneficial for us and I do not consider it wise to ignore this food group completely.

Michael Warren High carb, low carb... If people do not start moving around more, we can keep arguing and walking in the circle. Varied and balanced diet should provide us with all we need and if leaving out all the highly processed stuff depleted of nutrients, while having enough physical activity, we could be as healthy as our grand grand parents were when having enough food available (i.e. not starving or malnourished). Processed grains and processed meat are equally bad, each damaging our bodies their own ways. The big problem is the industrialization of our food production, bringing high profits to few and miserable health to the masses. We do not eat food anymore, we consume products of the food manufacturing industry. We have been turned into the stock fed by unnatural processed mixtures and standing in a cage all day long instead of freely grazing on the grass fields. They do to us the same as they did to the cows and we are even letting them doing it, at least those advocating low carb approach for the whole population: producing the masses of the sick stock and feeding this sick stuff to sickened people. Such approach is unsustainable.

nickqt Bad analogy. The correct analogy is the doctor who smokes and through his hacking cough tells you smoking is good for you.

***** "It's called science...a scientist or doctor haters information and delivers it." So, a doctor that hates information may deliver it anyway? "He doesn't have to follow his advice." Unapplied science? "Physicians are less likely to smoke and are more likely to eat healthy and exercise frequently than are nurses and the employed adult population. Less than 5% of physicians smoke compared with 15% of nurses and 20% of other workers. www.gallup.com/poll/157859/physicians-set-good-health-example.aspx Add to the fact that such unhealthy doctors may have some technical skills or 'science' background but this does not mean preventive measures or nutrition in general is their specific field of expertise. With a general scientific background, physicians would expected to be less likely to consume meat or smoke. This is exactly what the actual research reveals. Over time, more people, including doctors, are adopting vegan diets. bangordailynews.com/2012/12/21/news/piscataquis/vegan-lifestyle-is-choice-of-mayo-doctor/ But doctors are not perfect either, which is why one is cautioned about taking advice from any doctor, especially one who is obese. "How many doctors smoke ? Less than 25% compared to the rest of the population. And this number continues to drop with older physicians more likely to smoke and not realize the extent of the risks. "in 1972, 2,889 physicians had answered an initial questionnaire and four supplemental questionnaires. Of these, 38.6 percent reported they smoked cigarettes in 1959; 37.7 percent in 1961; 31.8 percent in 1963; 28.3 percent in 1965; and 19.5 percent in 1972. onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.3322/canjclin.36.1.2/pdf Don't lose track of the topic - Are you going to listen to advice of someone who is unhealthy or healthy? Keep in mind that nutrition or diet is not necessarily the "science" background of the physician. "They know it's bad and do it by choice." I'll take advice from the doctor who 'knows its bad" and chooses a healthy alternative, rather than the quack who 'knows its bad' and has no practical solution.

Since I have adopted keto +IF and occasional, periodcal carnivore diets I have become calm, stress free and focused human being. I don't have to think about eating every 2-3 hours. Don't need to calculate all moicros and macros as animal food is nutrient dense. My medical screening is better then ever was. I got rid of problems with my skin and lack of focus. Would I say is the perfect solution for anyone? Probably no, however I am not a vegan (I was for nearly 2 years) and don't claiming that my style od life is better then everyone else.

wait.. hold up , omega 3 isn't bad , it's a necessary anti-inflammatory , this guy is a quack in regards to that comment, omega 6 is what is horrible for you and is in everything.
@Aeux
@Aeux 10 жыл бұрын
You misunderstood. He said: "EXCEPT FOR OMEGA 3 and small amounts of omega 6, POLYUNSATURATED FATS are bad for you." Omega 6 is necessary, but in tiny amounts. That means he is saying Omega 3 is good for you. As long as the proportion between omega 6 and 3 is correct, then omega 6 is healthy as well. (Most of us have way too much omega 6 and way too little omega 6 and saturated fats.)
