The son of Alamo Defender Gregorio Esparza, Enrique Esparza witnessed the brutal battle of the Alamo as an eight-year-old boy. Seven decades later, Adina De Zavala, a driving force behind preservation of the Alamo, found 80-year old Enrique in San Antonio during her research and helped him tell his story.
These quotes are from a November 1902 San Antonio newspaper article and reflect painful memories of a fateful battle.

My name is Gregorio Esparza and I am a direct descendant of Gregorio. As far as I know I am the last "direct" descendant with the name as I have no children of my own to carry on the name Gregorio. But am so proud to be named after a true hero.

It is nice to know that there is still a direct descendant with his name. My family connection is an Uncle (Simon Casares Huizar)-great- great- grandfather. I grew up in San Antonio but now live in Wisconsin. I still have family living in SA and miss the beautiful city and great Mexican food.

I was born about a mile or so from The Alamo, as a child played in San Pedro Springs where Santa Anna is reputed to have camped the night before entering San Antonio.

I went on a trip to Poteet, Tx a couple years ago to meet my relative Gregorio Esparza. He told me stories and showed me pictures and relics of his long great grandfather Gregorio Esparza.

Stories like the Gregorio Esparza, and the battle of Medina should definitely be in the Texas School System History books because Tejanos also fought in those battles. It took many many years to finally recognize Tejanos for the contributions that they played throughout Texas history and finally having a monument placed at the Texas Capital back in 2012 was awesome.

I don't know if is PTSD but I do know that something as traumatic as a battle would be burned into the mind of an 8 year old, especially if his father died a violent death. The mind would record such an event most vividly.

Esparza was a brave man, and a great fighting man the Alamo benefited by having him. Iv read many books about the Alamo, and he (Esparza) is mentioned in all of them.

She convinced Clara Driscoll to help save the Alamo. Clara was an heiress, Adina was a teacher Later, Adina saved the Long Barrack. She knew it was the place of last refuge for many defenders. Clara did not care because it was not a pretty building; she thought it distracted from the Church. Adina locked herself in the Barrack as a demonstration until funds appeared to save it

@@kmaher1424 My Great Grandmother was a huge fan of Texas History Preservationist Adina De Zavala. Adina will always be revered in Texas for her stance in preseving the Long Barracks at Battle of Alamo where The Mexican Soldiers and Defenders fought a Bloody Battle.

If you love the "Defenders" of the Alamo, then your a racist against Hispanics and Blacks. For the "Hero's" fought to enslave blacks and take ALL lands from Native's, Hispanic & Mexican citizens, and they did. Texas truth is what you need to learn.

Tony Rockin Wrong, they fought because Santa Anna was in power and disregarding the 1824 Constitution of Mexico. If Santa Anna weren’t in power, Texas would still be Mexico.

He was 8 years old. The attack took place in the early dawn and no child witnessed the battle for they were hidden in a corner of a room in the Church.

@@whiteknightcat Though it is documented that at least one child, as mentioned in the video, was shot and killed in the church sacristy. Another defender allegedly tried to hide behind Susanna Dickinson. So, the children would've witnessed at least a small part of the violence.

As I understand it, he didn't speak English. This is where history get warped. Use an actor with an "old" voice and have him speak English. Also, he was 8 years old and told the story when he was 80??? But he remembers a conversation between his mother and father???

If this boy of 8 or 10, was in a chapel room during the battle, and when it was dark, how did he see all those actions/events that he says he did, over a 3 acre area? He didn't, the newspaper editor after 70 years, cooked up those phony stories on the Alamo battle, not little Enrique! Yet, professional historians still accept them as if they were the truth!

Esparza's account is so full of historical errors, i can't see why ANY REAL historian would use it for any work. It is hearsay, and would NOT survive in a court of law.

@@hikertrash2956 He was only 10 at the time, and yet he remembers all he did? Esp. since he was in the chapel hiding in darkness? His account is one of the oldest, being 71 years old! And at the time, he was 82 years old! The newspaperman who wrote his alleged account, was Charles Barnes, who just made up stories about the battle. Shame, the boy was there, but he could not have seen all he said he did, but Barnes did!

@@newvibes789 Ginger, calm down, trump is still your president. Yes, I'm an expert and most importantly, I use my common sense based on so-called accounts of the battle. Yes, his father died as a defender...very good. His son, who was taken advantage of by Mr. Charles Barnes at the age of 82, 1907, told outright lies, or his account was embellished by Barnes, which he did on a number of occasions. IF he was located in the chapel as he says, as a ten year old, with his mother, HOW IN THE WORLD did he see all he did, esp. in the darkness? His alleged account is worth NOTHING, would even be taken eriously in any court of law - there are too many historical errors in it.
